Michael Domoney quotes an Aminet MOTD: The following four archives on Aminet were unfortunately infected: util/boot/StackAttack.lha, util/boot/BlazeWCP.lha, util/virus/Safe.lha and util/boot/FBlit.lha. They contain faked releases of the original software linked with a Trojan horse which sends out abusive e-mails. On infected systems a process called "zakahackandpatch" will show up. If your system is infected deleted the software listed above or replace it with older versions and reboot. As a protest against this abuse of Aminet we will shut down our services on "us.aminet.net" and "de.aminet.net" until Friday.

It a pretty serious thing that happened (those pics were probably enough to get Aminet kicked off server worldwide) but I can't help but feel that it's punishing everyone just because of one asshole. Why just close those two though, I mean you can still use the Swedish mirror. Are they the only two which are capable of updating the new uploads?

Antagonising the majority is usually a tactic to bring peer pressure onto the wrongdoers. In this case, though, the majority *are* already against idiots posting viruses in other peoples' hard work.
I sympathise with Aminet wanting to protest, but the chosen action doesn't seem appropriate.

In reply to Comment 2 (Ian):
What other action can they take? Only accept uploads from trusted parties.

Yeah, that would do. Get people to register as an uploader. Dodgy
archives can then be tracked to the supplier.

It's a sad day that the largest collection of share/free/gift-ware needs to protest one person. This person is, in effect, taking away a greater resource than say CNN or Yahoo. This only hurts our community instead of fostering better relations amongst us. If they are reading this then go pester the Microsloth users.

In reply to Comment 4 (Ian):
It should be possible to track the uploaders of these files...
There should be the IP address of the uploader in their logs, and the exact date of upload; which is enough to know the ISP, and then, the uploader (if the ISP gives its name, that is).

It is not beyond the whit of man to find the culprit.
Once found the 'leaders' ie Amiga should arrange for law enforcement authorities to persue and capture the individual concerned.
It does not matter that we are a small community, such activity should not be accepted, and punishment should be swift and harsh.
Anyone who makes a legal complaint may well find that law enforement authorities are willing to take the crime seriously.

I agree totally. Let's find the guy and then insert a big-box Amiga where only Customs Men dare to probe!!!

I'm not impressed with the action Aminet has taken.
Probably those who uploaded the trojans will be happy that 2 Aminet mirrors were taken offline. As they obviously want to cause harm to the Amiga community. Aminet has therefore fulfilled their intent.
Aminet should check its uploads properly before making them available for download.
