Apex Designs have released a playable demo of Payback. The full game is due to be released in less than a week.

If you'd always wondered what it would be like to be a master criminal, then Payback is the game for you. It's entirely non-linear - to complete a level you simply have to obtain a certain number of points - how you get those points is entirely up to you; you can do what the local kingpin tells you, uncover secret missions or just go on a mad killing spree. There are lots of hidden surprises to discover, so you'll have to play the game through several times to find all the extras.

As you'll have probably guessed, the game is inspired by Grand Theft Auto, but every effort has been put in to make sure that Payback beats GTA in every way. The game engine supports perspective correct texture mapping, environment mapping (reflections), bump mapping, realistic shadows, alpha-channelling (lens flares, explosions and shockwaves), 12 channel 3D sound and realistic physics. The game will also be translated into several languages. This is a game that all Amigans can be proud of.

Features of the full game include:

  • Perspective correct texture mapping.
  • Environment mapped cars
  • Bump-mapped reflections
  • Realistic physics model
  • Advanced alpha-channelling effects. (Check out those explosions and lens flares!)
  • 3 huge cities to explore.
  • Dozens of vehicles to drive, each with their own unique handling characteristics. Includes trucks, cars, buses, boats, tanks and a few other surprises!
  • Motion captured human animation.
  • Realistic real-time shadows.
  • Non-linear mission structure.
  • Advanced 3d audio system: Stereo, 12 channels, tracks up to 500 sounds, realistically simulates doppler effect and inverse-square law.
  • Runs well on an 040/25 - and is even better on faster machines!
  • Multiplayer mode with support for up to 4 players.
  • CD32 and PSX joypad support.
  • Graphics card support at resolutions of up to 1280x1024.

As soon as it becomes available, you will be able to buy the full game at:

I mailed you privately, looking forward for a reply :)
From the short amount of time you get, it's quite good (the little
touches are excellent - snowflakes, footprints, flamethrower ;). I
never knew you could get so much blood out of computer characters
either.
I hope you do well with it.

Didn't he say he was going on holiday or something, so there wouldn't
be updates for a few days?

so far i think your game is pretty good....although a bit slow on my
040 at 25Mhz...any chance of a PPC version so i can use it on my
240MHz PPC and Bvission?
also when you answer the phone at the far left of the set of phones
the game crashes :(
also the 3 minute game time is a bit harsh..i wouldn`t mind but you
have to wait ages for the game to load before you can play and then
after your 3 mins are up your forced to wait AGES for the text to
scroll down before you can play again.
how about bug fixed demo without all the annoying wating and
a bit more game time.
:)

I've had no problem with crashes and answering the left phone.
The game runs good on my 50 Mhz 030 (fpu) at Low Res-- it is somewhat playable at High Res (but not High Res Interlaced).
There are lots of impressive details in this game (like the change in sound when you walk across a bridge or the limp you develop if injured enough).

The city is actually called 'Los Francos', but I agree the cars ought

made them drive on the left and it's too late to change now. You'll

I'd like to do a PPC version, although that's dependant on sales of

(They've had it for 4 months so far.)
The demo shouldn't crash in the way you describe (or at all for that
matter) - get in touch with me by email and I'll try to track down the
problem. Does it crash every time? Have you got any unusual
software installed on your system? Run Enforcer and see if that gives
any clues.

Oh, I forgot to answer the bit about a longer demo. The demo is really
just supposed to be a teaser which should be enough to allow you to

don't plan to increase the time limit, sorry.

Yup... Payback is ALL OVER GTA... I have GTA... I won't ever play GTA again... Consider cash in hand from me when the game come back from the print pub. The one thing that I did to speed up the time to play the game... create a RAD drive of about 10MB and copy the entire directory over... setup an ENV: and needed monitor files... viola. When you get the "Times up" it's actually faster to reboot the system... played it for six hours strait like that... I want more... I was able to finish three missions in three minutes once I mastered getting hold of a cop car... hehehe... those suckers are FAST. You've done a spectacular job James... I look forward to receiving the full edition so that I can kiss my personal life goodbye.

Kind of funny this one... At first, I expected the game to be good, but "not my
type". After playing the demo once, that was still what I thought. Then I tried it
again. And again. And again. And again...

To sum it up: This 3 minute demo is AWESOME! I'm defineately buying the full game!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to play the demo just one more time...

