Anyone in business knows that getting things done can be really difficult and can take ages longer than you expect.
Merlancia deserve support not bad criticism.
For instance there is a shortage of LCD colour screens. It can't be helped if there is a hold up with products containing these screens.
Just support and wait and see, we don't know what's going on behind the scenes.
You might have noticed I'm now at storeshop.com, also not vapor, stock bought and waiting - got defrauded by a developer and lost most of this year :( |

For the record:
AI *DID* announce that they had signed the requisite contracts with Merlancia a while back.
Reasonably authoritative word is that Ryan and Merlancia have the funding necessary to create this line of HW.
Now, I completely understand that it is very easy for Amigans to believe that every announcement is a vapor announcement, since, as Georges Santayana said, "Those that forget the lessons of history are condemned to repeat them".
But, as Siggy Freud said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar".

So now in Amiga market we have some power developers that can produce microchips.
These people will be in direct concurrence with 3DFX and NVIDIA with their custom chip (MI95816V67S166 166MHz Custom MPU.MPU with Video and Mains processor integrated into one component)(!!!!!!!!) that surely will furnish high performances. :-DDD It's very strange that they will be able to complete in so little time something harder to project than a 'simple' work like Boxer(3 years of development not finished),all Pios/Metabox projects,etc....and overall the economic force to arrive to complete and sell them.
But i'm here.
If they'll be able to do it i'll reknow their geniality,but i have only any 'little' doubts for now. |

Their claim was to be Amiga DE compatable. This is not the same as being an Amiga
One.
Boxer's problems have been based on the difficulty in making off the shelf hardware
totally Amiga compatable, a much more difficult task than is facing Merlancia.
The hardware in the Hurricane is already suited to running the Amiga DE becase it
is similar in nature to the equipment that Amiga is using for Demo purposes.
Merlancia has had a long term relationship with Amiga, and providing the DE is ready
should be able to deliver on this product.

What exactly is an MI95816V67S166 anyway? On what core is it based? What do all the numbers mean?
(My personal opinion: MI95816 seems a lot like 65816, and V67 seems a lot like VIC-II 6567. Is this an FPGA-based high-speed implementation and integration of Commodore 64 chips, running at 166MHz?)
Using the PPC for the main processor, and the MI1234567890ABCDEFG as an I/O subsystem seems like a reasonable design, if it can be done. I can't wait to see Ryan's booth at the next St. Louis Amiga Expo. Yes, I know it's supposed to be called "Gateway" because St. Louis is the "Gateway to the West," and the Gateway Arch and all, but I can't get away from associating Gateway with Gateway2000. |

The device is not a laptop. It is an UltraLite(TM) system, a cross between a laptop and a Palm type system. (Compare PSION Series 7.) NVRAM is the way to go for such a device. Clip on modules will be made eventually with a Hard Disc and a DVD drive. yes, we plan to have it play DVD Video Disvcs in the future as well. The major problem in production time is the LCD display. We definately want an 800x600 true colour screen, however, we might have to do a run with 640x480 screens (Hurricane LC) as the 800x600 screens have acvailablity problems. THere is also video out, whcih is not mentioned. We plan to hhave glasses for the system in the future as well, with much better display size (1600x1200x24). The glasses will be like most 3-D headsets, thought they will be lighter, and more effective. They will be based off of a new type of LCD that is only about 1x1.5 inches in size, at 1600x1200 pixels! (it is too bad that there is not a 7" version of it available to us...) The eClips system, which will be released either shortly after, or in worse case, slightle before the Hurricane will be a Palm stlyle system, at a price rande of about $700 or so. Both systems will have a game pad built in, and flash cards with games will be released for them.
The basic concept here is that the systems will be virtually un-destructable. Look forward to adverts in AmigActive Magazoine in the next couple months, and a LW render of the device at an upcoming Amiga conference. We are targeting to have a finished product available by the April hsow, and we hope to have some fully working prototypes ready by late February. Until then, only time will tell.
What we do not want to do is pull a "BoXeR" and show an unfinished circuit board. That, in my opinion, proves absolutely nothing. If we can't show a working model, then we will show nothing. As far as pictures of the unit, expect to see them in an upcoming issue of AmigActive as well. We have promised them the exclusive on the first images of the unit.
As far as the core and other details of the MI9XXXX series components, we are not specifying it at this time. We will say that it will be a 32 bit capable core, and it can be put to a number of uses, including being used as the main processor, taking control of the entire unit. We will also be designing some lesser expensive ($100 to $500) devices based around that component alone. The final product is *not* an FPGA, but rather a Silicon-Graphite semi-conductor in a PLCC package. We have contacts with several companies, including the formidable MicroMech who makes the equipment that TI uses in it's founderies.
Please understand one more thing: The specs on the HC page are not 100% final. We do not plan to remove anything, but we are looking at some other nice features that will improve the sellpoint, and we have several on our internal investors/developers datasheets that we will not reveal yet. Just trust me, they are very nice.
In addition, I would like to add that we are always looking for firmware writers, and hardware designers. We are currently looking fo a firmware writer for the Hurricane. Anyone with a good base of knowlege in firmware, and hopefully soem PowerPC background is welcomed to e-mail. Please have at least some background in writing firmware before you apply, and please be serious about it. If you want to see a timely release, then please don't waste our time by applying for positions that you cannot fill.
For those that are interested, the release of the TORRO Systems will be in an order like this, nut maybe a little different.

We have other products in mind currently asa well, both next gen products, and procucts for the current Amiga line of systems. (I hesitate to say "classic". I don't believe there is anything too dated about a PPC based A4000T, if only there were a PPC AmigaOS...oh yes...please buy AmigaOS 3.9...buy two if you have to...for those of us tthat want to see 4.0 anyway...). Keep a watch on us over the next few months...you might be a bit suprised to find out how serious we are...
In closing, I would like to wish the entire Amiga community a happy winter holiday season. I hope to see as many of you as possible at the April St. Louis show (Amiga 2001) and I would like to encourage dealers and developers to attend, whether or not they are exhibiting, so that we might make the APA meeting before the show a huge success. BTW when will we see instuctions on running Amiga DE on the Dreamcast, have been dying to catch that post on www.dccopyworld.com for a long time now...
