(Cutting, pasting, & elaborating from my unmoderated posting)
Not bad (the screenshot), but it could use a little cooler gadgets & icons.
Looked at Mac OS X beta the other day. It's a very cool looking desktop (it
may even be pretty useful, though it's a little early to tell). Just about
anything looks cooler than the Win 2K GUI (but that's not aiming high enough
IMO).
CD player interface reminds me a little of QT 4, though. It never hurts to
polish things up a bit, but lets make the UI consistent guys. I have no pro-
blem with the brushed metal look, but why not add it to the window borders
as well. They come off kind of plain when compared to the CD player (reminds
me of the blandness of Windoze UI when compared to all MP3 player skins that
one could load).
It would be cool to have the capability to load your own look (see Kaliedoscope
on Mac OS - changes the appearence of the whole desktop interface, not just the
look of certain apps).

The program that played the AVI file certainly was MooVID...maybe in some sort of SE-version in the finished OS perhaps ?

On the investment side, it will be difficult for individual international users to find out the legal/practical details.

Amiga know how many machines were sold in each market and getting details for the main markets should not be too difficult for a company with access to legal resources.

Fleecy probably already knows about the UK!

just a short info about bplan (taken from amiga-news.de)
website: www.bplan-gmbh.de
registriert auf:
person: Thomas Knaebel
address: bplan
address: In der Au 27
address: 61440 Oberursel
address: DE
e-mail: bplan@edv-knaebel.de
nic-hdl: TK8775-RIPE
changed: lastchange@denic.de 20000811
source: DENIC
The postal adress and the font they use for their logo remind me of
phase5 somehow (phase5 plan b?)
Anyway, this Thomas Knaebel seems to be the owner of a Mac store (see
http://edv-knaebel.de/)

Interesting, it seems that since Haaghe/Partner have taken over publishing AmiTCP/Genesis, and are also developing AmigaOS, Genesis will now be bundled with OS 3.9, as opposed to the Miami of 3.5. Judging by the screenshot.

In der Au 27, Oberursel is/was phase 5's exact address! I had a look in my CV64/3D manual, where Thomas Knäbel is credited as "Best boy on set", whatever that could mean...
EDV on the other hand do not seem to be producing/designing any hardware on their own. The PPC750/7400 Mac accelerators on their site are all phase5 products (with links to phase5's dead site).

In reply to Comment 1 (MAS):
I agree.. that old window bar look should be scrapped for something more attractive/configurable (like birdie/visualprefs).
Os3.5 was meant to bring a lot of new features that users added by installing patches and hacks. However I reckon it severely lacked a lot of stuff that a lot of people use. I for one only deleted a single patch from my startup when I switched to os3.5.. newicons.
I think if they want people to rush out and get 3.9, they should think about integrating some more of the patches ; Visualprefs, Birdie, MRQ , Freewheel, kingCon, magicmenu...etc. The user wouldn't need to actually use them if he/she didnt want to, but they'd be there for people who cant live without them.. eg: me :o))
The point being, I found 3.5 very stable until I started adding kludges here and there, then the crashes started. It also makes boot time much longer when I've got about 6 or 7 extra programs to load.
On top of that, I'd love to see a big update in the listers / icon display. The standard listers are very bland & unconfigurable, something more along the lines of the Magellan Listers would be great (I love having popup menus for files). Also, the icon display is still quite slow, I get a lot of disk churning when opening a window with lots of files in it. Even windows doesnt do that :)
I think 'Preferences' is the magic word here, I'd love to be able to change *everything* about my desktop.. one of the things I loved about the amiga compared to other OS's in the first place.

In reply to Comment 8 (Electric Head):
I agree.. I am/was using all these patches except MRQ. ("was" in one case because it caused deadlocks - which still happen, only a little bit less often)
Especially two things that should be made are popup cycle gadgets and a bigger bottom window frame !!
Configurable menues and shortcuts, too...

In reply to Comment 2 (Ville Sarell):
If MooVid is bundled with 3.9... then Amiga even _officialy_ supports
none of the codecs that are commonly used nowadays... :-)
I for one do not need a AVI/QT player that lacks support of DIVX,MPxx
IV4+ etc. codecs..

The phase5 strategy didn't work... So they must use plan b :-)

And lets just hope they're full versions. If I wanted demos, I'd go to aminet and download them in a few minutes.

Surely there's an MPEG player aswell? I for one don't waste my time downloading QT or AVI since they take ten times as long to download, are postage stamp size and run for about 5 seconds. I would have liked to have seen a nicer GUI layout liek Birdie and Visual Prefs.

Not much there either.
Don't know if they are related/same or not???

hmmmm, they kept that quite! OS3.5 was being shouted about over a year
before the relase, and they want to get OS3.9 out by Christmas?
I'm also wondering about Amiga's ability to count.. 3.0, 3.1, 3.5, 3.9
?
It also means I have to make another partition on hard half formatted
hard drive, and yet another day trying to get the thing to work with
the power flyer!
Oh well, the price of progress....
Richard Brooklyn.

Yes, they always had problems with counting *L*
Let's see there was: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 2.0, 2.1, 3.0, 3.1, 3.5, and now 3.9
Actaully they skip some numbers when they believed they have made major changes.
For example 2.0 was originally called 1.4 but they changed it to 2.0 because it was such a major change.

Well, at least they're better at counting than Microsoft. They went
straight from Windows 98 to Windows 2000, skipping 1902 version
numbers.

You don't seem to know the divx codec!? I for one downloaded the

see a divx codec on the amiga!
