This clarifies a lot! But just to be clear. You can't run AGA programs on a AmigaOne with AOS4.0 without a A1200 mainboard attached, but it will be possible to run programs which can be promoted by Modepro or simular programs. Just consider it an a3000 which isn't able to to run AGA progs. On the other hand, paula is be a problem to for non AHI programs....

Reading part2 it mentions, motorola will produce an easy upgrade from 32 to 64 bit. Does this mean that it is possible to unplug a 32 bit G4 on the AmigaOne and plug in the 64 bit version without any problems or would a new daughter/mother board needed ?

Book E, if I recall from a recent article somewhere, is the latest effort to try to keep IBM and Motorola PPC development from diverging. It's the shared game plan for the next howeverlong. Thus, I think Bill's comment means the 64-bit PPC won't be an Itanic. [Interesting sidenote- Intel has wanted to kill x86 for years, but the crufty li'l thing won't die. Looks like AMD will keep it alive for the near future...]

This update is really interesting, and in fact a bit reassuring. I will still wait and see what they will work out as of real products. But if they pull this through, the future of Amiga use will be very exciting. Hopefully, PureBasic will be on this platform so that I can get back to developing games and applications ;o) Remember those days of PAL/NTSC and AMOS? Hundreds of games and applications were made, because of the easy development language. If this would happen on the AmigaOS 4, everything would be bliss ;o))

I will watch with patience and hope ;o)

In reply to Comment 2 (Amifan):
I think you're making a reference to paragraph #3 under the heading AmigaOS 4 which says:
>3. allow for full backwards compatability via the Eyetech AmigaOne (with a
>classic Amiga attached) or retargetable application compatibility via any
>AmigaOne
Actually I think this is meant for the whole family of AmigaOs 4.x and actually it will be possible to run retargetable apps without a A1200 attached only from OS4.2 onwards. Fleecy, can you possibly shed some light on this, if you're reading?

In reply to Comment 3 (esseffe):
No it´s not the HW-aspect meant.
It´s only easy for the OS to go the path from 32 Bit to the 64 Bit challenge.
But if you build a ZIF Module containing a 64 Bit processor, then you´re in the
business, but I guess that wouldn´t make too much sense...
So for 64 Bit you´re gonna buy some new HW.

In reply to Comment 4 (Joe "Floid" Kanowitz):
Isn´t the POWER series from IBM the 64 Bit schedule of the PPC-Family?
Heard the POWER 4 will get the cup from DEC to be the fastest CPU out there...

I've asked the author about PureBasic and he says he's keeping his eye on the situation and will consider an AmigaOS4 version if it gets released.

I'm not sure I quite understand that, but to me it suggests that, at some point, you might be able to take your AmigaOS computer along with you wherever you go...walking under its own power.

The version number intervals are weird. 4.0 4.2 4.5 5.0.. where is 4.1? why skipping it and 4.3? Are they kidding? And 5.0 specifications points today's world's best OS, get serious!

Looks more likely that they're trying to impress the crowd with
buzzwords...
(*) and also that the memory protection "alternative" will still be
demanded to mechanisms inherent to the programming language instead of
being properly placed in the OS...

Well, after reading everything in the Exec/Tech Update, it sounds real promising. I'm cautiously optimistic (a bit excited even) about the new AmigaOS, and the roadmap for upgrades. I think that all along, we have all wished that there was some way to move our beloved OS forward and now Amiga have promised to do just that. Let's hope things move forward and on time. I'm hoping that other big name companies will now begin to see the new AmigaOS systems as a viable alternative market, and jump into the hardware end. This would give the platform some badly needed credibility, and maybe we would see local vendors carrying Amiga product once again. This is the only way I see to gain NEW Amiga users that don't know what Amiga is all about. It has to be in stores for them to see and tryout, and not just available to existing users.

Yes, this is truly exiting and promising information from Amiga Inc!!! I guess nobody would dare to hope for such news one year ago...
So I'm willing to wait... just a little bit more for Amiga OS 4.0 and AmigaOne :)

In reply to Comment 18 (Chris Roccati):
The memory protection will be placed inside the kernel of OS 5.
All the rest of those "buzzwords" are genuine features of OS 5. There is little point in producing yet another OS with more or less the same features as Linux, MacOS X, Windows 2000.
That's not what Amiga did in 1985 so I see little reason why Amiga Inc should do the same in 2002.

In reply to Comment 19 (Ben Hermans/Hyperion):
> The memory protection will be placed inside the kernel of OS 5.
The safe and unsafe environment COULD be related to sandbox "virtual
machine-like" protected spaces designed for security reasons, but the
mention of special "safe" languages (SafeC) which would be pointless
in a memory protected environments is dubious...
> All the rest of those "buzzwords" are genuine features of OS 5.
Let me see... Orthogonal persistency? Semantic Contexts? PDP sensory
processing system?
If you seriously ponder the meaning of the terms you see that they're
thrown around with marginal correlation the "meaning" explained in the
sentence they're mentioned, and it sound more like playing with big
words than providing real informations...
> There is little point in producing yet another OS with more or less
> the same features as Linux, MacOS X, Windows 2000.
What is provided is *EXACTLY* the same features provided by the other
OS'es (expecially in 1-2 years), only expressed using "big words"...
> That's not what Amiga did in 1985 so I see little reason why Amiga
> Inc should do the same in 2002.
In fact in 1985 amiga provided *EXACTLY* the same features provided by
others, the point was that the accessibility of these features: you
could use hires graphics, high quality sound or even multitasking, but
you'd have to pay an order of magnitude MORE than you had to pay for
the amiga. THAT was the revolution.
