Henrik Mikael Kristensen writes: Photogenics runs on Windows, Linux, QNX and all the others through AmigaDE. That's right. Photogenics runs on AmigaDE! According to Bill McEwen it took Paul Nolan only three weeks to port it. The original Linux version took several months to port. Read more about Bill's AmigaDE demonstration on this show report here, which also contains some (blurry) screenshots. I posted a link to the show report before, but didn't emphasize on Photogenics, which has now been done. :)

The demo of Photogenics on the AmigaDE sure did make me happy. There were also other demo's that were shown at the seminars. I have the whole thing on my MiniDV. I am just waiting for some webspace to come my way, then I'll upload all the footage I have (in a compressed, lesser format (I don't think that ppl will be able to download 250Mb per 1 minute of footage that the miniDV tends to give)
There is also some footage from another few ppl that will no doubt be uploaded somewhere. (There were 2 other Digital Video cameras that I saw there)

I also was impressed with the 3 week port. Sounds like it may be a good indication that others like ImageFX and Lightwave/Toaster stuff could have a good shot at being converted. At least it should make it more attractive to port if it really does go that smoothly. It would be great to see some things like Deluxe Paint 2000 to run on the new AmigaDE. I always was partial to that paint package. Ok...so maybe none of these will never happen, but one can always hope. :)

In reply to Comment 2 (Tony Gore):
Oh man!!! Wouldn't that be the goat that did Photoshop in... ImageFX on AmigaDE... Hell Ya! Photogenics is one of the best digital canvas programs out there, but when it comes to serious high end graphics processing, I've not seen anything touch ImageFX for it's power and flexibility.

It was a 3 week port from the Linux version, which was in turn a 6 month port from the Amiga version. So ports from Amiga -> DE would take about 6/7 months. And I don't think there is a Linux version of IFX is there?

If Photogenics can be changed to run on AmigaDE and then it can
run on Linux or Windows, or OS9, or whatever, that will be very
good for programmers who can multiply their works availability
by writing to AmigaDE. The obvious next step is to write for
AmigaDE native so that you can have no processor hit for operating on
a different processor or on a different OS. When Amiga's can
run on a host of processors, and hopefully the fastest ones, then
Amigas will always be fastest. Hopefully other chip makers, (graphic
and sound chipmakers) will want to optimize their designs to
allow AmigaDE to use their chips...
The strategy appears very good at this time. I know, if I see this
type of product (i.e. AmigaDE etc.) and it really works, and there
are applications and hardware I will buy it. Of course, I will still
use my Amigas for whatever I can. I don't want to lose their functionality..
I wonder if anyone would write an Amiga DE application that could run
on 68000 series chipsand the Amiga chipsets???? they have commodore 64
emulators for PC and Amiga....why not?

Photogenics took 6 months to port because Paul Nolan made a portable gui engine. This engine, makes the code easier to port, because it reduces the need of utilising the various OSes GUI engines (windows, gtk+, intuition etc...).
