At last! Well, I'm convinced. I particularly liked the part about a
decent mediaplayer and icon dock. They didn't specifically mention
MPEG support, but there are already several good MPEG players for PPC
miggys. Nice one, H&P!

I ain't sure about this 3.9 thing yet. To me it still seems to be
nothing but 3.5 PLUS some tools that have been publically available
before PLUS WarpOS V5 (which probably is the best of the
improvements).
I really don't want to whine by any means but I'd rather see things
like Retargable Audio or some major improvements of the GUI.

Good grief.

I was thinking the same thing...DiVX should be included!
And there's should be ready made configurations for AmiDock...if possible!

Well, it certainly _looks_ good. But please, someone tell H&P to provide a reasonably conistent GUI. The MooVID controls together with brushed-metal CD player, together with good ol' blue window borders.... looks messy. Oh, and can someone please fix the half-height horizontal window borders? And some new window gadgets, please. Just because my motherboard is from 1992, my OS doesn't have to look that way.

To all the GUI-whiners:
I think they've made it clear that they won't change the
window gadgets or the windows borders, as it would break
some programs, probably older ones. Remember, this is an OS
we are talking about. Not your own tweaked super-WB...
But do I agree something like SysIHack, should at the least
be included...
Regarding RTA, Amplifier seems to be included. Does this mean
it will support AHI? Or only Paula... AHI is already the de
facto sound standard, so why not make a damn Reaction prefs for
it and say it's the RTA... Would stop whiners, I guess.. ;)
Looking at the specs, it sure sounds up-lifting. This was probably
the feature-laden update everybody expected for OS3.5, but didn't
get. I see lots of Stephan Rupprecht tools included.
Let's hope they've included all their juicy stability and reliability
bug fixers, that were missed in OS3.5.
My main impression: it's great they collected everything you need on
one CD so you don't have to fool around and tweak yourself...

In reply to Comment 1 (Henes):
Yeah, unfortunately, it looks like they merely added many freeware tools... and perhaps some shareware ones.
That's good for newcomers to the Amiga but useless to me.
The CD player looks worse and worse after each release... (maybe next time it will take the whole screen size without any possible iconification and eat 10MB of HD space ?)
ReAction still looks the same - not very pretty; the bottom window borders still are half the height they should be; the zoomable ReAction windows still put the zoom gadget in the right border instead of the bottom border.
I still hope that there will be more insteresting improvements than the ones listed on H&P site. For example at last WB menu configurability, improvements of the "Execute command" window, and bug fixes (for example Enforcer hits by FKey if I remember correctly, Copy not freeing its buffer when an error occurs, PatchWork hits by ReAction)...
I don't know what they mean with the datatypes thing though. And what the new shell is like (VincEd ?)..
(ok this is a quite negative comment but I'm waiting for the final product to make up my mind anyway...)

In reply to Comment 8 (John Doe):
Window gadgets : I like them that way.
Window borders : my only "old" program that has got problems with increasing the bottom window border is... MUI !! If a program does not handle correctly (not so) different window border sizes, then it is not system-friendly. I don't think that the aim of an OS is to change (or rather stay old and ugly) so that badly written programs work correctly :-(

I have to join and whine about the GUI, it should be updated, but but...
The software included in the "OS" should look more the same, as it's now gives
the impression that it's just a CD collection of useful softwares.
Where is the ROMs? I would like to get the advantige from 3.9 already at boot
time and not a half hour later.
One thing that I can't do a shit about is that WarpOS... I guess it's as bad as
before... so the option is to just move to a PPC supporting OS and let the
classic AmigaOS die out.

I would have to agree with this mostly, however... why is it that they refuse to cater to everyone and exclude the darker patterns? Personally, I can't stand any of the patterns that were originally included with OS3.5 (about two or three shades above black is good for me). On the otherhand, they did include two backdrops that were decent (tunnel, and something else).
Someone there needs to check out GothBench3.lha off of the Aminet and consider the inclusion with the approval of the author.
I wonder if we will FINALLY get an animgif.datatype, or at least one that works halfway.

Forget about DivX. It is very CPU consuming and the
current Amigas are not powerful enough to support it
in a decent way (a PIII is a minimun in Wintel world)

Apart from that: DivX is ILLEGAL! It uses Microsoft's MPEG4 algorithm, that's why even the Mac version won't run without an installed Windows Media Player.

