Realsoft and Hyperion Entertainment team up to bring Realsoft 3D to the Amiga.
Cologne, December 9, 2000.

Realsoft and Hyperion Entertainment have entered into an agreement to bring Realsoft’s critically acclaimed and highly advanced 3D modelling and rendering package to the Amiga. 'Realsoft 3D' is a full featured modelling, rendering, animation and simulation software tool. Its predecessor, Real 3D, originated on the Amiga all these years ago and was renowned for its powerful and innovative tools. Now the new, rewritten 'Realsoft 3D' provides even more power and introduces dozens of exciting innovations, all accessible through a very carefully designed, intelligent, and user-friendly interface. This new interface adapts to the skills of the user and helps him/her to master advanced 3D techniques with surprising ease. Realsoft 3D is designed to meet the requirements of today's 3D artist who requires extreme performance through an easy to use, productive user interface.

Commenting on the agreement, Realsoft’s managing director Vesa Meskanen remarked: "The success of our 3D product line started on the Amiga platform. This opportunity to port our latest product generation back to Amiga is therefore very welcome. The platform independent design of Realsoft 3D together with Hyperion Entertainment's knowledge about the latest developments of Amiga OS entails that after the initial porting work is done, all our new software releases will include the Amiga platform without further porting delays."
“We were extremely impressed by the feature-set of Realsoft 3D. This package truly represents unbelievable value for money”, said Ben Hermans, managing partner of Hyperion Entertainment. “Through our activities in the field of entertainment software, we have acquired enormous expertise in the field of 3D graphics. We were looking for a way to leverage this expertise and apply it to other areas. Given Realsoft’s Amiga background, it seemed natural to approach them. We are very excited that we can play a role in bringing back Real 3D’s successor to the Amiga.”

Realsoft 3D will be available for Amiga OS 3.x and Amiga DE in the course of 2001. Requirements and further details to be announced.

Real3D is a welcome. But I honestly think that if Amiga er...hyperion...want to think big....and make big profits. They should get Maya(alias/wavefront) and Softimage on the AmigaDE.
THEN....companies out there will start to notice us. Perhaps we could see Adobe products coming into our picture as well.
I mean c'mon....Maya is now available for Linux. I didn't think that would happen. If Alias/wavefront can port that software to Linux, they can do that for Amiga as well.
holding my breath....

Jer,
I'd be happy just to get LW 6! It's not quite in the same class as Softimage
or Maya, but you gotta walk before you can run. As I said in the unmoderated
section, Cinema 4D would be welcome as well. Geez, there was a time when the
Amiga had just about all the best 3D apps.

just click and go. wow...now AmigaDe can run windows apps! heh...if we could run every OS's software out there. We could become kings.
yeah....I'll believe that will happen.

Realsoft have always said that they would accomodate the idea of an amiga version, and it is good to see they have gotten into agreement with Hyperion to port it to the DE. The feature list of readsoft 3D is very impressive, especially for the price of the PC version. The DE needs a good 3D renderer, as a lot of amigas were sold for graphics use.
Best of luck to the team, and I look forward to seeing it.

This is major news in my book. I remember not so long ago when I bought my Amiga 500 becuase it gave me access to state of the art graphics abilities at an affordable price. We may not be seeing something as revolutoinary as Dpaint II on an A500 here, but we have to start somewhere. The news that some major graphics software is coming back to Amiga is to be celebrated. If there is one selling point that can guarantee AmigaOne instant success, it is for the role that originally put Amiga on the map.
Hopefully, the market may expand enough for other companies to dip a toe into the AmigaOne market. The Amiga's graphical capabilities were sufficient eleven years ago for me to buy one, and maybe soon I will do again.

Real3D is my favourite 3D package for AMIGA! It's better than LW!.. ;)
Realsoft Graphics Oy is 3D grapics/animation guru!
With new RealSoft 4D really better than Maya or Softimage!
I hope for this efforts! Hope look soon this stuff for New aMiGa!
P.S. RealSoft will lead and replace LW for AMIGA video/graphics!

