The latest issue of Amiga Active magazine reports of the Predator busboard which will connect to the expansion port of the CyberstormPPC or the BlizzardPPC card. It will feature 3 PCI slots, 1 AGP slot and 1 SDRAM socket for up to 256MB of RAM. The bus runs at 66MHz. Drivers for an AGP-based Voodoo5 graphics card are in the works. The busboard is targeted at a September release and should cost around £170. [Is this the board from DCE that was discussed here earlier? - TY]

you mean a AGP 1 slot (66Mhz 32bit) and three PCI slots (33Mhz 32bit) and a 66Mhz sdram expansion slot on 1 25Mhz crappy PCI bridge which lacks some PCI2.1 signals??
This is VERY unrealistic.
Maybe for this redesigned version of the Blizzard/CyberstormPPC.
Remember, the PCI bridge is capable of commmunicating with the B/Cybervision @ only 18MB/sec

It will feature 3 PCI slots, 1 AGP slot and 1 SDRAM socket for up to 256MB of RAM.
That's nice 1 SDRAM socket, you could get a cheap G3-MAC PCI accelator for it.
68060+604e+G3, hardwarewise it could be possible.
But until completion it is completely vaporware.

Are you sure about this? It's roughly the speed of the Mediator, and IIRC the bus on P5/DCE PPC cards said to be much faster. (Can't find info on this now.)

RE: Voodoo5 drivers
The message boards on http://www.techextreme.com/3dXtreme/ suggest that you can use the Windows unified Voodoo5 drivers on a Voodoo3 graphics card, so it may be possible to use a couple of cards in the Voodoo range as long as they write the drivers to the pre-defined standards and don`t use shortcuts.
I think I used the Voodoo5 drivers at one point on my Voodoo3 2000 PCI without problems, but found a newer WHQL ("official") V3 2K driver set better for my needs.

But will there be Warp3D drivers for the VooDoo 5 on the Predator?
Haven't heard anyone speaking about that. No Warp3D and the thing

What we have read has come from Amigative Magazine issue 12. They didnt confirm who is making it but to keep a watch out over at Eyetech's site for more news. Sounds like it couod be DCE or maybe a joint effort with them and Eyetech ..who knows.
As an added note, The Predator will be fully PCI 2.1 complaint, including Bus mastering and DMA facilities, meaning the on-board RAM can be accessed directly by the PPC or attached GFX card.<p>
More info can be found here or over at Amigaextreme website on what we know from AA.

1) predator's name is very close to mediator's (so i belive is just a joke)
2) on the other hand september is very close and I don't (want) to belive that a joke like this has an expiration end so soon.
3) about the bus problem: if (and must) has a dma so with memory on it the predator could perform beter than anything (ofcourse do not belive bus speeds more than 30Megs per sec
4) But what about with the memory Installed already on PPCs cards ?
5) AGP(1) is SLOWER than pci at 33mhz but VERY little the transformation from pci gfx to agp WAS just a trick from hardware companys but AGP2 and Up is faster than pci.
6) ANYWAY our problem is not AGP or PCI cause these 2 ports are capable of reaching speeds Up to 100megs per sec. Our prob is the Bus from PPC cards thats seems to be stuck with 040 speed..
The SOLUTION : AN OPERATING SYSTEM NATIVE on PPC with gfx support ALSO native on ppc. ofcourse its not the best but we could gain more from ppc speed than 040/060s.(the bus will still run at 25).
If predator succeed to be a reality and not a joke I WILL buy it for sure. (mediator is TOO expensive for what it offers)
sorry for my english
Lets hope for the best!

No it's nmot unrealisytic. The PCI bridge is not on the B/C ppc but on the card.
The B/CVisionPPC has a REALLY crap PCI bridge syncronised with the 040.
Having the memory on board the pci bridge could do DMA and the bus between the
BlizzPPC and the memory will have NO speed limitations. This will allow very fast
(almost) speed from CPU>SDRAM>AGP&PCI

We will be doing drivers if we get a board from whoever is doing this. I don't
think that converting the Mediator-based drivers to some different PCI board
will be difficult. However, I doubt that the Voodoo 5 would be a good idea, the
card is too expensive and probably a nightmare to program with 4 chips.
If this thing really has an AGP slot, using a Matrox G450 or whatever Matrox has
out then would make much more sense, since it would offer an upgrade possibility
for the new Amiga OS.

