What about the small print on
http://www.matrox.com/mga/products/mill_g450/pci.cfm
* G450 PCI is recommended for systems based on Intel chipsets. Feature and performance support for systems based on non-Intel chipsets is limited.

In reply to Comment 1 (W.N.P Rademaker):
thats the same kind of disclaimer that all "pc" companies have had.
as far as they are concerned ide/scsi harddrives, ram, printers etc
works with pc's and if you're lucky they'll say it'll work with a
mac as well.
it's potentially good news, just got to wait and see what matrox
and elbox make of it.

Sounds good, but didn't the old Amiga have a sort of "dual head"?
I mean it put out NTSC or PAL, and RGB...lower resolution maybe,
plus it was intergrated into the OS.....
Anyway, due to the number of companies going modular it seems that
the best way to tie in all different advances is to have an
OS that can handle all of them....still I would like to see
a standalone that starts at a higher plane than everything, but is
modular enough to handle all advances through an "innovation" cycle
so that when the next "innovation" cycle hits it has enough cash
to get involved in that one....
But it looks good to PCI owning Amigans.....

In reply to Comment 3 (acg):
"Dual Head" means the G450 has two VGA sockets at the rear, and you can plug in two monitors at the same time and have two pictures. The G450 also comes with an adaptor cable for Video/Television output (nice for watching DVD's or MPEG's)... But essentially it means two graphics cards in one.
Regards.

In reply to Comment 4 (Hans-Joerg Frieden):
Yope, you`re right.
Anyway, if you plug a graphics board into an Amiga you can use two different outputs, as
I did using ProStation Audio, showing the samples on one screen (gfx card) and the mixing table on the
other (Amiga PAL screen). Using Picasso96 I now can use two Gfx boards.
It did nothing but wet my appetite for the AmigaOne still further: even this "small" board looks like two Picasso IV
boards crammed into one, with 3D features as well as TV hook ups :) Just imagine the features its big brother will have!
Now where have I put that bloody credit card?
regards,
Alex

I must chime in again:-) Amiga needs drivers for tile based 3d cards like KyroII. I find this technology amazing! Alas I don't know if there is a PCI version of the KyroII yet... But if there isn't I'm sure there will be one soon enough. Tile based rendering gfx cards do not require alot of bandwidth and would most likely be the fastest solution for todays classic PCI boards. 2 drawbacks are 1)Writing drivers for it is a bitch so I hear. 2)No harware T&L yet(no amiga cards have yet anyhow). However at $175, and able to beat the Geforce 2 GTS, and even the ultra on some tests we need it!

Thanks for the correction....
I guess I didn't read the "Matrox" info on their site very
completely....
Anyway, what do you think the Matrox 800 or whatever, the new
generation Matrox that Fleecy talked about will have?

Well, matrox rulez as a company. Unless you only play games their product are more mature than other offerings. See their commitment to linux for example.
Workbench might not have multi-head capability intricly, but this doesn't permit you to install 2 or more GFX cards and use amiga's superior screen system. Nevertheless, MUI programs can display any child window into any screen-monitor but it would be perfect if we could move windows between screens with simply a mouse drag.
Can't remember if it is possible to move a MUI window with an ARexx command or even using MCP (maybe ModPro ?). Any help ?

In reply to Comment 9 (sutro):
Theoretically you could have two Monitor drivers in devs:Monitors, like
G450H1.info and G450H2.info, and have two sets of screen modes for each head. Then you could easily open a screen on the second monitor and use that for e.g. video playback (perhaps on a TV), and use the primary for the Workbench. Or for a Rendering package, you could have the secondary for preview and stuff, while you work on the primary...
That's cool...

And I wonder why that might be?
Can't tell because you don't know, or don't want to tell because the G550 (for that is the "next gen" Matrox chip that AInc reckoned would blow away every other graphics chip in the world) is actually not living up the AInc's hype and you would be embarrassed to admit to what it actually does?

Then give some clues - does it actually beat or even match the GeForce 3 in terms of performance, for example?
Or the GeForce 2?
Or does it struggle to hold against the GeForce?
After all, if you are doing 3D games, you want a good 3D gfx chip, don't you...

Really, I do not care if the card can do giga bloop renderings per second. What I care about are the dual monitior support and the fact that Matrox is The best Graphics Display card that money can buy. For my work and business this is more important for those of use that creat media content for small business and such. Would it be nice to play games and have a card that can do a good job at it, YES, but it is not what I need. The other thing that matrox could perhaps give us with the drivers is the video rendering software they produce for the Matrox 2000 video editing system, this surley would be a kick ass plus and I hope Ben/Hyperion can do a port of this software to Amiga OS 4.0, If you do I will beta test it for you guys. Come on do it, we need a cool video editing system for 4.0(((((-:

Good news BUT NO news....
Does anyone interest for writing a 2d driver for this marvelous card? and better yet a neccessary 3D driver ?
What about our true friends ? (see word Friedens)

Y'know, there's always the possibility that comparisons might not be valid in this case. Amiga stated very early on that they chose Matrox not for the raw numbers but for their outstanding quality. Just as Matrox led with environmental bump mapping (on the G400, right?) they could quite possibly be working on a card capable of superior realism over even the GeForce3. Whether it actually matches (or exceeds) it in polys/texels/pixels/mips/gflops/etc. may not be Amiga's or Matrox's biggest concern. Afterall, Matrox has the new Amiga to itself for the time being... What better opportunity to innovate than in a market in which they're not forced to compete with NVidia or ATI? It might be nice to see developers giving better graphics as high a priority as faster graphics for a change.

I agree totally about the KyroII.
I keep on mentioning it on the yahoo amigaone group ... :)
Stuff NVidia and ATI - their technologies are the old generation - powerful but by brute force.
KyroII is such an "Amiga" technology, if ever there was one now. Efficient, nimble, cheap but darn good.

Due to the close relationship of Amiga and Matrox all future Matrox cards will be supported by AmigaOS 4. This will probably include the G450.
