AmiRaoul wrote: Mr. Fleecy Moss, Vice President of Product Development for Amiga Inc. posted on the amigaone ML over the subject of what graphic cards AmigaOne will support: "It is the next generation card that Matrox develop. However, all that means is that for Amiga products, that is the only card we will support WHEN it comes out, and we cannot at this time reveal that information. The G450 will be supported, and I believe Eyetech have arranged for the V3 to also be supported."

This all sounds strange. Why is Amiga so caught by their partners? An OS only supporting very little hw does not stand a chance in the mass market. But we all know this from before. Uhh!i

But then again, Apple have only ever supported a small variety of
graphics cards. Only recently have they started to add other
manufacturers chipsets.

In reply to Comment 1 (m0ns00n):
Or maybe there just happens to be one or more characteristics of Matrox's hw that Amiga feel need to be stressed in order to establish an identity. If they had chosen nVidia as did Microsoft with Xbox, it would be for the sake of their GPU and programmable shaders. Or had it been ATI, as when Amiga were under Gateway, it would indicate an emphasis on DVD and significant 3D strength. By choosing Matrox, it would seem Amiga are attracted to the idea of multiple monitor support and a reputation for exceptional image clarity. Perhaps there will be other cutting edge features in the Matrox hw that other companies simply just don't yet offer. Besides, it's like a nice hybrid of custom and off-the-shelf to allow a company like Matrox (for example) to develop its hw as it prefers without having to worry about what Microsoft and the other chip makers are doing in a seperate (Wintel) market.

Didn't the Warp3D team implement T&L support in Warp3D V4? Ofcourse they know more then just "next generation matrox gfx card" they must know some of the new features...Does this include a hardware T&L engine? Could be nice.......

It seams stange that a OS that claims to be able to run on so may other Os, can run on so many different CPU, but will only support a few graphics cards. (Why?)

Oh, people, come on and *think*.
As for "why Matrox": Matrox allowed them to have a look into their chip schematics. nVidia most likely didn´t - they don´t even have the Linux geeks have a peek.
As for "why *only* Matrox": Amiga Inc. is on very limited funds. Writing (and supporting) drivers is expensive. If you read Fleecy´s statement (and other statements made earlier) cautiously, you will see that the Matrox card is the one that will be supported *initially*. It is very likely that others will follow, either because Amiga Inc. then has the funds to do so, or because other manufacturers might supply their own driver set.

AFAIK, if the AmigaDE runs hosted, it will use the (in this case) graphics drivers of the underlying OS. For example, If I run AmigaDE hosted on winblows and that machine has a GeForce it will use windows' geforce Drivers.
Please correct me if I'm wrong (talk about asking for trouble!)

Interesting.
Then how do you explain the FACT that nVidia continually release Linux drivers for their cards?
Oh, and let's not forget the GeForce2 is supported fully in MacOS and, indeed, the GeForce 3 will be available on the Mac FIRST, before windows.
So much for your "nVidia don't support other platforms" bull...

In reply to Comment 9 (Anonymous):
Perhaps it depends on what you call "support" and what is necessary for Amiga.
I don't know about it so i take it from your words that there are drivers by
nVidia for platforms other than Windows. But those drivers are binary, i presume?!
I could imagine that Amiga needs a little more insight to adapt the driver to their
special OS environment (or vice versa) and in that case a binary-only is not very
helpful.
I vaguely remember a thread about supporting nVidia graphic cards in Amiga PCI solutions.
There were comments that nVidia would not give out any programmer information about
their cards.

What an agressive responce....everything alright with your sexual life?
Ahem...well....nVIDIA did only recently make their *own* drivers for alternative platforms and not giving away any chip documentation.....
In the AmigaDE case, matrox isn't doing any (full) drivers...Amiga has to deliver them.....
About the GeForce 3 first for MAC stuff......HAHAHAHAHA S*CKAAAAH!!! oops.....i'm sorry...(seen the first test with the GF3 with beta detonator 11.2 drivers and Direct8?)
Two possibilities for you to say such "b*llshit" (If you allow me to quote you :) )
1) you're a MAC fan
2) Just wanna post some crap out of frustration about the first sentence of this comment....

In reply to Comment 10 (Ralph):
That true, nVIDIA made drivers for Linux and very recently MAC. But they did it themself because they have gained enough market share (?). Don't expect nVIDIA to write drivers for AmigaDE or Picasso96/cybergfx. And they *DON'T* give away any information about their chips. Even if you are prepared to sign a NDA.
Matrox on the other hand isn't so pathetic about keeping their chip information a secret. Be a serious compagny, sign a NDA and off you go....
That's the difference between being open to alternative platforms and being "open" to platform only when it is profitable to write your own drivers.....

Hello Amifan,
I see you are spouting on areas about which you know nothing again.
Let me give you a clue - the GeForce 3 will be released (i.e. sold to the public) with the Mac BEFORE it is sold for PCs.
How is this possible?
Easy - nVidia and Apple were WORKING TOGETHER on this.
*gasp*!!!
What's that? nVidia working with another company?!?!
Yes!!!
Just as they were doing with AInc before AInc, in yet another of their legendary U-turns, ditched nVidia for the far less impressive Matrox stuff.
Oh, btw, I am not a "Mac fan". I don't even HAVE a Mac, although I do have (and use daily) 4 Amigas - but hey, don't let mere facts interfere with your posts, right?

