The recently quiet Open Amiga Foundation have set up a transition plan in order to keep the effort going. Steve Crietzman writes: "Following threats and intimidation from corporate bodies, I have decided that the effort involved in maintaining Open Amiga and the high degree of politics involved were becoming too much, and so for the last few months I have taken an extended break from Open Amiga and the Amiga community. My biggest regret in taking this action was that I simply just left, without explanation or with plans in place to allow for a transitional governing council to take over from where I left off. To correct this, we are now looking for candidates to form a transitional governing council for the Open Amiga Foundation." Read more here.

I didn't realise that the "Campaign for a Free Meal" was still alive and kicking. Now I can sleep easy at night. Anyone know why a company would want to open source a product they're still developing and selling?

Still developing. Hah! That's only if 50,000 orders of 3.9 get done.

"Threats and intimidation"? Huh? Is he serious?! This seems rather weird.
Regional councils, etc. seems probably not necessary. The whole point of Open Source Foundation should be to make the source code of OS3.9 publicly available on the Internet. If that is done, it has fulfilled its mission. If it is not done, then the whole organization is pointless.
Perhaps H&P will agree to release the source code of OS3.9 if they don't develop OS4.0?

In reply to Comment 3 (J. Jacobs):
If development isn't continued beyond 3.9 then the source should be made
publicly available or licensed to someone that will further development.
But the question now, it how much further do you go? AmigaDE is the
next stage. It's like the mac ppc / 68k situation. Bring everyone over
to DE and slowly phase out the classic line.
Perhaps OS4 should be AmigaDE running on classic hardware with a solid
emulation package to manage old software.
I don't think that maintaining two diverging lines is necessarily a
good thing for Amiga.
For the classic line to get a boost, we'd need a new motherboard design.
The BoXeR is going in that direction but may never see the light of day.
I think any new design would have to some backwards support for ZORRO
and CPU slots to attract more people with investments in peripherals.
It'd have to be less expensive. The proposed BoXeR is too slow and
doesn't address the level of expansion support to make it worthwhile
for me to consider.
I can just get an AmigaOne add-on board instead or G-Rex, etc.
Anyway, I ramble on too much so I'll leave it here.

In reply to Comment 4 (jaeson koszarsky):
The Boxer would still have some benefits if it could be brought to market quickly, and without costing a fortune. The fact that it is an all new board (you don't have that with the other solutions Mediator/GRex/Etc.) This adds the element of reliability to your system, as you are no longer adding onto a 10 year old motherboard which could die on you at anytime. I wish this were the case, but it has been so long in the making, I feel quite sure it will never come to completion.