Yes, exactly. The "gangster genre" never interested me at all...Never
saw any Godfather movies, never saw any episodes of the Sopranos, "A
Piece of the Action" was one of my least favorite Star Trek episodes,
I wasn't going to buy Payback....

Yes, exactly again. :) Never mind the missions, it's fun just
driving around and crashing into things. :) The physics,
interaction, graphics, and attention to detail are really quite
good.

well i`m now running the game in low res and its more playable now (i was running in 640X480 on the Bvission before)...its just a pain having to use my old monitor to play the game....this game really needs a PPC version.....but i have to say i cant help playin the demo constatly and wasting hours and hours of my time just driving round :)...ill buy the game now to encourage a PPC version.
only bad thing about the game so far that i have found is that if you try and steal someones car from the other side from where the driver sits then your guy just keeps trying to run into the wrong door.....you should make the guy jump over the car like on GTA as when things get hectic (and slow down) i forget which side is the drivers side ;)
as for the phone box on the left crashing the game...then yes it does it everytime...ill download the LHA and copy it to my HD again to see if that fixes the prob.
for some reason i think i have read there will be a level editor with the game...is that true or am i thinking of something else?

Oh yes... this is excellent!
Since Daniel himself is kind enough to answer questions here:
To start with, I was annoyed at the way some of the cars didn't
reverse like a real car, ie: the steering swapped sense. But after a
while it seemed that it differs from car to car?!
Heh, being a bit slow to get the hang of any game, this seems to be a
very difficult demo for me! Is this an example of the easy, medium or
hard levels?
I've no idea if anyone intends releasing updates or bugfixes for this
game? Normally with games it's released and "that's it", making me
wish I was on the playtesting team! ;-)
For those discussing performance: The demo seems pretty smooth with
Euro36 640x400 on AGA with '060. :) - Better than I expected!
Good work Daniel and Apex Designs!

In reply to Comment 15 (IanG):
The steering on all vehicles is flipped when reversing (just like in
a real car) - it cannot vary from vehicle to vehicle because this all
vehicles (all the ones with wheels, anyway :) share the same steering
code. The only notable exception is when you're a person, in which
case the steering is not reversed. If you can give me an example of a
pair of vehicles where this is not the case then I'll fix it.
I should point out that the game has already been extensively
playtested by a team of over a dozen people over a period of
more than a year, so I don't think there are any major bugs left in
the game. However, I do plan to release updates to fix any bugs that
do come to light, as well as add new features like PPC support.
(Although of course this does depends on whether the game sells enough
to justify the expense.)
The level in the demo is the third one in the full game, so the
complete game isn't as hard as the demo is to begin with, although it
does get harder later on.
The RRP is 34.95 GBP + P&P and I will be selling at this price. You'll
be able to buy the game from http://www.apex-designs.net/shop/ using
almost any credit or debit card. (Or cheque if you prefer.)
PS: 'Daniels' is my surname, not my first name. :)

Let me know if redownloading the LHA doesn't fix the problem. The
download site was swamped as soon as I announced the demo (an average
of 1 download a minute yesterday!), so unfortunately it's very likely
that some downloads failed. The archive should be 2937408 bytes big.
If it's not, then you should try downloading it again.
A Map Editor is included with the game, although you can only use it
to make levels for the multiplayer mode. (Making single player
missions is a much more difficult process and I doubt enough people
would be make use of such a feature to justify implementing it.
Still, I'll consider add it if lots of people request it.)

Single player "map/mission editor" would really rock. People can generate
new levels for each other. This gives the game more length and would really be nice.
You don't have to make the editor easy to use (hard to program). Just the map editor together with a mission spec file that could look ugly as hell (like the way you make your missions). Mission creators would still use it. I know I would. :)

If a level editor was made, I'm sure that there would be plenty of really good levels designed out there that it could potentially fill up an entire dir on the Aminet. Look at how successful Doom and Quake were with the level editors. The demo itself is just so much fun that I want to download the game again! For those who haven't found it yet... There's a helicopter in the demo... YEAH! Now all I need to find is a tank perhaps.
Gotta go... it's Payback time!

Yes, and being used to driving a real car, I was surprised to discover
the first vehicle I stole (a white truck) didn't do that. OTOH almost
every vehicle since has worked fine, so maybe it was a glitch or my
imagination. %-)
> I should point out that the game has already been extensively

Of course. I did not wish to imply in any way that I thought the game
was inadequately tested! Instead I was trying to express how, when a
demo or other teaser is released, the huge number of people inevitably
come up with a few good suggestions. Historically, game producers
rarely offer support or updates to the game, this has perhaps changed
a little recently. The tone of your monthly progress reports suggests
you have enthusiasm for your creation akin to someone coding for fun,
not money, and I wondered if this extended to providing post-release
feature updates.