For one thing, that would be a bit redundant. Let's run a layer on top of a layer to emulate another layer in which the software will already run?
Does that make any sense?
What would be good to see is to put out the well known 3D applications and show what you can do with them when they run on just about anything. Big name companies out there will see the overwhelming competition. It doesn't have to be the best, it just has to be out there and widely available. Who else uses that philosophy anyway...

People complaining that it's not Maya or LightWave have not used Realsoft 3D V4.
It's only been out for a short while and the feature-set is absolutely amazing, on par with any other package out there on the PC.
Except that it is substantially cheaper.
Don't take my word for it:
http://interneteye3d.com/Reviews2000/Oct/RealSoft3d4/default.asp
Ben Vost, former editor of Amiga Format, also did a rave review of it for 3D World.
As a final note, Realsoft 3D V4 will also be available for the Classic.
(Oh and by the way, a port of WINE for Amiga DE? You obviously don't know how WINE works. It requires an x86 machine.)

The program you are referring to is actually a movie maker/animation program which is indeed based on the LithTech engine. However, this is for realtime movies, not for rendering, and the quality of the output will be accordingly. There's no way that any 3D engine can reach the quality of a rendering package at the moment, just look at the example screenshots at realsoft's web page.

I'm really pleased to hear some serious software coming back to the Amiga. Of all the packages available in the past, Real3D2 was one of the most impressive for features and quality of output.
Unfortunately, it also had one of the most unusable interfaces ever.. :-)
What I'm worries me, though, is that a port of a PC package will be unusably slow (interface and rendering) compared to, say, Cinema4D4, and also, whilst the current market may support a couple of thousand sales of a £30 game, how many people will realistically pay £500 for a package they could get for the higher-performing (huh!) PC.
Can Hyperion comment on these issues, please?

OK, on to something more technical:
What would the system requirements for the classic version be? I'd imagine, you could do with no less than a PPC and a truckload of RAM.
On the other hand, it would be pretty cool to sit in the train simulating advanced physical systems on an ARM based palmtop running AmigaDE!
Then it would truly be: Only Amiga Makes it Possible... :-)

1. Most Amiga users should have a truckload of ram by now. How is it possible to NOT have loads of ram when the machine is years and years old? Ram is the most common expansion.
2. Real3D has a great interface - especially v3.x - I never got the grips with the Imagine/Lightwave/Alladin etc interfaces. Real3D 1.4 had the best interface IMO, and Real3D has only continued in the tradidion.
3. I don't think Realsoft will require PPC, but rendering on 68k might be slow. Better get the AmigaOne card/expansion then ;o) Perhaps Shark? One thing is for certain - I'm not buying a two/three year old PPC expansion card from a dead company.
HURRAH!!!! Real3D4/Realsoft for AmigaOS!!! I'm waiting to paint them textures on!

This is great news!!!!!!!!(-: This is one area on the New Amiga DE that I was worried about. This will be a package that I will buy and will be my primary focus for the new Amiga DE. Just think, rendering on a pda, how cool can that be, or perhaps you could design objects on your cell phone then send your objects you design through the air to your buddies. Make a phone call, send an object. This really is cool. Now if we could convience NewTek to get off thier buts and start porting Lightwave 6.5 to DE(-:

I don't want to burst anybody's bubble but rendering on a PDA?
Some of you people should stop dreaming.
I see complaints about "slow" PPC accelerators we are currently using.
This is then followed by people saying they will run Realsoft 3D on a PDA.
Can anybody please tell me of any PDA that is capable of the same FPU performance as a 604e@233 Mhz?
Or a PDA that has enough memory in it to comfortably run a rendering package?
We suspect an 060 with a decent 3D accelerator (Permedia 2, Voodoo 3) will be able to run Realsoft 3D V4 quite decently.

In reply to Comment 22 (Ben Hermans/Hyperion):
Heh! I was joking, don't be mad. :-)
The reason I posted that was because now we might start to see programs for other platforms than your regular desktop, which do things you'd only consider belonging on desktops. It's a side effect of the portability of the AmigaDE. Of course you can't render hires raytraced animations or run software packages that require tonnes of RAM on your average cell-phone! And it shouldn't be used for that, only simple things.
But I wouldn't mind seeing a rudimentary 3D-engine of some kind for data-visualization on PDA's, which scales to the power of the machine and the needs of the user, sort of a scalable OpenGL.
Advanced engineering software for electronic measurement, wouldn't necessarily require a desktop PC (or a laptop). You could switch to a small collector device if that suits you better. But you're still fully compatible with your desktop PC. Or perhaps a hardware diagnostic tool extension for your Palm which wirelessly transfers data to your desktop via Bluetooth in realtime. Hmmmm, I may be getting too far off topic here...

