The Mac and Windows players for this new MPEG4-based movie compression codec and some test movies using the codec were released on the 15th, as was announced. The Amiga player is in development, but won't be released for a while, according to this interview. There is also a poll to determine what platform people will be running 3ivx on.

Hmm - Divx movies use over 38-40% of the CPU on my Duron 650. I wonder what kind of Amiga you'd have to have to play a full DVD Quality movie back...

One which would cost a hell of a lot more than a Duron 650 box...

Well I heard that to get really decent quality you'll need a Pentium 3 800 or better. Its got serious performance problems.

Well im not so sure about this new 3ivx but as for Divx in general i can run full screen Divx Movies with no problems on a Celron 366 with 64 ram and an old slow HD.
I will do a test on 3ivx soon and let you all know. Still im looking forward to seeing it run on the Amiga. Id say PPC only.

I can play DIVX at high quality on a P3-450Mhz without any problem so I think an Amiga with G3 or G4 will have no problem. I wonder if the PPC604 could tho...
As far as I know anyways the 3ivx beta version that was released is far from being usable. Seems the reviews gives it a 2/10 ... :(

I read somewhere yesterday that it would work ok on a P3 350 (as divx does), and
if they did well, it might aswell go on a P2 266. Can't remember where I read
it, but prolly on www.3ivx.com , www.3ivx.nu or in some interview.
If you're running hosted (esp. on windows), chances as that you'll need quite
some extra power. Native though, ought to be faster than the windoze version,
but that also depends on how well they succeed in optimizing for the two
platforms.
Oh yea, when I checked the poll, we had 96%.. God bless the Amiga community ;)

Looking at the current vote results, why I am led to think that this 3ivx stuff is only of interest for Amiga users? Seems more like a hoax to me. :/

Well, before someone (errm, could have been me ;))
posted about the poll here yesterday, AmigaOS had about 5 votes
(including the one I cast). About an hour later we had almost 50, still below
winblows but above mac and the rest. After another two hours and a similar
post at amiga.org, we equaled windos at about 90.
But when I came to the office this morning I was stunned, 900 additional
votes overnight! And now (When I'm about to go home) we have 1354!!
I don't think this is a hoax (Though it's possible someone has found out how
to cheat the system), but simply a proof of how much Amiga users are longing
for something new and cutting edge to be released by non-Amiga developers
(It kinda makes us feel wanted when someone who's not an Amigamaniac
notices and is willing to support us, don't it?). And also ofcourse that
Amiga needs all the exposure we can get, could have helped to gain a few
of them votes.
Cheers all, and a Merry Christmas!

well.. i don't trust in any new standard which only open-sources
the decoder but not the encoder.

Well there's no such processor as a P3-350 :). But I think I know what you mean :).
I've found that the celerons can play Divx/DVD movies in software - but trust me its not as smooth as a faster P3 or Duron/Thunderbird. In fact most DVD movies will look slighty choppy to the trained eye.
