It has now been confirmed that Nintendo's next generation console will be called Nintendo Game Cube (Oh, how original! Hard to guess what shape it will be in...), already nicknamed N-Cube. It will sport a PPC-variant CPU from IBM, called Gekko. Graphics hardware is designed by ArtX and S3. Interestingly, former Amiga game developers Factor 5 are involved on the software side writing the sound system. The machine is due out conveniently in the first half of 2001. IGN have opened a Cube webpage with lots of info.

S3 will design the GFX chipsets?
I'll avoid it like a plague.

First off, arn't S3 and NVIDIA the same company now a days?
Also u know this was developed by IBM this time around and not Nintendo.
All it needs is a Keyboard, Mouse, and Harddrive, and we are set. The Dreamcast already has a Keyboard and Mouse, they just lack a Harddrive, then even they could be ready for Amiga, FreeBSD, and Linux, which from what I have heard, have all ran on it. Which is badly needed, the MPEG player I am using on my DC now is written for windows, and so are all the upcoming emulators, I don't want to see that on my DC!!!! :O/
Anyhow, let's hope Amiga and Harddrives make it to the new IBM err um Nintendo.

In reply to Comment 2 (Aram Iskenderian):
S3 will only provide the texture compression technology. The gfx chip is designed by ArtX who were also responsible for N64's graphics hardware. ArtX is owned by ATI, BTW.

As far as I know, S3 is owned by VIA, nVidia just uses S3s Texture Compression technology in their drivers.

Well one thing is for sure, this will be the first time Nintendo has been faster than the other game systems, they have always pushed there GFX and left the speed much to be desired. :O/
