Chris Moore writes: Eyetech group have released an article on their web site explaning the new AmigaOne A1200 and A4000 PPC systems. The system can actually run without the A1200/A4000 motherboard. The article explains all about the new systems and has a brief history of the Eyetech Group. The A1200/A4000 motherboards are an expansion of the AmigaOne, rather than the other way round and will be able to run MorphOS or OS3.9 as well as AmigaDE natively.

I'm only unsure about one thing: will I be able to run my existing WarpUp stuff on this machine?

Sounds good. I'm very surprised and pleased that it is a complete solution and not just a Predator/Blizzard upgrade.
I have a couple of questions though:
1. Will the WarpUp stuff work?
2. Will I need to HDD's, or can the AmigaDE be put ona partition?

In reply to Comment 2 (Radfoo):
It would obviously be up to you..you could have a separate drive for each environment or you could partition a single drive. There is no difference in what they are doing here than say running Linux+windows on a single drive with different partitions.

Considering Haage-Partner are writing the code for the uprgrade, i would say that Warpup would be included for sure.

If WarpUp works then it sounds great.
It would have been nice if the spec had been released before everyone starting speculating, from looking at other comments linked to the AmigaOne announcment many people though it was a Blizzard/Cyberstorm PPC, Predator and A1200/A4000 system.

You would think, i'd like to see some information on Haage and Partners or Amiga's web site.

I've got every reason to believe that OS3.9 is delivered with WarpUp.
I would not be surprised if Ralph &Co do not support AmigaOne1200/4000,
but hopefully they do.
A friend of mine said that MorphOS works nicely on his BPPC.

btw. I have started to get following e-mails from my Linux using friends:
"Amiga 1.0:/$ speed

Will the Classic OS run at 020 speeds on a 1200 since I can't use a Accelerator card with it, and will there be given an ide converter cable to reach the bays in the tower!??! This is very improtant! :)
how much again??

This is all wonderful news! I wonder how much it will cost though, 'cause I don't see any prices...

ok, here's one:
since my blizzardPPC+ won't be usable in the new system, will there be a SCSI card available, since 1 hard drive and both my CDROM and CDR are SCSI units
anyone want to buy a BlizzardPPC, BlizzardVision and a Z4 busboard? ;)

No, it won't run at 020 speed, since the 68k will be emulated on the G3/G4 processor.
Seems they will use H&P emulation for this.

This is great news...
sounds very expensive though...
justlookat the things you have to add your self (to get the AmigaOne running)
is it just me or are Matrox cards in the more expensive range of HW ??

"They are the first two of many," McEwan said in an interview today. The plug-in
cards to upgrade current Amiga systems will cost about $500, including a CPU,
McEwan said. A stand-alone machine will cost about $800. "
So Bill reckons that they should cost, what 300UKP including CPU? Which is not bad as it includes ethernet, USB PCI card etc. a 10gb hard-drive is fairly cheap and most people already have CD-ROMs, same for modems. It's the Video & Audio cards that will be most expensive to add, and possibly Firewire though I can't understand why you'd NEED firewire. I guess that's just to have 'AmigaOne' status
So 550UKP ish for what is essentially a new computer?

from the specs release i assume firewire is for video capture / editing (at least thats what it says)
cant say i'd rush out and get firewire either, but there you go ;)

Emulation is all very nice and a good way to go and all that... IF it works fast enough and reliably!
Anyone know of any non-vapour speeds it might work on a 400MHz G4? If its substantially less than an '060, a lot of people will be unhappy...

I read in a few places (i.e. UK Magazines) that H&P (or was it P5?) had emulation working at 040 speeds using a PowerPC 603e.
I'm pretty sure that with a decent amount of L2 Cache and a G4 processor you'd at least get 060/50 speed emulation. But I have no solid benchmarks.

I think we've been though this 68K emulation thing before...didn't
H&P say their 68K emulation got about 060 speeds (faster for some
things, slower for others) with a 233MHz 604e? So a 400MHz G4
should do fine.

Hi!
Well to clear some things up: In the original Eyetech text it says
"runs either the H&P 68k Emulation or MorphOS". And the H&P 68k Emulation
includes WarpUP. So this means the AmigaOne 1200 and AmigaOne 4000 will
obviously run WarpUP (the 68k Emulation of H&P is an expansion of the
WarpUP system, with 68k Emulation and "some stuff" added to WarpUP).
About the speed... it depends of course on the CPU, but on current
Boards 040 speed is reached. On a fast G3 or G4 060 speed should be
reached at least (maybe even faster).

Oops, guess I should have read all the comments before posting. That
figure of £550 sounds about right to me, but how come all the G3/G4
Macs are in the +£1000 bracket if this will be (comparatively) cheap?
To be honest I had a few doubts over the last (hectic) weekend about
the boards, what with all the speculation and rumour, but my mind is
at rest now and I'm just looking forward to opening the box and
playing :)
Just think how Heretic 2 will play with a G4 and a next gen graphics
card :)

A G3/4 is not included with this deal. You could buy a second hand one though, that's what I'm going to do. If I can find one. Eyetech'll probably do deals for the GFX card and Soundcard etc. though.

Hey good one, who do you think invented AmigaPPC add-on boards. Be assured
Ralph Schmidt is laughing more evily then you know right now, and MorphOS will
or course run on these "AmigaONE" add-on cards <g>.
Amiga Users like Amigas, is it that hard to understand?

Well at the moment Firewire is mostly used for video editing with MiniDV/DVCAM camcorders but you can adda bunch of other stuff and if the idea of 64 Hot-pluggable Hard disks appeals to you then Firewire is one way to do it.
Think of Firewire as USB on Steroids.

In reply to Comment 15 (Ian):
Well considering a G3/G4 is going to easily out perform a 603/604 at the same clock rate and current emu speeds are fairly decent 040'ish. Add to that the slowest G3/G4 available is 400 then speeds should surpass that of the 060 easily. The thing that slows down emu's anyway is the custom chip emulation whihc shouldn't be necessary in this case.
But aren't you really missing the point what is the point of getting a G3/G4 processor etc and using it to emulate a totally outdated platform. People really need to let go of the classic series and move on to something more current. But I guess new sw is not going to be too prevalent so emulation will be neceasrry until there is an acceptable level of performance.
However is people keep clinging ontop the classic and don't develop for the new env then all this discussion is basically pointless...the amiga will be truely dead

ya, if the sell for $500 with CPU, then I will be amazed!!!
As for Firewire, Bring it on, just consider it the first step in modern Video Toasterism. Amiga must be the best or damn near close to it, at video manipulation, that was partly what Amiga was always about!

I think most people will be buying AmigaOne PPC 1200/4000's so they can run the new AmigaDE. Being able to run classic software at accelerated speeds is just the bonus. And what a bonus! :)
What I'm wondering is wether there will be some sort of scandoubler or passthrough for AGA screens, or wether we'll need two monitors. I dont like the idea of having an extra monitor just for old games, guru's and the boot screen.

Yes, but there's no software for it. I don't know how other ppl think about this, but I *might* be tempted to fork out a large sum of money to support a platform which may develop into something, but only if it does something current as well.
I wasn't asking if the thing would work *faster* than Classic as a benefit, just whether I would be downgrading my existing setup.
That's why I never bought a way-overpriced PPC card - almost nothing uses it. If this new system looks like it might *use* a SharkPPC or something, I'd like one.
Oh, and before anyone flames my ears off, I know there is a load of PPC datatypes and utils popping up now, but its really too little too late, IMHO :(
