Amiga have just released this press release about the AmigaOne hardware spec. Eyetech will build the first actual boxes, which are Classic Amiga/AmigaOne hybrids (both A1200 and A4000-based models will be available) and will be based on PPC. They are scheduled for a Q1 2001 release. First stand-alone AmigaOnes should ship in Q3 2001. Also, the development of the Classic AmigaOS will continue with v3.9 coming out before Christmas.

Hmmm, interesting. I am happy to see that I won't necessarily be forced to buy a whole new
computer. Not because of the price, as surely the Predator and G3/G4 upgrades, plus the
required Phase5/DCE CSPPC card will have a respectable total price tag, but I'm running
out of room in my house for all my computers. I truely hope that Eyetech will make an
A4000T Predator model for my machine, or I have to buy an A4000 or 1200 with predator
setup and have the "where do I put it in my house" problem again. The hint of AmigaOS 3.9
is interesting, though I'd love to see what is planned for it compared to 3.5. I think
this will be interesting, and look forward to spending some money on this stuff.

Sounds very reasonable. Be able to transition, to the new platform
and not leave your older great classic amiga software....
I just hope it happens......But it looks like they will emulate
the classic on the newer hardware....that may be ok,,, I am not
really sure, but our hardware is starting to get older and running
it as a e-"ghost" on a new machine ain't tooo, tooo bad a option
versus having no hardware

Well, I've spent a lot of money on my Amiga so far but not yet a PPC.
I'm not sure if I'd want to bolt a G3/G4 and PPC graphics card onto my
existing machine if I will have to spend more than £500 on it when I
could just get a PC/IMac and run the AmigaDE on that. Also it
concerns me that the A1200 motherboard might hold back the performance
of the machine.

You don't have to worry. The classic Amiga platform will only
be used when there is no other alternative. Classic apps using
retargetable code will be able to make use of the hardware in
the AmigaOne itself.
These transitional AmigaOnes are *FULL* AmigaOnes - there will be
no performance loss at all when the Amiga DE is running.

Personally, I'm happy that Amiga, Inc. has offered the upgrade path that so many users have demanded, but perhaps a bit let down that standalone hardware will be delayed until a later date.
I'm also hoping that the listed "spec" has some actual meat behind it; I see a basic list of processor and memory/storage requirements, but I assume there should be more to it than that... I expected the "spec" we've heard so much about to be either for an individual machine (full hardware reference design), or a list of what surrounding architectures (chipsets and whatnot) would be supported for each supported processor... Still, I'm sure we'll be hearing more about all this in the next month or so.
Congrats to the guys in Snoqualmie for reaching another milestone, in any case!

Will there be any solutions for us, or are we kinda stuck? If there are no solutions for us...will we be able to get a4000 motherboards should our old and aging boards die on us?

Well, you have got to hand it to them, Amiga have come up with a unique solution! Imagine if Commodore had released the Amiga as a "Bolt-on" to the C=64?
I must admit that the licensing of hardware to meet a software spec was probably the best way to go. The way to make Amiga is sucess in the future is to generate innovative and exciting products, and these in turn are generated by healthy competition. I don't want to see Amiga become the 'Mazda' of the IT world, where niche marketing rules, so I guess it is all up to us now.
Also, it cuts R & D costs because the hardware development is out-sourced. I will withold opinion until I see one, but I am impressed by the specs. I hope that the cost factor will not be astronomical. Expectations however will be high. I don't want to say "Great product, but....", its got to be good first time out..

Fleecy, can you tell us if the AmigaDE will also run on the Mediator+SharkPPC, or even the DCE G-REX...In other words, it sounds like the AmigaDE is really hardware agnostic, so logically it should run on any of these combinations, and I suspected that this was the real reason for the sudden surge of PCI expansions and G3/G4 announcements. But as we all know, what you assume is not always what will work. Can you comment on if this is how it will work? For example: Amiga user "A" buys the Mediator+SharkPPC, Amiga user "B" buys the DCE G-Rex+CSPPC (or G3/G4), will they both be able to run the new AmigaDE?

May I be the first to bitch about this ?
I thought they where to come out with a machine capable
of running 'classic' apps without emulation ?
Now what we get (as I understood) is a board wich connects
to an Amiga to run 'classic' apps, while the board itself
is an AmigaOne on a card....
We have to get that board aswel as all the other stuff needed.
The other option would be to wait till the end of next year,
and buy an AmigaOne standalone with 'classic' emulation. Right ?
What about an AmigaOne with a 'classic' Amiga on a board ? AND NO EMULATION...
I wonder what the costs will be of those mentioned above.
I dont realy know what to think of all this, maybe we can also buy an
AmigaOne standalone box and atach a 'classic' amiga to it, or just
keep two machines...
What about the statement that 'there will be thousends of apps
available at introduction of the AmigaOne' ?
The way I see this those thousends of apps will only be available
to already Amiga owning people. (thats is: without emulation)
I'm confused......
Feel free to correct me, and I will crawl back underneath my rock again....

