Tao partners with two Japanese companies to provide full Japanese localization with character input for the intent platform. Press release below.
Consolidated Application Environment for CE and Cellulars.
Reading, England, November 7, 2000. Tao Group, Justsystem and ASCII have announced a strategic partnership to further accelerate the deployment of the intent(TM) media platform in Japan. Justsystem is the leading supplier of business productivity software in the Japanese market. Under the terms of this partnership the three companies have agreed to
facilitate the Japanese localization of Tao's high performance
multimedia Java environment for consumer electronics devices.
All three parties expect to complete the Japanese localization of intent within 2000, and subsequently promote it for integration into Japanese Consumer Electronics [CE] products, including cellular phones and PDAs. Justsystem is developing the intent version of its acclaimed Japanese conversion engine, ATOK, which will then be provided to intent OEM vendors in Japan. Justsystem is also building up CE-targeted Java
applications, which can then be deployed as ASP services. ASCII is
assisting Tao with the input method framework and the basic software
components that are required for enabling Japanese language input.
ASCII's activities already include sales and marketing of Tao products
as a Tao software distributor in Japan.
As the market for digital CE products and Internet-aware cellular phones rapidly expands, the three companies know it is absolutely fundamental to provide a consolidated Java(TM) application environment to
accommodate the needs of the Japanese market in the embedded Java space.
Until now, Japanese character input has been regarded as difficult to
deploy in embedded Java products.
Tao's solution to these issues comes in the form of intent, Java
Technology Edition, specifically designed for the new generation of
digital devices such as smart phones and set-top boxes. intent was
developed by Tao and co-funded with ASCII Corporation. It is a Sun
Microsystems authorized Java Virtual Machine and is famed for its high
speed Java execution. It has now achieved exceptional brand awareness in
Japan as the only provider of a robust multimedia execution environment
across the entire spectrum of embedded products.
Tao has been actively working with global consumer electronics companies across Japan to make sure that the company can deliver, not just
technology leadership, but commercial leadership as well. The Justsystem
announcement follows on from the news that Fujitsu AEL is to manage
Tao's integration and technical support operations in Japan, as well as
porting intent onto the iTRON operating system, the dominant operating
system environment for the embedded industry in Japan.
