So does anyone who's bought it actually have an opinion about it? From what I can see it's just 3.5 with a dockbar, and a bunch of shareware programs chucked in, but maybe I'm just a pessimist.
Are the listers any different at all or are they still mono colored, sluggish and unfriendly things? Any competition against a well configured Magellan II?
My mouse pointer is hovering over the 'buy' button, but I'm still not convinced.

I can say this. A well configured Magellan II with OS3.5 is no comparison to a well configured Magellan II with OS3.1. I have 3.5 as well as Magellan II and won't turn back.
There are some features of 3.9 that are a must have that were not present in 3.5 and that you can't just download off of the Aminet. Outside of just Aminet enhancements, there are quite a few things that are welcomed in the release of 3.9. I'm sure that "XAD" (archiver) could be implemented into Magellan II in some way shape or form to enhance on the already powerful ArcDir. Not to mention that but the buggy form of IPrefs from 3.1 (or fastiprefs for that matter) are a far cry from that of 3.5 but with the addition of the new features in the 3.9 version, that's worth ten of my hard earned quid right there.
All in all, the fact that H&P have found some way to run the installer without OS3.1 already installed and install 3.9 from scratch off of a CD. Also, it seems aparent that the CacheCDFS might support booting from CD now so you could just pop the disc in the drive (automount boards I'm assuming) to recover the system.
yeah, there are some nice features of 3.9 that could be hard to live without.

I use OS3.5 + Magellan II. I like it, I'd never want to go back from Mag2! Some of the features sound nice in OS3.9 and I think worth it to show the support we alledge the platform has.. ;-)
What nobody has answered in all these threads yet, is *are the shareware utils (XAD, etc) REGISTERED?* Or do we then all have to go out and pay the actual authors as well as H&P?

I also have 3.5 with Magellan 2, and whilst i can't imagine not using my magellan 2, i must admit, 3.9 is looking quite good, and will provide me with the functionality i use in Magellan 2. I am thinking the only thing i will miss from magellan 2 if i choose not to install it is the double click to bring up a lister. Also, all those shareware things in the 3.9 distribution do not need to be payed extra for, they have licensed these things, so it is not necessary. The only thing that is not full is AWEB3.4SE, which has a few limitations.

That one is a particularly nice feature, I agree. But I still can't get on with the "show filenames" mode of WB, and I'd miss the filetyping and drag-n-drop stuff of Opus. Occasionally I have to drop back to WB and I then experience how much better the MagII environment is. :)
Still, there's nothing in the OS3.9 feature list that implies it wouldn't work ok with MagII just as OS3.5 does now. I'll probably buy it.

That's the only feature that's setup on Magellan that I remove instantly. You should have seen the look on my face when I was casually customizing in the environment and clickin away on the desktop... low and behole I had around 45 windows open up that I didn't want or need. The only other thing that I hate about that, if I double click, then it needs to be up where I want it (pre-determined locked position) and not open recursively for additional double clicks that I do.
