From Amigart: "WarpUp 5 doesn't contain any revolutionary changes or features, but we have tried to eliminate as many problems as possible. Additionally we have tried to implement features which were requested by developers working on WarpUp projects. The much-discussed multitasking-lock-problem might have disappeared, but I rely on your feedback to know if this is true. Please also consider, that your problem might not be the same as the problem of other people have similar symptoms. The WarpUp 5 package also contains a recent version of the PowerUp emulation package, which is also considered a beta version, which should be tested as much as possible. Please report problems concerning the PowerUp emulation to its author (Frank Wille)."

Unfortunately, this does not seem to make the upcoming OS3.9 anything
(more) worthy. Looking at the features H&P announced, WarpUP V5 was my
last hope for something exciting! :-(

Yeah, nothing exciting at all. Just the fact that my computer system is no longer locking up randomly when multitasking with the PPC doesn't say much at all let alone the features that developers have been asking for to be implemented into the kernal doesn't mean jack either.
With some of these implementations, we just may see FastQuake5 finally working under emulation (no luck just yet, waiting to see what comes of the emulation libraries).

The link doesn't work, and I am redirected to Haage homepage, where I only find Wup 4 :-(

Well, the comment I would make....WarpOS5 is supposed to be included in AmigaOS3.9, which will be onsale in 3 weeks time. I would have hoped that WarpOS5 would be tested (Obvioulsy isn't) and that the Master would be in the hands of the CD duplication service by now. Looks like untested Beta software will also be included along with the Aminet collection they are going to sell :)

In reply to Comment 4 (Francois Prowse):
WarpUP V5 *is* tested. I and several other programmers got the Beta Version
already *weeks* ago and there were absolutely no problems anymore with it since
quite a long time (at the start there was a bug, but after I reported it, Sam
fixed it after a few days)

OK - fair enough....however comments like "Might have dissapeared" give me lots of confidence :)
BTW: are any of you guys going the the WOA show?

In reply to Comment 5 (Steffen Haeuser):
The FACT remains, this is a *BETA* release, at a time when the final release shoudl already be in the hands of those making the OS3.9 CDs.
This does NOT bode well - OS3.9 is being released with BETA software, instead of a full release - BAD.
BTW, the link doesn't work - maybe H&P removed the beta release already?

I don't see why people are complaining. After all this is a PPC core kernel we're
talking about, not a multi-function commodity program. Correct me if I'm wrong,
but isn't the point of WarpUp to provide a fast and stable foundation for PPC
software? What features do you think should be added? The only complaint I have
is that the link is broken...

In reply to Comment 7 (Anonymous):
*No!* This has been through a very extensive Beta testing, basically probably nearly every PPC
program has been tested with it (a few people did really a lot of tests,
over the past weeks), that there is another round of testing just means they
are *careful*. Maybe it should not have been named "Beta", but
"WarpUP V5 Release Candidate One". But it pays if you are careful with
updating a KERNEL, this always should be tested extensively, better more
testing instead of less testing...

Er, why would you want to run FastQuake5, under emulation or
otherwise, when any other Quake PPC port on Aminet is better....

I was just hoping the emulation would finally work with ImageFX's PowerStation modules.
No such luck...yet.

You must not have a 5 channel surround and 16bit audio card for your Amiga. Just the ability to run down the huge corridors and get a good idea where that lurking knight is or the fiend that's coming up from behind. Combine Quake with a couple of good soundtrack songe from the Armageddon soundtrack and man... it's a whole new game! Other than that, QuakeWOS is second best but FastQuake5 is still faster. @50% screensize 320x240 FastQuake5=19 seconds 49.73fps QuakeWOS=26.1 seconds 37.7fps. You make the call on that one. Generally I play it in 640x480@80%. The only reason why I like QuakeWOS is that it supports my joystick (PSXPort). Oh yeah, I did not touch FastQuake5 until there was a legal port of QuakePPC to the Aminet. There were hundreds of times that I wanted to anyway though, but I still refrained.
Other than that, awesome work on the latest updates of the kernal.

Don't forget that QuakeWOS is extremely slow when playing over network. qwclwos is fine, though.

In reply to Comment 14 (Mark Olsen):
That would be all well and good but, I'm not running QuakeWOS on a network and QuakeWOS is just as fast as the QW executables when not on a network. Also, I've tested the QW extensively and found that there is no speed differences with just two players on the network but when you get into three you'll see about 2 or 3 fps drop incrementally worse for each number above three you add to the servers. One thing that I would like to see though, is how fast FastQuake5 is on the Voodoo3 or the CyberVisionPPC board.

In reply to Comment 15 (the man in the shadows):
If you have VooDoo 3 then it is stupid to even run those software rendering versions of Quake. The onlything that makes sense then is to run GLQuake. It looks so much better and is so much faster in high resolutions then software rendering versions. Just test that on a PC and you will know that.

You're right, I don't. I do however own several mission packs and
add-ons, and FastQuake5 is based on an old version of Quake that
only runs the original Quake properly, and none of the expansions
(either commercial or freeware). I use WarpQuake, running 480x360
full screen (no 3D card here), and it generally gets 25fps or more,
plus it works well when playing on the internet.
