In my opinion 99 dollar for an Amiga SDK is peanuts (at least for serious developers). Anyway I will be ordering a Windows Amiga SDK next thursday.

I agree. $99 is no money at all when compared to other developer packages
in the industry. I feel I should emphasize that, since when I re-read my
submission it almost came across as if I was just another one of the
compulsive whiners in the "community".
The chance to "win" the sidegrade from Linux seems to be a great way to
accelerate people's productivity with what they already have.

I agree with you that $99 is peanuts for a (fully working, all needed API's included!) developer enviroment but there are reasons why it still might be too much.
1. Most people compare the Amiga SDK with developer enviroments for already established platforms, you can't compare prices with developer enviroments for windows or more exotic unix flavours like Solaris.
2. Amiga NEEDS a lot of programmers using the SDK, currently it is only (or mostly) old Amiga users who use it. They NEED programmers to make software for what will be their MAIN product the AmigaDE.
We need people who "just" wants to make some freeware/shareware software to make it for our platform instead of Linux/Qnx or other platforms where the developer enviroment is free.
Please take a look at the OpenAmiga mailing list, it's not like there are that many users of it( maybe 200 or so?), it's mostly the same people posting.
We need to get more developers, serious aswell as amateur, interested in the SDK and that could be done by lowering the price, make free download or something completely diffrent.

I either don't think it is to much money but if you have bought the Linux version (As I did) and don't use Linux (or don't want to learn it just for the sake of the SDK) it's a pity. I wont order a new version just for windows and I'm not going to install Linux again and make a program just for trying to get a sideupgrade...
So.. I'm in a nowin situation...

Err, maybe I didn't quite understand, but why on earth did you buy the Linux version in the first place if you had no intention of actually installing Linux?

And just a reminder: You DO get 12 months of free updates when you buy either the Linux or Windows SDK (for the version you purchased). Linux SDK owners just got the first update, 1.01 (free download).

If you ask me, it would be better to give the Linux SDK buyers the chance to buy the Windows version for half price or something - at least that way, they'd attract more custom. (Rather than hold a 'competition' for who gets a version).
Personally, I think that (at least now in the early days) the dev kits should be heavily subsidised by Amiga and possibly Tao. They should be making it as attractive as possible to prospective coders.

Hey I have GCC for Linux and it's free. Whay dhoud i spend $99 US on a SDK. Whay do I wont to develop on somting no one uses. You can't run SDK program whit out SDK eny way!!!!.

Hey, and Compuquick is apparently selling the Windows version for US$89, so at least that's $10 off the $99 price! ;^)

RtP is a free dev environment, and a quite nice one too. :)
When I first heard about AInc releasing a SDK, I assumed it would be free. I assumed wrong though. It's good that they set the price at $99 though, because it weeds out a lot of curious people who wanted to give it a whirl instead of developing for the platform. Plus, the $99 buys you a load of support from some fairly nice guys (and maybe gals too) over at AInc. It also gives them some revenue to help develop the platform. Everybody wins.

That sounds like a good idea..lets discourage people who are curious and might develop as we only want the serious "elite" coders working on the OS. Where the hell do you thin kthat new coders are going to come from.
The Amiga needs new blood in order to survive and you never know one of those curious coders could become the next John Carmack.
Anyway they should be giving the SDK away anyhow - it's outrageous to be charging for an incomplete dev kit anyhow when most of the core is free anyhow. Charging for it is precisely the way to stop people developing for it. The strength of Linux and the classic is that anyone with a C compiler can write code for it without purchasing something from a central point.