Okay, I'm not sure get this. I have an A1200 in a custom made tower case (which I kinda looked forward to chucking once I got a new Amiga, it's huge and heavy and I hate lugging it to the Amiga club meetings) now the new Amiga is simply a PowerPC+PCI slot add on card for my A1200?!? I want a whole new computer! This one has served it's time, but it's falling apart, I've rebuilt it from after a lightning hit and DON'T it to be part of my "NEW" Amiga. Will this be the only way to move my existing hard drive to a NG Amiga or can I simply wait for a whole new Amiga and get the drive over there (maybe via networking?). Is a hybrid machine the only way to get a NG Amiga to read AmigaDD floppy disks? (outside ADF images...)

I'm glad we get a change to transition smoothly to the new AmigaOE, but I hate
to use my Amiga as a big dongle for my AmigaOne board !
I would rather have NEW hardware with classic emulation or hardware classic
compatibility trough say the inside-out card ! (I know it doesnt exist,
but its just an example)
My 4000 is hacked together with god knows what (ok, I know..) and I dont think
it will live very long anymore, so where do I get replacement parts if it dies,
and at what cost ?
What about PPC apps ? will they work with the DE under 4.0, or do I have to
throw them away, when I finally buy a real AmigaOne and leave my 4000 with
or without the AmigaOne board to rest ?
Maybe we should settle with a PC running AmigaDE OE or whatever... And use UAE
till something better apears (AmigaDE with 4.0 support ?)
I dont know, maybe some more clarification from you guys at Amiga Inc ! Please....

When the say that the A1200DE/A4000DE are designed for the towered A1200/A4000 do they mean "any" tower or are we going to have so many "dongles" that we'll need that gigantic EZ-Tower monstrosity from Eyetech to house it all rather than cramming it into existing an Power Tower (or similar)?
Anyway, it's all exciting news and I can't wait to actually see this stuff. Thanks Amiga Inc.

May i comment on this Amiga ONE.
As a PC technician and having to put up with Windows(and all its versions)is the
instablity that it holds - most of its both the hardware(intels design structure)and windows(sheer lazy programming). This is why have a Amiga - its old yes, but it works!.It will be good to have and amiga envrionment on my pc,
but i dont want it to run like a PC (just another Windows).
And i'm sorry to nag bill and fleecy but why didn't you licence the amiga motherboards to a taiwan company. It cost me to much money to buy a A1200 m/board or A4000 board(i think im speaking for everyone)and PPC boards are so rare on the ground(G-Rex). i just feel we are going to steps forward, and then the time we reach the two steps the PC market has moved four steps. The public need to captivated all the time which means consent releases all the time.
Any way i love the amiga and i always use till i die!.

As I understood it, the Classic OS 4.0 will be the "emulation package" for the AmigaDE, which does not use (or need?) any Classic Amiga hardware. But until that is ready, OS 3.9 (due before Christmas according to the press release) will run classic software on the Eyetech expansion boards using the classic hardware (but as I understood it, system compliant software will benefit from the AmigaOne hardware already with OS 3.9)...?

This all sound good, but what about my beloved A3000T's?
There are many A3000T's in use, and I know probably three
dozen users in my area alone that have one or more A3000T's.
It seems like the A3000T, which most people will agree was probably
the best Amiga ever made. It is a highly sought model and there
are thousands and thousands of them in use.
It seems though that the "Best Amiga Ever Made", which again most
people would agree gets left out in the cold yet once again. It's
another round of being left out of the party! Unless the 4000 version
might work in it, which is probably doubtful. There are many A3000T's

Well here again we are offered a solution that will only benefit
a certan segment of the current Amiga user base...that being A1200
and A4000 owners.
What about A3000, A3000T's users and A4000T users. I think this is
a tragic mistake and I have been one of the Amiga faithful for years.
I'd rather quit using computers rather than using anything but Amigas.
Now were told it will be the end of NEXT year before a new Amiga computer
comes onto the market. This again IMHO is a tragic mistake, as this solution
is going to benefit a portion of the Amiga user base and will not get
any new Amiga users. This doesn't even make sense, as I thought the
whole idea was to not only keep the existing user base and to gain
new users.
We also have the IBM POP motherboard which is completely designed and
all anyone has to do is to build the d*amn thing. It seems to me it
would be as easy to build a POP motherboard for the new Amiga as
to keep doing these BORG addons...thus having the new Amiga out in
a few months. IBM spent millions on R&D, thus Amiga, Inc. nor any
of their hardware partners would have a cent in R&D. All they
have to do is build it. A year from now is not good IMHO, and I'm
afraid this is a very bad mistake. I am one of the Amiga faithful
owning multiple A3000T's, which it seems no one is going to even
make anything for this except Elbox, but my faith is wavering.
I cannot even believe that I have come to this point. :/

