Great! - The demo of this on the Amiga Active cover disk was excellent. I'll
be buying this at the show if its available.

Well, I can't even get the demo to work, It doesn't want to work with
my Voodoo3 saying that it can't find the screenmode(!).
I hope they have fixed this.

Congratulations. You've bought usupported piece of hardware crap.
Btw. I'm an emploee of Topware, and I feel good when I see some good games ported. Waiting for 2150 & Moon Project :).

Will it ever end?
FACT: Voodoo3 hardware is supported by Elbox in the Mediator boards.
FACT: Voodoo3 on the Mediator is better than anything else that the Amiga has out there at this point.
sorry if I sound heated, I just don't want this ending up being another H&P VS. Ralph Schmidt (which is how it is turning out) type of thing.

Correction..the best thing the 1200 has.
Right now even the BV is better than the Voodoo as it has 3D drivers ;-)
And I believe the CVPPC outperforms the Voodoo3 as it stands in 2D
But lets not let facts get in the way eh?

How about the fact that Voodoo 3 only can do 16-bit 3D graphics ?
The Permedia2 can do 32-bit 3D without problems.

In reply to Comment 6 (JKD):
If you know anything about the Permidia2 chip, then you would know that the chip was originally designed to be used in 2D applications with AutoCAD. Gee, I wonder why it performs a bit faster in 2D? Where as the Voodoo3 board was originally designed specifically with 3D game play in mind. Also, the Permidia2 chip was released as a competitor to other boards like the Oxygen12 board. The one draw back of the chip that made the Oxygen boards stand out was the fill rate (fill rate being a bit more specific to some 3D applications).
Let's wait and see what Elbox has for those users out there with the Mediator/Voodoo boards. I still say that the Voodoo3 is better than the BVPPC (comparing 1200 with 1200, not 1200 with 3K/4K).

If you can give examples of 16bit versus 24bit and show people where the banding is in the 16bit 30fps displays, then there must be something that you are seeing that I can not. A good example if you will, load a 24bit image into a 24bit image manipulation (ImageFX is a good one) program and do a tally of the number of colours, I would be suprised if it is more than 2000 over 65K. Many gaming review companies believe that anything more than 16bit is wasted space anyway. Here's another good test, load up that copy of Quake (not GL) that some might have and check to see if it is 8bit or 16bit. Want an easy way to tell? If it's from clickboom, then it's 16bit.

32bit 3D on the Permidia. Yeah, I'll bet that game of Heretic II looks quite stunning at 640x480 in 32bit. I'd be interested to know what the frame rate is.

In some places, it might be difficult to tell the differences. But with bilinear filtering of textures, it shows. Try enabling fog, then it looks extremely ugly in 16-bit.

I didn't say that the Permedia2 performed better than the Voodoo, I just showed that Voodoo is baaaad.
Funny to see that the Voodoo5 needs 4 GPU's to get half the speed of a GeForce2 with one GPU, 3DFX really are the 3D-chipmakers Intel.
BTW, the Permedia2 performance doesn't drop noticeable when going for 16- to 32-bit

I just really have to wonder why people are waiting for anything nVidia on the Amiga. Yeah, the nVidia group really know what they are doing especially when it comes to the NV10 chip, but they "are so tight, you could shove a lump of coal up their a$$ and in a week have a diamond" (good movie) when it comes to providing developer documentation. If you are not developing for Windows within their own little clique, they tell you to bugger off. If you don't believe me, send an email over to dev@nvidia.com and let them know that you would like the developer documentation on all of their PCI based boards for use with an Amiga. Then do the same with 3Dfx and see what type of response you get.
From a developers standpoint, I'd back 3Dfx any day of the week.

My thoughts exactly---There aren't 3d drivers out for the V3,so how can anyone make a fair comparison. I own both an old Permedia 2 based video card, and a V3 2000 for my PC---the V3 kills the Permedia 2 in 3d performance.Someone mentioned this above, but the Permedia 2 was really intended for the rendering market, not the 3d games market. So,wait for the Warp3d drivers.

It's not "hardware crap". It's the software that is the problem. The
Voodoo3 is faster than all other Amiga GFX cards to date, or at least
it has the potential to be. The Voodoo3 Drivers were rushed, but now
version 1.1 is out and it is a *lot* quicker than anything I have seen
before on any Amiga, and they will continue to be updated.
To everyone else:
Sorry to stir this up. I wish I never posted the bloody message now.
Richard.

Permedia 32-bit! Right, absolutely pointless with a crap fill rate. And by the way, can you notice the difference between 16-bit or 32-bit? I don't. Unless your one of those idiots who looks at a wall trying to count pixels or see how the color flow is.
VooDoo 3 or 4( G-Rex, isn't it great or what) is much better than Permedia 2 but let's give them time to develop the drivers. We are talking about new technology here for the classic Amiga. It is a learning experience.
I do hope that there will also be hardware acceleration for the G-Rex VooDoo drivers. Could give a good boost.

>Well, I can't even get the demo to work, It doesn't want to work with

I don't know, but I guess it's because the voodoo driver only
support little endian (intel) pixel format. You can check this in
every p96 screenmode requester: if you only have 640x480x16PC and not
640x480x16, that's the problem. I doubt that voodoo3 itself doesn't
support big endian pixelmode, when almost all other cards do, so if
the intel pixel mode is the case, it's probably caused by a still
incomplete elbox p96 driver...
I guess it'll slow down a lot of other things too then...
>I hope they have fixed this.
well... it works with every more or less recent major graphics card
out there (at least cv64, cv64/3d, pii, spectrum, piv, bvppc, cvppc) -
it's difficult to "fix" something for some still incomplete driver
which was barely out at the time of mastering...:)
it CAN be fixed though (by doing the conversion on the fly), if it's
the voodoo and not the drivers fault, but it will slow down the
game...

Not for this kind of 2D games, where bus speed is everything, and the
mediater isn't particulary fast, at least not coupled with a bppc...
actually the game is roughly twice as fast on a csppc/cvpcc than on a
bppc/bvppc at the same clock, probably mostly because of the 64 bit
design and the faster cvppc bus.

In reply to Comment 21 (Henrik Münther / Pagan Games):
Great job on the game though, it's extremely fast and playable in 800x600 on the PIV ZIII with a CSPPC. Consider it purchased. Earth 2140 is everything that Napalm could have been. Now we just need something on the Amiga like Warzone 2100 which is similar to this game but with a fairly extensive 3D engine.

In reply to Comment 24 (Mark Olsen):
First of all, I didn't reply to any comment and second, yes( for the price we have to pay) it's a waste.
I have a BVision and running a 3D game in lower resolution gives more FPS. This simply means the fill rate is crap because if there was enough it would also have this FPS in 1024x768. That's how 3D works. The Permedia also doesn't have important functions that now have to be emulated while they should be in hardware.
On the PC the Permedia 2 never stood a chance because after releasing the bloody thing it was immediatly fit for the scrap heap again. The complete PC world negative about this thing.

Well i have both HereticII and Permedia II I bet that Voodoo 3 plays a hell lot faster
than the P2 ever dreamed of doing...
But any way, P2 renders really nicely, i mean, it makes the gfx looks really nice.
but no matter what I would rather play at 60 fps (?) than 12 :-)
But any way, this is just a bit off topic... I am really looking forward to Earth 2140..
I am going to buy it.. hae no girlfriend any more to spend money on.. so just spend them on
my miggy :-)

Bad luck for me here...
The P96 voodoo3 driver supports only 16bit PC modes :(
So i'm not a customer yet.
My BVision is now outsite my tower and i never put it back in again, it even slowed down my voodoo3 :(
