Amiga Inc announced the development of AmigaOS4, the latest version of the high performance, user friendly operating system that introduced multimedia to the world at the St Louis trade and user show on the 31st March 2001. To support AmigaOS4, Amiga Inc also released the Zico hardware specification targeted at PowerPC processors. Elbox Computer Ltd are working closely with Amiga Inc to ensure that their existing and future products will gain Zico certification, and thus provide a perfect platform for AmigaOS4.

'Our long-term commitment to computer technology is now giving tangible results in the Amiga market,' said Maciek Binek, CEO of Elbox. 'Now, with the Amiga Inc. initiative, we can see a clear sign of future-oriented thinking and strategy, a breakthrough for this computer. We hope Amiga will soon again become the common word.'

'Elbox have taken a major role in not just supporting the existing Amiga market with their many products but also in providing a path forwards.' said Fleecy Moss, CTO of Amiga Inc. "Our relationship with them will ensure that their existing customers can benefit from AmigaOS4 whilst new users coming to the Amiga will have additional excellent choices in the hardware that they can buy.'

AmigaOS4 is currently under development and will ship in Summer 2001. Elbox products can already be purchased from all major Amiga dealers, and their next new product, the SharkPPC+ will be available along with the premiere of the AmigaOS4 system.

Excellent news for Mediator users. It also strikes down the "whiners" who complain that the only OS4.x upgrade option was via the AmigaOne. Obviously Amiga Inc stand by their promise to help any company that wants to produce Zico compliant hardware. The Prometheus will no doubt want to support OS4.x too, so even A3000 users should be able to run the next PPC Amiga OS too.

Hehe don't say that.
The wines will probably complain about the fact that they have to buy a mediator first and then a SharkPPC+. This will be about the same price as a completely new AmigaONE...
Some people are even serious about wanting to run it on their 166Mhz 603e and no GFX card :)
But we had this duscussion when we had to move from a 68000 to 68020+ and from OCS/ECS to AGA.
I know that i'll go for a Eyetech AmigaONE.. I'm afraid that my amiga won't be with me another couple of years so any major (read: $$$) upgrade is a waste of money...

Amifan, please, get a grip of yourself. The "whiners"? That is just a plain stupid category in this dialogue. Fact is, this is really reassuring, now as we have another hw company on board for the 4.x Amiga OS. Hopefully we'll see more. The AmigaOne just couldn't have been the only option. Hopefully, we'll see more of the standalone alternatives too.
-
Stop calling people whiners. The complaints are very much appropriate, as Amiga have made too many mistakes. Ok? Stop shouting whiners and community spillets now? Stop making categories that does not exist? Ok? Ok?

Common guys.
Stop throwing stones at each other and let's move forward with anything...
I'm going to do an analysis of AmigaOS4 along with every other system out there.
If it suits my needs I'll use it. If not then I won't.
(I have AmigaOS3.9 on A4000T/604 besides a MacG4 and WinME/2000 Dual boot 1.2Ghz/DDR Ram machine)
I'd like to see my aging Amiga replaced. We'll see how well they do...

I still remember the complaints when Commodore ran out of Amiga500's just before Xmas in the UK and decided to slip the unannounced A500+ into the A500 boxes instead. While some people were pleasantly surprised to find a 1mb ECS OS2.x machine in the box instead of the expected half meg, OCS OS1.3 version, others did nothing but mailbomb the various Amiga magazine letters pages with compaints about "program x" no longer runs, even when Relokick13 fixed it. Others wrote in and kindly offered to swap their old A500's with anyone dumb enough to hand over their sparkling A500+.
Same old story, same old whiners. I note that not too many A1000 owners are complaining that there is no upgrade path to OS4.x for their machine. I'm hanging on to my Commodore128 incase Eyetech produce a AmigaOne128 although I'll have to complain loudly if they do until Elbox make a tower soloution for it!!!

In reply to Comment 3 (m0ns00n):
uh? There ARE whiners. That's a fact...I know that there are even people complaining that you'll need a PowerPC for the new OS.
So you can make a catagory out of them.
What I ment to say is that this new announcement isn't enough to satisfy the "whiners". They want OS4.0 on their Phase5 PPC boards. They simply don't realise that it's time to move away from the hacked stuff....can you imagine a PC with some kind of socket on an IC to add new technology?
And ofcourse there's also another type of whiner, for them all the stuff that AmigaInc announces sucks, they want commodore back, but that not going to happpen too.
>The complaints are very much appropriate, as Amiga have made too many mistakes.
So what are all the mistakes by this Amiga (former Amino) are are you putting all the owners of the amiga brand in one catagory? The ones who makes mistakes?
This is what I hate about some people too. Every mistake made by Commodore/Escom/Gateway2000 are automatically the mistakes of newest owner AmigaInc....I know that you can remeber all the mistakes made by the several owners, but so far AmigaInc did the best job of them all (except commodore :) )

Hey - you mean, i cannot use OS4 anymore on my beloved A1000? Such a shame! *Booo!* We have
to quickly find a company offering a PPC-based solution for upgrading the only real Amiga that
ever existed! ;-DDDDDDDDDDD
Hehe - just kidding of course, but i'll never sell it, even if it is only capable of max. OS3.9...
(but it might play a part as surf & chat station in my upcoming DE home network - who else is able to
surf the net with a basically 16 year old machine? ;-)

In reply to Comment 12 (Ralph):
It should be possible to hook an a1000 up to a mediator with a bit of
glue logic. All you need to do is get someone to design a 16 to 32
bit bridge board that would convert the a1000 edge connector to
an a1200 one. If it included a1200 style ide as well it would
be the ultimate upgrade for those aging a1000's :-)

Well, this I found on www.vgr.com (the guy cited below "from another post" is
Fleecy, BTW):
"
Looks like Amiga Inc is giving the ok for AmigaOS4.0 to run on CyberStormPPC and BlizzardPPC's now, and a few companies are interested in doing the "Zico compatability layer".
From another post: "I apologise if I did say that because it isn't true 8-) We are very happy to talk, and indeed are talking to other companies who may wish to create a Zico compatability layer so
that OS4 runs on older PPC accelerators.
"
Sounds if not everything is 100% secured, but also sounds to me as if there
IS hope for owners of current PPC Boards :)

In reply to Comment 10 (Amifan):
While I don't think Amiga Inc (in its current incarnation) should be blamed for past mistakes by completely different companies/people, its equally unfair of them to say things like "Amiga have been on the forefront of multimedia technology since 1984 when..." etc. If you're going to take credit for the work of others, take the blame for their mistakes, or just be honest and say that Amiga is a _new_ company.