I assume that you're from the warp3D team.
Sorry but if this Predator has to ship in about 3 or 4 weeks, then they must at least have contacted you or other members of the team to do some warp3D drivers. Shipping the card without them is useless because that's why ppl want to buy a busboard in the first place.
AS DCE is probably the only HW manufacturer who has the documentation
, they must be the anonymous manufacturer. Why haven't they officially announce it to be at least compatitieve with the mediator??? I allready preordered the mediator, and the shipment date is very close. I reached the pont of no return. So that's one costumer less for the Predator.
What about the developement time?? Did they start at the same time as Elbox, but kept it quiet until some anonymous interview with Amiga Active?? Is this why they sended some faulty info on the mediator??? (the non-exsistant 8MB limit).
Strange.....Amiga got no PCI bridges for years (not possible bla bla) and suddenly there are 2 (even AGP)?
Questions...Questions..........
Too much questions if you ask me............

The real problem with the mediator is there is no AGP, infact its extremely difficult to buy PCI GFX Cards these days as they are all AGP, ask your local store how easy it is. So realy if you have a PPC card then the PRedator is the choice, then again, what do we do with all our Zorro2/3 cards? Woe to all the Toaster owners. Now as for speed of the CPU been PII equiv. True, but it has been proven that a Celeron300A is faster with 128mb of memory and a TNT2 compaired to a Celeron500 with 64mb and a TNT2. SO realy for decent gaming speeds (if we get any big games) memory is the main key factor. SDRAM sounds like a good idea.

Can I make a suggestion, why is everyone getting excited?, this is JUST vaporware, nothing has been made yet.
Wait for the product to ship first.... you have seen what has happened with Boxer?, people have pre-paid and nothing for 2 years. You have seen what has happened with mediator out in July and its nearly September. Insert MKII meant to ship Jan from Arctech/National Amiga and nothing.
Suggestion 1, dont pay for anything, you dont know the financial history of these companies?, they could go broke tomorrow just like phase5.
Suggestion 2, Open your mind a little.
Suggestion 3, visit Amiga Watchdog site and see past history of how they have dealt with customers in the passed. (ie. Do research).

Wanna start with the 'my setup can play HreticII with 2 fps faster then your setup' ???
Voodoo3 is fast enough to do 800x600x16 @ 60 fps or 1024x768x16 @ 30.......
SDRAM is a nice option because a 64 MB EDO SIMM is hard te get these days, not to mention the price......
But you'll be stuck with 66Mhz DIMMS (or PC100 simms clocked down to 66Mhz....)so what's the HUGE speed increase??
Make the DIMM only available for the PPC would be a great idea. Don't share the memory anymore with the 68k.....This will mean a real speedup.
Some other reasons why AGP is not a must.
1)There will be more PCI gfx cards again because of intels 810 chipset (doesn't support AGP).
2)Most exciting AGP cards are nVIDIA based cards (TNT2, Geforce). Information about these chips are very hard if not impossible to get. This means no drivers.
3)This AGP port (1X 2X??) is not so dramatically faster then a PCI slot.
4)The complete voodoo range (including voodoo4/5) are available as PCI models.

Such a board is probably only interesting for Cyberstorm owners.
Blizzard owners will buy their Amijoe as soon as it's finished. It's got a so-DIMM socket and a possibility to add a PCI busboard. Until that board is made, the mediator will be sufficient

All nVidia chips are available as PCI: the TNT2, the Geforce 1 and 2.
Also the Radeon 256 from ATI, which beats the Geforce 2, will be available as PCI.

