Ben writes: Nokia are turning to Linux developers to ensure there is plenty of content available for it's new "Media Terminal" set-top box. Sounds like the perfect device to run Amiga DE... More details from The Register.

The s/390 can run linux, will that be the new DE device?
Comon, get a clue, bunch of Amiga zealots! http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/jargon/html/entry/Amiga-Persecution-Complex.html

There are certain benefits if the next generation of Nokia Communicator (epoc) and Nokia Media Terminal could use same binaries & multimedia interface...

I have yet to see DE available anywhere on any hardware for the final customer...
Seeing is believing!

Why is every device a "perfect device to run DE on"? Personally I think Amiga Inc. is realizing more and more what it takes to write a comprehensive OS. Linux is just about 10 years out now, and its just begging to look very usable. MS Windows arguably took about the same length of time (the first usable version being 95?).
This would probably explain their change of heart with Amiga DOS 4. Personally they should take a page from the folks at SGI - Amiga has always been about cool software AND super cool hardware. Except its not so cool anymore... - but in 92 it was awsome.
Or am I completely misled by their vague press releases and subsequent explanations (which just make me more confused) about the Amiga software. If its just an applications framework like I think it is then they really shouldn't call it Amiga.

> Why is every device a "perfect device to run DE on"?
Because the DE can run on quite every device either hardware or
software hosted? ('perfect' 'd be another issue, its _your_ word. :-)
>Personally I think Amiga Inc. is realizing more and more what it takes to write a comprehensive OS.
AmigaInc. _has realized_ some time ago.

> This would probably explain their change of heart with Amiga DOS 4.
The impossibility or extra long timescale of including MP and VM into elate/intent
, demand from the community for OS4, a better home server solution, demand from partners/
customers for a soft-hosted DE only, etc..

AmigaInc. does make software. Operating system software (AmigaOS+AmigaDE). No applications.
And some kind of framework, known as Amiga Component Model which is the foundation
of the whole (is it yet called AmiVerse?).
Even in some sense every OS is an application framework.
And AmigaInc. spreads its own over nearly every computing device.
And, IMHO, it deserves the Amiga name.

Tao makes the OS, Not Amiga.
Tao makes the Java Engine, which apparenty can run on other OS's w/o Elate
Recent News says Koan has done some multi-media or sound engine or module
for intent and this is the main new thing with intent 1.1
What is Amiga working on? They are not making the OS, not making the Java or
multi-media engine(s), so what are they making? The MP and VM module and
some applications via non-internal developer?
Is there aything that makes Amiga and it's "communiuty" any different then
just a third party developer of ElateOS, intent java, koan audio, etc.?
Anyone have a price on intent 1.1 for linux or windows? Where can I buy it from
if I don't want to go thru Amiga? Can intent on the AmigaDE SDK be run on linux
or windows with out Elate?
Will Amiga MP and VM libraries/modules/devices be included in future versions
of Elate and intent from Tao or other companies like Embedix?
It's pretty clear that the OS company is Tao, that the Java engine is even
clearer a Tao product.

In reply to Comment 7 (3seas):
You are correct, and this is what the PDA manufacturers are looking for the TAO bits, when McEwen claims a win for AmigaDE, what he's really saying is the TAO java engine has been chosen for it's small footprint for the device in question, and since AmigaDE includes it you could claim it's AmigaDE compatible. AmigaDE is nothing but rebadged TAO technology, that any third party can buy directly from TAO and eliminate the middle man (AMIGA, Inc.).

If I was only rebadging Tao. Why havent I done it? If only it were so simple. Hey! maybe I could rebadge QNX and call it Phoenix? Oops.... already been done.
Perhaps I should consider calling up Amiga or Tao, or their partners to find out why, specifically, I am still anonymous and why they are profitable and well respected companies who have partnered with substantial and well respected entities.

If only you were smart enough to know the difference between what Phoenix is or isn't, as in 'it isn't a company, it's a developer consortium, and hasn't branded anything nor is it intended to, ever',
and what Amiga Inc. is or isn't, as in 'it isn't profitable and well-respected'.

What I want to know is what Amiga Inc. couldn't have said this. Maybe make a site that says what *exactly* they do, what they hope to do, what their parteners are doing etc.
