Bruce Taylor writes: Rocklyte Systems, which ANN reported as working on an Amiga GUI system earlier in the year has completed a preview of the Linux based OS. Interested users can download it from here. Features include support for draggable screens, directory assigns and a 'familiar looking file manager' is included. There's even a Windows based environment for Microsoft junkies.

Omega? Indeed! At least they openly state it's based on Amiga's Workbench - and it really does look good. They need to call it "Workbench 3.4 for Linux" though.

I don't want to be remembered as the chap who's always negative though, but even though it loogs like home, it doesn't look like anything in comparizon to my WB, and alot of other Amiga users, I'm sure.

If I recall correctly thats what Apple vs. Microsoft was all about. You can't protect the look and feel of an OS.

I remember that the AROS people *did* have problems with copyright on a certain item: The menu system (The fact that they are hidden until you use them). They were asked to alter the design by Amiga Inc.

That's not a copyright issue - it`s a patent issue. One of the Amiga patents
covers menus which drop from the top of the screen and are hidden until the
right mouse button is pressed. I can't remember the exact wording, but (like
most software patents) it's pretty specific and utterly rediculous anyway..

I still question how intigrated the GUI is with the LINUX environment. I fou still have to drop down to a shell to change your screenmode stettings, then it's rather useless. I would also rather have a CD-ROM with all the needed files ready to install, and I would gladly pay for it. Downloading and assembling it all is such a pain really. (they don't make it clear what files you really need to use the system. It's a nice concept, but I feel that it could use a better explanation of how it is useful,ma nd how it is set up and installed.)

Sorry youre amigas wont go faster. Whit this sute.
Some one needs to port som GFX driver from
AMIGA to LINUX, and make the nessery changes to
make them work with the X11 and svgalib.
The Driver you are using a crappy.
(NOT REALY FINISHED DRIVER!!!!)