This is all too painfull. The Amiga continues being the target of small
companies and garage-manufacturers. This never has been different and was,IMO,
one reason for Amiga to go down. All is too unprofessional.
What do we have ? A totally outdated machine which gets replaced
(while running) without really considering a way to the future. (And yes, there
seems to be a future, for those who still invest money in their Miggy (I don't).
We have a dead slow MC680x0 system, that gets HACKED subsystems, being a lot more powerful,
than the hosting system, the OS is still not PPC native, if it will be, none of
the old Amiga programs will run, and if only the major apps get ported to PPC I have to
buy them again, and I ask myself: Why don't I invest this money into another system
(Linux/Windows) that IS supported by major companies. Witth computing power doubling
every 18 months, as an Amiga user for me this is valid: Computing power doubles every
5 years) Naaahhhh......But, hey, I write these lines on an Amiga. I only have an Amiga.
And I want to keep it and use it till it burns ! Yeah. Cause I like the Amiga. But I am also relistic:
Amiga is a dead end, hack-hack-hack.....Yesterday I considered ordering a CyberStomPPC.
What ? Have you seen the prices ? (I'd like to order a CVisionPPC along as well with that)
For this price I get half of my Intel-Dream-Machine (incl. 19" Monitor). No way.
I will upgrade my Amiga only if the PPC boards drop to the 2/3-1/2 of their actual prices, same for the gfx-card.
But even more I would like the only logical way:
Amiga On A Card. This would be the only hardware I'd pay the over-price. Imagine:
You run a modern system, capable playing all those games (Win), have a lot of Linux fun,
and: In each operating environment you open up a desktop/window with a REAL Amiga
in it, no UAE, no, I mean, REAL Hardware-Amiga (drool). Multitasking ? Multicomputing !
And all it would need would just be ONE piece of hardware: Tha PCI Amiga. According to what Mick Tinker says on his
homepage, the prototype was ready and running ? So why another new system ?
Damit, I think this Amiga On A Card would be a hot-seller ! And if a second CPU, a PPC xould be added...wow !

This card is 68K only, and I don't think they has the time/resources to redesign it to dual CPU (68K+PPC), or PPC only. Besides, it used the old chips.

This is still the lamest complaint I see in such discussions of new hardware.
I firmly believe that "if you build it, they will come." Someone, somewhere
will write drivers, don't you worry. Once the hardware is available to someone,
even if only a few selected developers (Hyperion would be a good choice here
for Warp3d drivers, and/or the P96 guys and/or the CGX guys) then drivers
will come to be. If you don't build the hardware, of course no one will write
drivers for soemthing that doesn't exist... But I believe that a couple drivers
will be available for Mediator on release, with more following. Same for this
Predator thing. Same for **ANY** similar PCI bus addon that may ever be announced
in the future...
Perhaps your particular favorite card in the universe may not be supported on
day one, but some card will be. Your favorite card may be supported shortly or
distantly after the busboard ships. If you don't want to wait, you can be the
guy that writes the driver... Be patient, good things are coming our way.

All I want is a Cyberstorm PPC card for my A4000. I have a
Cyberstorm III 060/50 and it has 128Mb RAM on it, but I don't
want to waste all that RAM if I can't transfer it to a PPC card.
Oh and seeing as I have an 060 I don't want to be buying another
one. Can I buy Cyberstorm PPCs without an 680x0 cpu on them?
If so where from? I want to transfer the 060 from mine to the other
card should I get one..
Any help appreciated..
As for PCI/AGP graphics cards, erm, these new boards should
essentially just be plug-n-play. You should be able to get any gfx
card and whack it in like a PC. However, we need driver support, no
driver support and the thing is dead - look at P96! when was that last
updated? If Amiga endorses any of these new card systems though maybe
it would be wise just to go for Matrox cards only, as they seem to be
best of pals at the moment.
One question, how fast would Quake run in 800x600x8(or x16/x24) using
Warp3D on Voodoo 3 card but on Cyberstorm III 060/50?
Cheers..

Yes, there are some PCI card manufactored with TNT, TNT2, GF, but it's not easy to find any of them in the stores. If you ask your local reseller to get one of those PCI cards for you, then they will be alot more expensive than a twice better AGP card.
I think this Predator and even Mediator is a step in the right direction, but we really need a new motherboard to get all the advantiges and that should really have happen years ago. I know that someone will yell that BoXeR is the answer, but it ain't, I don't think that will see the light.

I think one thing about these new PCI and (maybe AGP) based busboards is not even being realised in this discussion. Everyone is worried about drivers and support for the current Amiga OS, but when the new Amiga OE is available, won't it run on the current Amiga's with PPC? Therefore it will have drivers for the PCI (and AGP) to take advantage of that hardware. I'm quite sure it will probably be by passing the original Amiga hardware (will not be running on 680x0) If it is out by years end or Q1 2001, then you will soon have a really nice way to use this new hardware, and not stuck with something that ties you to the original Amiga hardware. Just a thought.

they actually have any is another question. You can buy it without
the 060 and save $200. You could ask about a trade-in, too, and
possibly save more money that way, unless you want to keep your old
accelerator for some reason.
As far as P96, how much more updating does it really need? There's
still support for it, since I mentioned what I thought was a bug on
the newsgroups, and was sent e-mail by one of the P96 guys who got
things straightened out in short order (it only required me changing
one option).