I've read the news on nVIDIA.com....well.... you're right, just start asking them for the AmigaDE introduction then......
It must has cost Apple a fortune to get this exclusive....on the other hand...as to b read on the nvnew site.....The GeForce 3 is delayed because OEM manufactures find to many bugs in the chips...they refuse to fabricate the gfxboards......that leaves all the corrupted GeForce3 to apple then....
But....does it change anything about the status of nVIDIA versus alternative platforms...don't think so......

Probably you don't need massive hardware support for cellphones and STBs...
After all, Matrox cards generally have better TV out, which is what matters when you can only use your Amiga DE on a TV...

Concentrating on one hardware makes sense. The number one reason for compatibility problems on Windows (and on linux too) is graphics driver issues. Concentrating on a specific hardware will allow the drivers to be fine-tuned for optimal performance, plus developers won't need to have four different graphics card to ensure the thing works. Finally, it allows you to count on certain features to be present from the start. On consoles like the PS2 or Dreamcast, you have pretty much the same situation, and the Xbox is so attractive to game developers exactly because of the same reasons.

GF3's already released in Japan....Granted...11.xx drivers aren't exactly stable ...but you get frequent glimpses of just what this card is capable of.

That's strange, like that other one said. Apple will ship them first, bundled with a new MAC, this month....actually, they should already have because their "month" has expired.....
There were also some interesting speed results....The GF3 isn't that faster then the GF2 ultra...but a lot more features....The T&L engine is programmable....as soon as you use this programmable T&L engine, older GFS cards can't use their T&L engine anymore, making the GF2 a lot less fast :)

Ever heard of the World Wide Web?
Have a look - you'd be amazed at the information out there.
That GeForce 3 is coming to the Mac was announced at the MacWorld on Feb 22nd ( http://www.geforce.com/Pages.nsf/pages/pr_022201 ).
That nVidia have drivers for more than just Windows can be seen if you take the rather unheard of step of visiting nVidia's web site - hint, take a look at http://www.geforce.com/drivers where you'll see drivers available CURRENTLY for Windows, Linux, BeOS and OS/2.
As I said, perhaps you might want to actually do some research before you start posting in future, hmm?
Oh, and which "guy at micron [sic]" do you mean? I would imagine there are probably quite a few people there. And what would that have to do with anything anyway? Or are you just trying to show off your new-found ability to do reverse DNS lookups?

You can read it on nVIDIA.com too...but hey....why go the easy way uh?
Still posting anonymously?
You must be a very brave boy. Anyway....didn't this announcement say that the Geforce3 will be available for the MAC in one month? This makes 22 March.... Can you give me an URL of some MAC test results?? Oh let me guess, you're friend got one :)
So this other guy is saying that thre are already PC version available in Japan....hmm.....
>As I said, perhaps you might want to actually do some research before you start posting in future, hmm?
Hmm same to you....nice to read an announcement, but where are they??
Gateway was supposed to deliver a new amiga too...so Escom and Viscorp...
Ever heard of the World Wie Web spreading more rumours and over possitive announcement then actual truth?? Seems *you* have to do some more investigation before you post some stuff in an announcement....
>Oh, and which "guy at micron [sic]" do you mean?
Since you post annonymously (applause for this brave guy!!) I had to do a little check on your IP...but sine you are ammazed by this what you call " newly found ability"....maybe I should share with you my little secret how to use the "name" box in the ANN comment form.....
Oh BTW...can you send me some GeForce OS/2 driver?
Don't know how Be did it BTW.....

OK, I'll bite.
Explain to me how my posts are any more anonymous than posts from someone who titles himself "Amifan" with no email address?
Clue - both are an anonymous as each other. Wierd, huh?
"So this other guy is saying that thre are already PC version available in Japan....hmm....."
No, they are not commercially available anywhere (or were not at that point). He was referring to a beta release or a release to developers. Hope this doesn't confuse you TOO much...
(Hint - they were on display in Macs at the Mac exhibition thingy, and developers had them before then - what a truely strange thing!)
">Oh, and which "guy at micron [sic]" do you mean?

No more anonymous than you, though. Guess that makes us equally brave, huh?
"I had to do a little check on your IP..."
"had" to? And what did this checking reveal?
Absolutely nothing.
Of course, you coudl always have just ASKED who I was, but then why bother doing things the easy way, eh?
So, I do hope you feel more enriched now that you know where my gateway to the Internet is - always glad toi be of assistance.
"but sine you are ammazed by this what you call " newly found ability"....maybe I should share with you my little secret how to use the "name" box in the ANN comment form..... "
And how does this make either me or you any less anonymous, hmmm?
Hint - it doesn't. But then, don't let trivialities like this upset you.

As ithers have noted, Nvidia do support other platfroms, including BeOS (although they just point to Be's website,
at least they released their code ...), and as for Matrox, the origional Amiga's had great Video/Stereo out
(for a PC I think they were the only ones for a long long time) and they were exceedingly easy to uprgrade to
video capturing.
It has taken quite some time for other platforms to catch up, and there is a dearth of video capture platforms
that run stably as a whole for under tens of thousands of dollars. If we are talking about a system that can be
bought relativly cheaply and has the same benefits as the origional systems it
will certainly find favour with
multimedia people who know what they're talking about.
After all some of the origional systems are still in use.