Which kinda answers what I've said above. :)

That's good. I take a while to get the hang of games, but like them to
present a challenge in the long run. I have never been the type to
boast of "I finished this ten hours after I bought it"...
> PS: 'Daniels' is my surname, not my first name. :)

Nice demo, just a bit slow on 040 :)
Anyways, a friend of mine, one that is good at making things do differently than expected, made the bus tip 90 degrees so it was head down to the ground :) Was kinda nice being able to see the bus from all sides :)
Also, some times when starting the game, I get a lot of output about being unable to load a texture(I think it was) with a stringpointer, I get hundreds of them if it happens, any clue why?
Oh, and if you drive to the top right road and then drive down towards the helocopter, there's a texture that reminds me of uninitialized memory on the north side of a building :)
That was what I could remember for now, but there was a couple of other things.

Single player editor: To make single player maps, you'd not only need
to be adept at making maps with the Map Editor, but you'd also have to
know C. (The missions are effectively seperate executables that
communicate with the main game.) Bearing this in mind, would you still
be keen to make single player levels?
Jumping over cars: Probably, although it's not a high priority.

Are you kidding? This is even better. If you can create levels
in c this means that the there are no "artistic" limitations besides the
API to the game engine. The question is though, how does the API to the
game engine look like? Reading between the lines in your letters it sounds like
it's PRETTY much coding. How big is the mission-file (uncompiled) you have to write for the demo-level?

our own graphics too?
I'd certainly love to be able to make whole mission levels. Depends on
how neat the API for the missions is. OTOH I'd soon lose interest in
making multiplayer layouts which I wont be using.. :-/
The Quake engine has C-like event descriptions and look how many third
party amatuer versions of things there are for that! It would be
great! :)

What sort of speeds are you getting in 800x600? On my 060/PicassoIV,
320x240 is very fast and smooth, and gets steadily less so the higher
the resolution. By 800x600 it's down to a few frames per second, which
is impressive, considering, but not really playable IMO. (But, with a PPC

Please buy, buy, buy this game! The Amiga market really needed some original Amiga games, and not just conversions.
Last year we saw really few original Amiga titles, and just a bunch of them were decent; most of the games are Pc conversions, who are a) slow or b) they miss some features of the pc version.
I'm very glad to see still GOOD games developed on the Amiga :) Congratulations, James!

The game is nice, but too slow in 640x480 (I consider 2D-movement below 30fps as slow). Maybe you should consider doing Warp3D-support, this would increase both speed and quality. Then I will think of buying it :-)

The game isn't 2d, it's 3d. The game will run much smoother at a lower
resolution such as 320x240 or, if this is too blocky for your tastes,
you could try an intermediate resolution such as 512x384. PPC and W3D
support are both planned (although they do depend on game sales and
when/if DCE fix my PPC board), but I don't think you should decide
whether or not to buy a title based purely on which hardware it
supports - surely the gameplay is much more important?

Yes, gameplay is important, but when the game is so slow that it is no longer possible to steer the vehicle correct, the playability of the game is close to 0. A fast car is difficult to control in 3 FPS. I've tried the game on 060 too, and the 060 running in 800x600 is faster than my 040 running in 320x240.

>The game isn't 2d, it's 3d
No, actually, it's 2d. Using a 3d engine makes it spiffier, but it could
be rendered with plain 2d graphics and not really lose anything essential
to the gameplay. Try that with, say, Quake, and it won't work.
That said, the game is more than fast enough with an 060 at low resolutions,
so if I can get playable speeds at 480x360 (though it gets choppy if it zooms
way out), it really ought to be OK at 320x240 with an 040. If not, there's
either a hardware problem or a problem with Cybergraphics or something, because
there's no way it should be getting only a few frames per second, unless 1)
you're using an unexpanded A1200 ;), or 2) You're playing in 800x600 or higher.
Besides, James has an 040, and I hardly think the developer is going to write
a game that's unplayable on his own machine. ;)

Huh, uhh, as I said before, Payback is faster in 800x600 with 060 than in 320x240 with 040. Try playin the game in 1024x768, then you get the feeling of what it is like on 040.
