Wired have now revealed this year's top 10 of vaporware products. Amiga didn't make it to the list this year (luckily?). The crown went to MacOS X.

Nice to see it for once. Still, they now have set thimselves a task to bring out a complete OE next year and new hardware via authorised suppliers, according to Eyetech' WOA2000 presentation. Allowing for the usual I.T. industry 'slippage', they ain't got a snowballs chance in hell.........
Still, I'll bet £1000 with myself (or whatever it costs for a new system) that they don't make it for next year. This don't include limited functuality set top boxes, I'm talking proper Desk top computing c/w OS3.x emulation etc.
Never in my life will I enjoy being proved wrong more than this.
Regards

Although I am very pessimistic as well, I am sorry to say that there will
not be an OS3.x "emulator" with first versions of AmigaDE similar to MacOS
(I'm not talking about UAE, right?)
Fleecy said that if there is enough demand, the "emulator" will be developed
but in any case it will appear before 2002.

Hehe, they couldn't stand not mentioning the Amiga... On top of page two (about IA-64):
' "I've been hearing about it since 1997 and I actually think new, whole Amigas are going to ship before this ever sees the light of day," said Nathan Walls. '

Just note that the first version(s) of the DE will be shipped with the Eyetech AmigaOne 1K2/4K's (at least in theory) in 1Q01, which product will also has a 68K emulator, with which you will be able to run OS3.x apps at hopefully good speeds, too. Though, IMHO, it will be a dual-boot system, OS3.x/DE.

Actually I'd better apologise. My original comment was tongue-in-cheek (hence the bet with myself). However since Amiga themselves commented on 'difficulty obtaining funding' my comment regarding them getting a complete OE out next year is valid - since any company with restricted funding is always going to struggle meeting deadlines. Anyway, if I'm wrong, I will have to go out and buy a new system!

We need a top 10 Amiga vapor-ware survey, or maybe a top 100 even.

In reply to Comment 5 (victor #):
This is what I meant. The Amiga One from Eyetech will
have the 68k emulator from H&P because there will not
be a 68k CPU in the motherboard and AmigaOS is 68k
only.
Once the AmigaDE is released, you will have the
possibility to boot AmigaOS or AmigaDE, but to run
AmigaOS applications inside AmigaDE you will still
need an emulator like UAE.

In reply to Comment 10 (its about time):
Not necessarily. Another option would be to provide an emulation layer within the OS; providing native (VP) libraries that do just the same as their OS3.x counterparts, and providing a OS3.x compatible way for calling them. If done right, you could run your "Classic" application just like you would run your AmigaDE app. Yes, the "Classic" app would still be limited to the capabilities of OS3.x.
However, with UAE you have a seperate screen or window where you run your "Classic" apps, pretty much cut-off from the rest of the system. An emulation layer as described above could provide a much more transparent way of using old stuff alongside with new software.

In reply to Comment 11 (Martin Baute):
Yes, of course. But Amiga Inc. have no plans to
develop it (see comment 3 and
http://www.amiga.com/products/one/faq.shtml), and if
one is finally developed, it will not be released
before 2002. So, if you want to run an AmigaOS classic
application, you need UAE or a similar emulator.
Thats the way it is.

Maybe a 3rd party will pick up this (seems to be big) task, and deliver sooner. It would be a quite useful (and so paying) thing, I think.

In reply to Comment 1 (John Davis):
Well, Eyetech / AInc said that developers would get their AmigaOne systems in December 2000.
Do any developers have them yet? This would give a good indication as to whether they were on track or not.