Well, to quote Ben Yoris,
<I don't remember having read about them on the Amiga Website (maybe I'm wrong, <please tell me).
<And as Bill said "if it's not on the Amiga Website..."

hmmmmm.... Realsoft 3D on Amiga. I`m not sure whether this is good or bad. Its a good package, but I`m not jumping up and down with excitment here. It certainly isn`t on the same par with LightWave [6] in terms of ease of use and profile. In the games industry I use MAX, LightWave and Maya on a daily basis, and would far prefer to see LightWave (or even Maya) ported to Amiga. (MAX sucks :-p)
Realsoft 3D is certainly a powerful package, but it isn`t going to have people switching from pc/mac setups to AmigaDE.
btw, 3D World, while a very good mag, is to scared to give out proper scores on any 3d package. All high-end 3D packages so far reviewed have all received scores of 4.5 out of 5!

We are bringing back one of the packages that defined the Amiga experience and is on par, no matter what you say, with the best of them on the PC.
Sure, it doesn't have the same "visibility" than Maya but its tons and tons cheaper than Maya.
Moreover, since when do we on the Amiga care more about visibility than content and power here on the Amiga?
Why are you even still using an Amiga if you care about visibility?
It's not like the platform is very visibile.

As to speed, I am pretty confident that you will find it performs quite well with Warp3D support and PPC code.

"...if this is good or bad"? It *is* a new, professional-level rendering package for the Amiga. I don't now what could be bad about this.
Concerning Maya or MAX, they are beyond the price range of any Amiga users. Last time I checked Maya NT was at 70000 german marks (that's $35000).
We're not in a position yet to attract people from other platforms. We are trying to stay alive, and keep Amiga users with their platform.
I'm sure you won't find any other package at that price that offers anything close to Realsoft 4D, not even Lightwave. It even has a footstep animation system, things you have to buy extra for MAX or Lightwave!
So believe me, this *is* good news :-)

Well, I just tried the 18 MB demoversion for Windows and it looks great. New interface, while retaining some of the things I remember from Real3DV2. The interface is cramped on an 800x600 screen with way too small editing views, but just about anything is cramped in Windows less than 1024x768 anyway...
It's fairly speedy and generates excellent images from what I tested. The editor is very impressive and has tonnes of tools to manipulate objects in just about any way you want. That also means there are hundreds of buttons and menu entries, so you don't get into all corners within the first 5 minutes, I tell you. It crashed two times within 1 hour though, don't know why, but I read a couple of reviews and they also observed low stability. The program is undergoing constant updates, so this could be temporary.
One ingenious feature is the compass. I really like it! It should be implemented in the AmigaDE as a basic manouvering mechanism! ;-)
The way you edit the configuration of the user interface is also just brilliant, and should be used in more programs.
It has a 9 MB HTML-manual and you can use everything, except save your projects, so you can learn to use it inside out, so you'll be prepared for the AmigaDE version. So download it! It'll give you loads of fun...

Techy question: On one of the example pics (the impossible screwdriver) there appears to be some "lens glow" (not flare) coming off the specular highlights. Is this a faked effect (extra lightsource, postprocessing, etc) or a built-in feature? I have always felt an automatic-"glare" function would be good in such a package!
2nd question: According to the licence, the price buys the code for any/all platforms, except 3rd party ports. Can we assume this port has to therefore be paid for separately to a Windows one? Will there be a cross-grade offer in either direction, for those wishing to share data Amiga <-> PC?