OK, everything sure sounds nice. But look at the extremely
over-sized CD player! Not only is it ugly but it will take
up half my screen. I guess it uses skins, but make something
better please...
I think H&P should have had a look at GroovyPlayer; its GUI
resembles that of MooVID, and it's more compact and better
looking. It's freeware too, maybe the source code is even
included (not sure about this one).
BTW, is anyone actually using their miggys as a CD player?
I doubt it, everyone's got a DVD-player nowadays...

There's something that I don't understand. With AmigaAMP and Amplifier being out as long as they have been, you would think that someone would use one of the many CDPlayer routines that are out there which would effectively eliminate the need for the skinned player (if it is skinnable that is). I like the latest beta 8 of AmigaAMP and will prolly continue to use that until something better of his comes out. I've been thoroughly impressed with it.

I don't know about DVD-players, but I'm up with the MP3 DJing thing... I've got a 10GB drive on my miggy devoted to nothing but MP3 files. Let the RIAA cry about it... they've already lost no matter how hard they push.
As far as creating my own "darker" patterns, someone already has a whole set of REALLY good ones on the Aminet, so why double someone else's efforts?

Did I mention that the icon dock was a good thing (even though we all have installed one of these things) ? ;)
One really usefull feature would be configurable datatype sensitive context menues..
And let the icons be sorted/aligned when a drawer is opened..
Faster icons drawing/loading..
argh

i agree that it will be some new tools in the new version of OS
but some the thing that it was NECESSARY to be incuded they
adopt them such as the ROM it was promised for OS3.6 but ....
as i understand now they will start supporting AMigaDE as official
new OS well that don't mean that thay must not provide some upgrade
stuffs for the original OS
Finally seems that MorphOS will be the *new* os for amigas

Like has laready been said, a lot of it just seems to be tools which
are already shareware. But...
Are the tools full or demo versions? Will the AVI player play Indeo
format? How much of it is PPC/CGFX-only? etc..
I'll likely buy it anyway, just to show support, but I was rather
disappointed with OS3.5. I can't imagine this is going to be much
better.. :-/

What did you think OS 3.5 was? An upgrade to 3.1? 3.5 looked like 3.1 with all those hacks installed that you need to make life liveable. I mean it didn't even come with a decent tcp/ip stack...

Well, it looks promising except for that awful gui that we have been stuck with for eight years. My own OS3.0 looks OK now what with my ViRGE setup and all, but I'd like to see more in the way of bug fixes and stability. Considering the way that I have hacked my hardware and software it is a miracle that my A1200 is as stable as it is now. However, I'd love to see a decent task manager so that I don't have to either reboot or leave a window on screen when a Guru occurs.
I am sure that we were promised new ROMS if os3.5 took off. Well, here is 3.9 and I still have heard nothing about any ROM upgrades. Just installing flashy new software on top of the seven year old ROM means we are stuck with the old GUI, and any enhancements are software rather than hardware driven.
AWEB??? Not sure about this. Have only used a fairly old version admittedely, but I find it lacking when compared to IBrowse. Still I found it more stable than Voyager which does not like my machine at all.....
Still, any Web browser and a TCP/IP stack is better then nothing.

I have just read in the german printmag "AmigaOS" that Haage&Partner
originally wanted this "upgrade" to be labeled OS4.0 !!
How ridiculous! This feels really _crazy_ to me. As far as the
features they announced are concerned, OS3.7 would be more
appropriate (if at all)!
All the stuff that I and probably most of us Amigans have been
waiting for since ages is _not_ in there (at least not announced):
- NO RTG "movement"
- NO RTA (which was announced for 3.5 IIRC)
- NO preparations for G3/G4 things (even if -- in its 1st version --
it would only be for psychological reasons!)
- NO new GUI (no need to patch those old 3.1 gadgets/windows, just
ADD some new colorful and modern GUI elements with a new API!)
- NO multi-threaded workbench
- NOT even a better "Execute command" window
- NO new "stop-the-patching" ROM chip (which, admittedly, is probably
a question of production costs)
Then I ask myself, who do they aim at with this 3.9 thing?
Do they want to reach some "lost souls" who left the Amiga
sometime ago? They very probably won't come back because of stuff
like an AVI player that cannot play most movies leeched from the
net today (and, if I trust voices on the net, does not even come
as PPC version). So lets forget about these people.
They very probably want to reach the long-time classic Amiga
die-hards! But! Do _they_ need a new shell? Don't most of us have a
TCP/IP stack? Do we need a crippled browser with even _security
features disabled_ (we are talking about an _OS_ folks!)?
I do not think so!
