In a posting in the unmoderated section here on ANN, Kevin Orme asked whether AmigaCentral.com was still around. In a comment posted as reply, Chris Korhonen wrote: Basically, we decided it was no longer viable to continue the site. From our point of view the Amiga is dead, very little software and support. And Amiga's current plans may sound nice but they will either: a) Never Appear b) Apear, but, will not be anything like the amiga you know and love. Which will leave amiga owners with some non standard hardware which is of limited use. It was good whil it lasted but its time to call it a day.

Wrong.. read the executive update:
The first in our AmigaONE series of products are the AmigaONE PPC 1200, and the AmigaONE PPC 4000 cards from Eyetech. These products will become available to developers in December this year.

Eventually they will be crawling back ;)
They probably don`t know those great Amiga community people working at Amiga Inc. Haven`t bought an Amiga SDK and don`t understand why this is the best way to go.

It seems they departed just as it was getting good! PCI, New Machines, New OS, SDK, New Games, MorphOS... (and so on)... An exciting time I think! It's a shame they won't be around for it.

I'd just like to add something to this : I was the News Editor on AmigaCentral, and I don't agree with Chris' views on the new Amiga. I'm really looking forward to it. AmigaCentral just stagnated and died, only the news ever updated, and even then it was eclipsed by sites like this one and Czech Amiga News. We just hadn't the resources to compete.
Don't take its demise as any kind of comment on the Amiga situation in general. (Chris is of course entitled to his views ;-)

Well no matter what Chris think.
The amiga has never been more alive now, than any time the last 6 years.
And as stated above, new amiga, new os, MorphOS, Native AmigaDE on computers that will be out in december.
ha the amiga dead, what were this guy thinking.

Yeah, well- all of you...
The Boxer was supposed to come out about six times- The A4000's were supposed to be put back in production from Quikpak-
The Amiga was supposed to be based on QNX, no LINUX, no JAVA VM...
Yeah, it sounds nice, but you can't live off of a pretend machine on the internet. The fact remains that it isn't in front of my face
and it doesn't do me much good. These people are right. VERY factual, regardless of how great Amiga DE is.
The business owners that sell Amiga products can't make money on promises and I can't do video/3D manipulation on a promise either.
I need a product in front of me. All of you are as hopeful as myself with the final release of an Amiga, but I've heard this crap before.
No, OS or machine, then no interest. I'm here on an IBM/Comp machine with my Amiga 3000/040 next to it, sort of collecting dust because there really
isn't anything useful on it, I won't upgrade it because buying a Zorro card of any sort (modem, graphics accelerator, sound card, etc...) costs more to
buy for Amigas than an entire Wintel system. How is it that the MAC CPU upgrades, and the new Amiga DE CPU cards actually cost less as G3/4's when the
crap 233 MHz PPC (604e) upgrades cost about a grand or more???
Look, alot of this is crap. To come out with a machine with specs that match what's on the market already as industry standard garbage is no great
accomplishment. It's already there! DELL could get it for you over the phone now!
Honestly, folks, I'm looking forward to the new Amiga DE as an OS or hosted OS- Don't get too hyped up on the computer.

"a) Never Appear b) Apear, but, will not be anything like the
amiga you know and love",
What exactly does he say that is incorrect?
Anybody who's used the AmigaSDK/Elate/Tao stuff would be quite dillusional, to
say it feels in any way like AmigaOS. It's a complete new OS on new hardware, if
you believe the Amiga is just a namebadge, then fine you will get your new Amiga.
If you believe the Amiga is a small lightweight responsive OS, coupled to mated
hardware for optimized performance (which I do) then Elate/TAO couldn't be further
from it, in fact the opposite could be said slow unresponsive OS, on generic hardware.

Yes both used/seen, nothing remarkable, I set the SDK aside after having problems
with C compiler bugs, as well as licensing issues, which haven't been resolved to
my satisfaction. I don't argue that the Elate/TAO scheme isn't a good idea for
specific devices, I am saying it has nothing to do with the original Amiga other
then the nameplate.

I hope that these men are telling something wrong.
They say that the new Amigas will be very different with the classic ones.
Amiga Inc. has to demonstrate their mistake building a new system COMPATIBLE with the old one.I think this is the real problem to solve for the Amigaone ,Two, Three....

Funny that EXACTLY the same discussion is happening in the Mac market
at the moment. DieHard Mac fans claim that MacOS X has nothing in
common with MacOS other than its nameplate (MacOS X runs older Mac
apps via emulation mode called "Classic" and is based on an Unix/BSD
style kernel). This discussion is just so useless.

Today the computer industry is very specialized. With multi billion companies making solely good CPUs, graphic chipsets, OSs, sound chips, etc. Amiga can only be unique in one of these specialized if you think rationally that is.
Amiga`s choice to produce an OS upon the most remarkable OS technology available is a good choice IMHO. Much better than making the best graphic chips available. (What a waste of energy would that be, as there are already some very good solutions)
The new Amiga is an Amiga for me because it IS ultra efficient and IS very powerful and IS being designed by the people I trust and respect within the community.
It won`t be an OS soley for 68K processors (thank god!), it won`t solely use expensive non standard equipment, we CAN move to new superior CPU architectures when they become available without losing one application.
Is it so hard to see that this is actually the best approach we could have wished for?
Sincerely, Mike Bouma.

So tell me, how can an OS which has Real Time responses be so slow on 500Mhz+ machines, comared to 060/50Mhz Classic AmigaOS machines ???
No other than Amiga Inc people and tao-group people have the real knowledge of the speed of the system on native setup !
Anyone suggesting that Amiga could have a future by just continuing the classic line, is a moron.
Give the guys at AInc a change !

PS. thank god it is not just a JAVA VM ...

Actually I was already excited about Tao`s efforts way before Amiga announced their alliance with them.(I am happy they did!)
The same goes for QNX Neutrino (QNX RtP), as I knew what QNX4 was capable of and having heard about the things they were going to improve with Neutrino.
I for instance never supported Amiga/Gateway`s Linux plans though.

In reply to Comment 25 (Mike Bouma):
Mike I couldn't agree with you more. I don't know why people are so stuck on the classic platform when they them selfs are stating that their Amiga 500, 2000, 3000, and 4000 are collecting a bit of dust next to their pc. Well that goes to show that the platform is dying.
Amiga Inc. has taken the right approach Commodor lost the great atvantage it had when it came to graphic chipsets. Remember back then ther was no Matrox or Ndiva or Voodoo just the Amiga with its custom chips. But we blew that lead and now the pc industry is full of chipset makers that surpass what even the triple A chip set was to do. So why fight the tide when we can use it to our advantage.
The thing the world needs is a standar that unifies all computing from desktop, ,settop, laptop, plamtop to phone tops.
The pc was that standard that got applications to unifie and run on a common platform under Incense(intel) M$winbloat. However that left out alot of other chip makers sus as sun, sony, 3com, Motorola etc.. who wanted to paly as well.
Well here comes AmigaDE with the power to let all these chip makers play in a leveled feild. The DE also gives you the user the option as to which chip maker you want to use you are no longer tied down to the wintel world. Freedom is around the corner you just have to take that step. You see the World Is Ready for change. Are You?

Look, I just meant that we've heard alot already and I won't believe a damn thing until that machine and the OS is sitting in front of me.
I've been a user since the release of the A1000- I've owned an A2000, 2500, two A3000/040's, and an A500. Don't tell me I'm stupid, dumbass- I may be young, but I've been following the Amiga's progress for years.
