Snoqualmie, WA, August 21, 2000 - Amiga (www.amiga.com) has announced today an agreement with Red Hat, Inc. (NASDAQ: RHAT), the leader in open source internet infrastructure, to provide high performance multimedia for the Linux platform. The agreement gives the Redhat.com community access to Amiga's Software Developer Kit. Bill McEwen, Amiga President/CEO, said that the company selected Red Hat because of its leadership and abilities to assist in the development of the new Amiga.

“The Amiga community has already created significant content including games and exciting Java applications with the Amiga SDK. With the response that we received from the members of the Red Hat team, they clearly understand what the Amiga has meant to the development of personal computer as we know it today. And more important, they are eager to provide support and add significantly to the solid foundation we have been developing. McEwen Said”

"We're excited to be working with Amiga," said Paul McNamara, VP of Products and Platforms. "With a multimedia consumer layer available with Red Hat as the foundation, new markets and new users will be able to take advantage of Linux and the software available on Redhat.com."

“The strategic relationship and partnership with the Tao Group in Reading, England (www.tao-group.com) that we announced at the beginning of this year, added to this support from Red Hat, gives the New Amiga a very exciting and real story.” McEwen Said.

The new Amiga SDK is the embodiment of the Amiga multimedia computing experience. With tools, support, and exciting new applications already in development for the new Amiga, developers can quickly begin creating games, multimedia applications, and can use Java for even more opportunities. With the purchase of the SDK a developer will receive free updates for the next 12 months, and the scout level of Amiga's support program.

This is a good sign since Amiga can supply the face that Red Hat Linux is missing. Golm and KDE window tools are nice but a bit wanting ( I have used them extensively and thought the do the job they lack the stlye and lustor of a intergrated and standard GUI. Lets hope the new ANMIVERSE and Amiga foundation layer carry over the well thought out classic Amiga GUI with advance and robust functiionality.

Wow, Amiga.com's second attempt at marketing their SDK. For $99, I'm sure the Linux community will be just begging to buy that SDK. I mean which would the Linux devs rather work on; Gnome apps, freebie QNX RTP, or the $99 Amiga SDK?

Maybe I'm just missing something, but doesn't it seem like any Linux guys who will produce anything to work with the AmigaOE will be working at cross-purposes for their OS of choice? I mean, sure, whatever they develop for AmigaOE will run just fine on their Linux boxes. But that'll only be because AmigaOE (and apps written for it) is destined to run just fine on ANY box, be it Linux, Unix, Windoze, Mac, WinCE, Palm, whathaveyou. Sure the Amiga side gets plenty of development, but Linux gets exactly NOTHING out of this, for in the fullness of time, the underlying OS (if any) will be COMPLETELY irrelevant. Perhaps I shouldn't be letting the proverbial cat out of the equally proverbial bag with this, but it seems a shockingly obvious point and I can't see how Red Hat or any other Linux company would invite another company to steal developers away from them. Am I just not getting a vital point in all this or are these guys just too stupid to be in business?

Note that Ami will very probably run much better on Linux, as opposed to like on Windows (which is the *almost* only other option)...

Well that is what I thought, but it seems by the pictures that I have seen
that the Amiga SDK requrires X to be running in order to run the GUI.
I hope I am not right about this, but that is the way it looks. :/

I am a bit confused. Is Linux going to be perpectually working
under the SDK layer? (amiverse?)
Does this announcement mean that Red Hat is pushing its GUI
face at the public as being an Amiga face?
I was looking forward to seeing a super fast ELATE VP native
thingy without having any software OS baggage. Maybe if enough
apps get ported using Linux or Windows or MacOS as a base,
developers will get smart enough and start writing for ELATE
VP native..I don't know.....
But what's the comments about there being lots of new Amiga
that works with the SDK out there. ....I haven't heard
or seen any product yet....
With the AmigaONE scheduled for late 2000 or Q1 2001, if that
doesn't show up......I don't know what we're gonna get....
who really wants a layer on top of a layer on top of a layer (unless
it is so transparent, and there are no crashes, and it is as fast
as the mind can comprehend)....

1. It will just increase number of Linux users.
2. Linux can 'run' Ami better than Windows.
Now add the two together.

Ami doesn't use the GUI of X (or any underlying OS) at all. It just 'borrows' a window, to use as a playfield for Ami's GUI, apps and games.
The native version of Ami doesn't contain any code from X.
Hope I could shed some light about this ...