Maybe I'm missing something, but if the new AmigaOE is being developed
on x86 boxes, then why would it be so hard to bring out AmigaOnes that
are basically PCs with the Matrox card in them? I for one would be
happier spending £600 on a brand new PC than bolt anything else onto
my ageing A1200.
I own a Z4 tower from eyetech with the Z4 bus and a CV64/3D in it.
To upgrade to an AmigaOne would mean firstly getting a PPC card (about
300 quid), the predator board (God knows how much that will cost), the
new Matrox graphics card and that sound card plus more ram and
whatever else to have a bodgy system.
I would much rather spend the money on an x86 box.

>In order to facilitate this transition, the classic Amiga operating system will see its lifeline extended. OS3.9, to be launched before Christmas will add a raft of new features and functionality, and will be able to run on the Eyetech AmigaOne PPC classic products.
Sorry?? what does this mean?
It runs on an A1200 with blizzardPPC or what?
Hmm.. It's released before christmas. The AmigaOne upgrade is available 2001 Q1. Seems that I answered th question myself :)
>In order to implement all the features of the AmigaOne specification the, A1200 and A4000 upgrade versions will feature one AGP and six PCI slots, a user-upgradable G3/G4 (Macintosh-type) cpu slot, up to 512MB SDRAM and a high speed IDE/ATAPI interface. The system will be dual-bootable both into the Amiga DE and into Classic Amiga Workbench. This latter feature will allow purchasers to have the performance benefits of full G3/G4 cpu speeds and 512MB of SDRAM memory whilst running Classic Amiga software.
Sounds like the announced Predator with the onboard sdram and G3/G4 slot. They added 2 PCI slots
Good to know that the G3/G4 addon is a MAC accelerator. (they cost about 300EURO).
This is not an option for PPC-less amiga users.
You have to buy a BlizzardPPC with Predator and G3/G4 board.
probably something like 900 EURO.
The Mediator + SharkPPC is a much better option, but not likely. No AGP.....
G-Rex? No AGP, No G3/G4

Nobody said that Eyetech is the one making the stand-alone boxes... There will be
plenty of options prior to Q3-- but the AmigaOne, to be released then, will
run the new Amiga OS native and I wouldn't expect that to be ready until the hosted

Well I am expecting this new Amiga 1200 add on too be very costly, sadly I am sure in the end after buying a Tower, PPC, and the Slot board, everything will in the end cost just as much as the Amiga one, in which case, why even bother giving us that option, it is bull!!!
On the other hand, if I can have the slot board, a Tower, and a G4 for my 1200 for no more than $650. I will be glad to do it, actually this would be awsome. Otherwise I am going with the Mediator, and an 060 so I can at least have an Amiga that sports support for all existing apps, not to mention to ability to purchase GFX cards, TV Tuners, and Sound Cards at a realistic price. Key word here "REALISTIC".
But what I would die for is an Amiga for a PCI slot, or the Siemse PCI board so I can just put my 1200 in a big case along side my Amiga one or what ever. Would be better than spending $200 just for a freaking case for the 1200, now that is BULL CRAP!!
Now Amiga OS 3.9 sounds kool though, will that be a free upgrade to OS 3.5 for those who bought it? I didn't but I am just asking :)

An interesting approach by AI.
When they wouldn't say if they would emulate the old amigas on the new platform or no I suspected that they would rely on using the amiga on a card solution that somebody (siamese?) was developing.
Personally I don't think they Eyetech solution is for me. My 1200 is dying, and is for the most part completely outdated and outclassed by everything else out.
I was interested in the standalone ATX board, but I'm not going to wait until Q301 to get one. I'd much rather spend my dosh on a cheap Duron 650.
I think I'm not alone in wanting a system that I can run Windoze (for a few apps, but mostly for games!) and the Amiga DE on.

My Windows days are pretty well over, I mostly only use it for MSN to keep in touch with my pro Microsoft buddy in Florida, and for Disc Juggler and nero Burn.
As for games, well my Dreamcast is making me love cousel machines all over again, Quake 3! woooohooo!

I'm really happy to hear about the option for classic users, as I just invested a lot of money in an A1200-PowerTower-PPC240mhz-060/50.
To all you people complaining about the "NEW" AmigaOne computer not going to be released until Q3 01, you have to remember that you can always buy a PC with the specs released by Amiga Inc. and run the New AmigaDE on that.