From what I can see, the following are post-processed into the image:
Depth of Field
Edge Filter
Negative
Star Filter
I think lens effects are also post-processed, but they are related to camera attributes instead of rendering attributes.
Just as a side note, cross platform network rendering is possible, so if you have a Linux render farm, you can just connect your AmigaDE machine to those and enjoy super rendering speeds. :-)

The higher layers of the program which are platform independent will be compiled by Realsoft itself using an Amiga system provided by Hyperion Entertainment.
This allows Realsoft to keep the development of the Amiga version in line with the development on other platforms.

""I'm not sure this is good or bad"? What kind of an idiotic comment is that?"
Its good that a new 3D package will be available for Amiga. Its bad that is not going to encourage 3D users from other platforms to change to Amiga. At the moment there is no professional 3D graphic software available for Amiga (with the exception of LW5). Without one of the "Big Three" packages available, there will be no reason for other platform artists to use Amiga technology instead of win/mac/linux. They will want Maya, MAX or LW.
"We are bringing back one of the packages that defined the Amiga experience and is on par, no matter what you say, with the best of them on the PC."
RealSoft 3D is undoubtably a very powerful package, but it is not used by the industry. I had to buy a pc several years ago so that I could continue to use LightWave 3D. I use my Amiga for everything else - 2D work, internet, games, etc. The pc is only used for 3D work.
I have been an Amiga owner since 1985 (I have 6 Amigas, all still used), and I have used every Amiga 3D package there is available. I have been working professionally in the games industry for 5 years now, and they favour MAX, Maya or LightWave. Its great that a new 3D package is going to be ported to the Amiga, but you have to understand that it won`t get all of us ex-Amiga LightWave users excited.
I seriously doubt that RealSoft 3D has all of the features that a games delveloper needs. (open SDK, open file formats, customisable plug-ins, node and scene graphs, efficient UVW mapping, LOD, DeepPaint 3D support... etc)
I going to buy the new Amiga as soon as those boards are available from Eyetech, but I`m not going to dump LW in preference to RealSoft 3D.
The reason that Maya, MAX and LightWave cost in the regions of thousands of pounds is because they are the top pieces of software in their class, tailered for use in the game and film industry over a period of many years. RealSoft 3D can claim heritage back to the Amiga days, but it`s still unproven.
If the Amiga is going to survive in its new incarnation, then it has to have high visability. We need to have Amiga versions of the most popular packages on other platforms, as well as new Amiga-only software. I don`t just mean 3D packages here, but programs like Photoshop, Netscape, Quake III etc. People are going to want to use software available from other platforms on the new Amiga. Having a better OS is not enough - 90% of users don`t understand the differences in the OS anyway.
Don`t get me wrong. I want the new Amiga to be successful more than anything, (and the port of RealSoft 3D is a step in the right direction) but the rest of the world (especially the professional sectors) won`t give two hoots about it unless we have some killer high-end apps available that are compatible with the software that they already run.

Photoshop, Lightwave, etcetc. YEAH! Let's keep the monopolists in power!!!
This is the sad mentality of the ppl. Surpressing all others. I know why I'm on Amiga - it is because it is not the mainstream sheep.
But I realize that we have to seel our moral code to hell if we want to survive. Ahh. To hell with it. Let's all die, and we've been people of respect!!!!

Why not just continue Windows!?:
-
* We get Fasttracker over to AmigaDE to support XMs
* We get MS Word on AmigaDE - for compatability
* We put the start-menu on AmigaDE to have a familiar GUI (and win borders)
* We port Lightwave, MAJA, and the lot
* Photoshop
Wow - we've got Windows on Amiga! Then we can get many new users! Damn, this is smart!

Okay, so you didn't even bother to check the feature list?
So basically you don't know what you are talking about?
How hard is it to check the Realsoft website? It even has a link to download the SDK on it's mainpage.
You'll moreover see that most if not all of these issues are addressed.
http://www.realsoft.fi/productinfo/contents.html
And I find this whole argument "we need this and this package to be taken seriously" a total fallacy.
These other packages also started from scratch at a given point and were able to get users based on their feature-set and power.
Why wouldn't Realsoft 3D V4 which is very much cheaper and offers most if not all of the "required" features not be able to do so?
Your worldview is static and assumes a status quo where everything will remain the way it is.
That's the biggest mistake you can make in the IT industry. Just ask 3DFX.
