I've been forced by recent events to add a few lines of code to the comments script that will serve to track and display the IP address of where any comment that is added originates from. This is pretty much superficial, as it doesn't solve the problem of fake names or a few people pretending to be somebody else, but at least it should make it easier to track the most obvious attempts at such forgery. I don't think tracking IP's is a good thing, but it seems to have become a necessary evil to at least try to keep ANN's comments from degrading any further. Thanks for your understanding.

How about saving the hostname too ?
It would make it easier to recognize ppl. I for an example use Telia, so all of my messages should come from .telia.com, unless i am posting from a friend of mine or something.

In my opinion, it's useless. The ones want make fake messages will find ways to elude it, and the ones want to be anonim are do that usually with a reason, and this way they may be avoid commenting.

Though ip number will match the isp the message is sent from, not necessarily a domain name used which often with a specialist server company.
This message will therefore look like a fake. Possibly we are all phonies underneath :)

Great for tracking people with a static IP, but what about those with dynamic
ones? Still, I don't mind my IP being recorded (it's static anyway, so all someone
has to do is a resolve on worldfoundry.demon.co.uk to find it out)..
That's why I use MiamiDx ;)

For users accessing this site via a `doze based PC, there is a free (free for personal use) firewall available and is very highly recommended.
First, to check your current defenses (this should work for Amiga owners too btw) - go to:
www.grc.com
- follow the "shields up" link, and carry out the tests... I used to use Wingate for a home-based network, and that is supposed to secure your system - it doesn`t...
Then head straight for:
www.zonelabs.com
- and download ZoneAlarm - it`s a very easy to configure firewall, asks before any programs are let "out" onto the net (it uses a simple system of ticks to determine whether you let it out all the time, or force it to ask for permission). To give you an idea of how useful it is, I had a trojan that no virus checker has ever found - and ZoneAlarm stopped it dead in it`s tracks before it could spread any information from my system.
If you need a simple, easy to set up proxy program for the PC, try the one at:
www.analogx.com
- it`s very easy to set up and doesn`t interfere with the firewall program above :-)

It's a sound idea, but why not display the domain name address instead, if applicable? That way, we users may taunt each other for our lame ISPs. ;-)

Most people seem not to bother hacking into Miami(Dx). Is it because Amiga and Miami(Dx)
are that secure or are people not interested due to low market share of the Amiga computer
series? Are there known vulnerabilities in Miami that are perhaps not commonly known?

Not going to work. These spoofers are excellent of faking ip address that
it is hard to find out where are they coming from. Looking up hostnames makes
it worse since the spoofer picks up a hostname he fakes using that ip and
sticks with it until the damage is done and then finds another ip quickly. We
can only learn what is real and what is not unless someone out there knows how
to track down a spoofer and reveal its true ip address.
