Kenny Marx wrote: AmiSoft, the company who was due to release the first ever USB board for the Amiga, has closed its doors for the last time. As of Friday 25th May, Amisoft will cease all operations. Although things did look promising a while back, Amisoft can no longer generate a profit it its current state. A costly court battle with another company hit Amisoft hard, couple this with recent poor figures in the Amiga sales market, and you can see that there were a lot of factors which determined our future, whether we liked it or not. Amisoft was in operation from 1989, selling both hardware and software.

For more information and a press release, email buyout@the-computer.co.uk or try www.amisoft.co.uk, but hurry, the site will be down very soon. Goodbye.

It's sad to see another bit of Amiga hardware go. On the bright side of things, AmigaOne boards have USB ports. If I remember, most of the other boards/systems that have yet to be released support USB as well.

Don't quote me, but I think the A1 was going to use a PCI card for
USB. Hopefully it wasn't the card these guys were working on.

In reply to Comment 3 (Dude):
It depends on the A1 design. This image of the A1 prototype has USB headers located near the bottom center just after the PCI slots.

Here's another pic of the A1 by itself but you can see the USB connectors on the back in a slot. If you look at the side you can see two white cords circling around to where the USB Headers are located on the other picture of the board.

From seeing the A1 at the Kickstart show on Saturday, the USB ports are NOT on a PCI card. They are on a backplate that sits in the tower backplane, however this then connects (via those white leads) to a socket on the motherboard. I suspect this solution is the most inexpensive way to add USB for those of us with Power/Elbox/Eyetech compatable boxes.

In reply to Comment 3 (Dude):
USB and UDMA IDE are onboard. Sound and Firewire will be on a PCI card. (Soundblaster Live! and som standard Firewire PCI card)
Can't remember if basic USB support (mouse keyboard) will be provided with AmigaOS4.0 or with AOS4.2.

There's no other USB expansion planned that i've heard of, so I wonder what will happen to the unified USB API initiative. Can anyone comment on this?

Ooops! Looks like school has ended and they've let the little kiddies out!
Shame about the USB ... wonder if they would be genourous to the community and donate what they have done to the public domain ?

Right, so people with lotsa money needn't be upset, they can always buy $$$ worth of amiga hardware just to get USB.
