An Amiga One FAQ is now online. It mostly answers what the differences between AmigaOS 3.9 and AmigaDE are, and what kind of hardware both will run on.
AmigaOne FAQ : Comment 1 of 27ANN.lu

Does this mean that, as the 680x0 processor is emulated by the AmigaONE board's PPC processor, "normal" Amiga screen modes will be displayed through the Matrox card onto a SVGA monitor or will we still need a RGB monitor attached to the old Amiga video out connector to play the really old boot-off-a-floppy games?

I don't think that kind of information has been released yet. I suggest you email your query to Amiga, so they can update the next faq.

Hang on, so if I buy an AmigaOne1200 from Eyetech I'll still need my A1200 motherboard, or is it optional?

In reply to Comment 3 (Rik Sweeney):
Apparently it will work without an A1200/A4000, but you wont be able use the Clasic emulation.

Somebody better start porting UAE to AmigaDE! ;-)

In reply to Comment 1 (Darrin):
I sent about 8 questions to the AmigaOne FAQ address, but only one of them was answered. Yeah I asked if we will need two monitors, one for AGA screens and another for Matrox screens. They didnt answer if there was going to be a passthrough or scandoubler or something.
Comment 5: UAE is already ported to AmigaDE :)

I hope the screens are all passed through the graphics card as my old Commodore 1081 monitor is held together with duct-tape and chewing-gum.

Instead of making multiple boards for various models
of A3000s & A4000s, what about putting the
add-on board in an external box?
no worries about real estate problems. just
connect the box via a cable to the internal
cpu socket.

I would imagine that if you booted off a floppy, you would be screwed with the 020 CPU that is on the 1200, as well as an RGB monitor. In the long run, that is not bed considering that most Floppy based games should never require anything hire, but on the other hand having an RGB setting near by can be a pain in the ass for some people (not me).
The best deal would to be the first company to offer a scan doubler at a VERY reasonable price, it can't be that expensive to construct, and would save a lot of people a lot of hassel.
Right now I believe a Scan Doubler runs about $90+ !??!
Sorry, I don't think so...
A larger table is cheaper. :P
Anyhow it would be intense if this add on board worked also as a scan doubler, but that would be getting my hopes up, Amiga would have announced that already.
Also was wondering, since 68k Emulation is not perfected, I am sure the OS will still be booting on top of the old 020!?!?

The Eyetech boards plug in the processor slot, so the processor(s) of your (my)
"classic" amiga will no more be available at all (you can sell them, or put in your
drawer for future resurrection of the old classic)

My interpretation of the FAQ is "yes" to that question. It says OS library calls will use the new hardware, but the A1200 MB will provide hardware for anything that doesn't use the RTG OS calls. ie: Most recent stuff will be ok.
Whether that means the MB is optional if you never want to run old games stuff is anybody's guess..

Although the earlier thread concerning the Elbox system, which *may* be AmigaOne compatible (although not officially yet), suggests that system will be able to keep the existing 68K accelerator system in place, whereas the AmigaOne doesn't.

thing is, there shouldnt be any room for "interpretation" in an FAQ, it should be explicit

Novel idea, but...
the A1200 cpu slot is different from the A3000 cpu slot is slightly different from the A4000 cpu slot. The cable can't be too long, or else it can't work. i.e. the signal on the cpu bus on a A3000 probably has frequency of 25MHz. So, say you put an address on the bus, it has to "make it" to the other end of the bus before the next clock "tick" or else things get messed up.
Anyways, you would still need to do logic for each different Amiga model to interface between the cpu bus and the busboard, so you still have at least two different models. Note, it is only the busboard that's different, all three models of the busboard share the same cpu cards (Shark in the case of Elbox and Mac cards in the case of Predator+).

To see the Amiga take hold we must all support it in one way or another.
Unfortunately this may mean losing some of the older games, but on the other
hand we are gaining 3D acceleration.
One person was asking about needing dual monitors. To answer the question, UEA
doesn't, so AmigaDE will not either.

hmmm.
So according to the faq, we can run the AmigaDE on current Amigas but
we have to have Linux running as well. So while Linux slows everything
down, people who have already spent £100s and that are made of money
can buy the upgrade board from Eyetech that does what exactly? (and
yes, I have TRIED to follow the news - but failed).
For Linux, would LinuxAPUS do? What about drivers for stuff? The
AmigaDE won't have many drivers to start off with, and the
Linux/Workbench drivers will be useless won't they?
Do I HAVE to buy the Eyetech boards to use the new AmigaDE? Can I keep
my Amiga1200PPC?
Thanks.
Richard Brooklyn.

If i hear someone mention UAE again, I am going to puke, this stupid little program is good for the most basic shit, but when I install Dopus, my Icons get fucked really bad, when i try to run Amirc, nothing happens it uses up memory, then releases it, woohoo, Id rather use my 1200 with 020.

Again, we already has answers, on the Eyetech site:
"As and when Classic Software can be run under the Amiga DE the old Amiga could actually be disposed of"
"More likely is that the whole process will give an added impetus to a Classic Amiga 'emulator' under Amiga DE, which will allow the old Amiga to be thrown away and the new PCI resources to be used by Classic Amiga software."