Claus

Funny, can't find any corresponding release on the RedHat
site.
Aren't we still waiting for a Sun press release too?
Meanwhile Sun (and RedHat) seem to be pushing GNOME
instead

Well, I think I can put some things mentioned here into perspective. (The perspective of my perceptions and hopes, mind you... ;-) )
- what Linux developers get from using the Amiga SDK:
By supporting the SDK, Ami might turn out to be attractive enough for larger, commercial companies; if these companies develop major applications for the Ami, this will in turn benefit Linux users who can run these apps in the hosted Ami environment. (True for all other platforms, too.)
- will Linux be host for Ami forever?
No. Linux can run Ami. Windows can run Ami. Ami can run native on supported hardware. Other OS can run Ami. (Sometimes in the future, not yet.)
- why don´t RedHat and/or Sun and/or Matrox announce their partnerships with Amiga, too?
One of Matrox´ officials answered this in an interview: They will announce if and when they can offer product. Amiga has a product, the SDK, and they announce partnerships because they hope the SDK will sell - crucial for their goal. Matrox, RedHat, Sun et al cannot yet benefit from the Amiga partnership, so they don´t announce so they won´t look stupid if Amiga fails.
Ah, business...

I just got off the phone with Red Hat PR's lovely Melissa London.
All this announcement says is that Red Hat's web store will sell the Amiga SDK.
This is NOT an alliance, collaboration, or joint development agreement.
This is a marketing piece, plain and simple.

Ofcourse it is. It's just amiga inc, calling partnerships here and
there, where a simple oem agreement would be more fitting. I don't
really understand these guys... I can't simply follow their logic...
Everything they say it's not what is really happening... Everything
they tell today, they can refute and deny tomorrow... How can they
expect people "keeping the faith"...

Funny, now people are complaining because Amiga engages in "marketing".
Before people were always complaining Amiga never did any marketing and that was considered one of the reasons Commodore went under.
"It's not an alliance, it's just marketing". Damn right and who cares?
Red Hat creates visibility for Amiga inside and outside the Linux community.
They are selling the product which clearly means they think it has value, otherwise they would not attach their name to it.
What we are seeing here is a bunch of nay-sayers who will whine regardless of what Amiga does.
The current Amiga team is doing more for Amiga in terms of generating visibility than Gateway or any other previous Amiga owner since Commodore.
But by all means, complain and whine. That's all some people can do these days.

No, people are not complaining because AInc are "marketing".
People are (quite rightly) pointing out that whereas AInc are claiming "poertnerships" and "strategic alliances", what they are REALLY entering in to is FAR less than they would have us believe, sadly :(
Let's face it - AInc are (deliberately?) misleading us over these issues - how can we possibly be expected to believe anything ELSE they may claim?
Sorry AInc, you goota be more honest or you'll risk losing all credibility :(

What the HELL you get it from??? They NEVER said this. Their wording was "working together", just what RedHat said also.
(Ah, jeah, Teemu used the word "alliance" wrongly in the news item, but it don't means you *have* to mix everything up.)

What Amiga does is just usual in business world. It's just the usual press-release wording. **BUT**, don't mix "alliance" with "partnership" or "relationship". They are *different* formulas. And the word "strategic" (just) means that they have plans with each other in future. I don't think they want to mislead us, and that they think we are not aware of the situation. Unless someone really stupid.

Um, is not the fact that Amiga runs ontop of Linux saying that there has been an alliance in terms of software, and therefore in business? Shoot me if I am wrong but to me, Amiga is offering something wonderful, I LOVE Linux, but mostly I just run Be or Winblows (and toy around with QNX) for all my internet, video digitizing, game playing, downloads, experiments ect. And Linux as my server which sits in the corner collection dust, only to be played with now and then to test out some new Freeware, or play Quake 3 :)
Anyhow my point is, that with Amiga running "seamlessly" ontop of my 98% crash proof Hacker OS from hell, I become happy again!
If I could digitze full length movies, convert them to Dreamcast format, Play an assortment of High Quality emulators, use my scanner, printer, ect. ect. Use my entire computer for both creativity, research, and serving, then hell ya, bring it on!!!
Now my question again, can I run the Amiga OS without the presence of X!?!?!? That would be sweet!!!

Amiga wants the new OE to be capable of running _native_ on a specific hardware.
So why would you want to host it on Linux, when you can run it native on that hardware?
And if you need Linux for your tasks and want to run Ami only hosted, you need X for
Linux - or can Linux be run without X (i simply don't know, therefore my question)?

"1. It will just increase number of Linux users." How do you make that leap of logic? You don't need Linux to run the AmigaOE. You don't need ANY other OS to run the AmigaOE. It runs just fine on its own and faster that way besides. And since the goal is for the AmigaOE to run hosted on ANY OS, why would that lead anyone to Linux? The only reason the SDK is out on Linux first is because that's the OS on which development started. Later SDK releases will include Windoze (since virtually everyone uses it), which will completely obviate the necessity of running Linux for developing for the AmigaOE, much less needing it to run the consumer release.
