A week ago some rumours were flying around about a mediator bug ('vertical lines' trashing on the screen) found in the cards sold before the 13 december 2000. Elbox answered in a press release that it is not a bug but a feature (a hardware protection) that was removed after WOA2000 negotiations. They do not plan to change the chip that provides the hardware protection but they will provide a software which will enable to use the card without any problem Did some minor corrections to the article.

It's not a bug, it's a feature.
At least ELBOX can not claim the copyright on that :D

This is a bad summary as Elbox never stated their future software will
enable the flawless operation of an 8M window. This is the typical Elbox
style press release to blenden people: They only said the future software
will reach max performance of the busboard, they don't mention the 8M
window!
Beleave me, those buggy-Mediator owners will NOT be able to use an 8M
window, even with this announced update! I guess they have added
something like a "clever memory window switch scheduler" which will
reduce those switches to a minimum, even with more drivers, but that's all.
If they could "remove" the effects of this HW "feature" by software they
would have done this a long time ago. After all, Mediator users have cried
about those vertical lines since the very release of the Voodoo3 driver!

In reply to Comment 2 (Anonymous):
Well, thy state "performance independently of the 'memory window' jumper's setting"
This includes the 8 MB one.....
Reduce the window switches???
Erm....4 MB means more window switches if you have to adres the same memory space.....but I coul be wrong ofcourse :))
The voodoo driver became better and better.....recent compares on the mediator and G-REX mailings proved that the CGFX4 driver has a long way to go to get equal results....
Then there's the upcoming official Picasso96 along with a new P96 version (with some nice features)....
BTW...people on the mediator mailinglist reported that the vertical lines were not gone with the newest Mediators so it could be a driver problem afterall....
But just wait for the new voodoo driver before starting a discussion :)
