Quality of textures is very low in Payback.

In reply to Comment 2 (Hugob):
It might be low quality textures in the 68K version and on the website it looks as though they have cut down the number of colours to make it quicker to view but I am sure that the PPC version will be 24bit and have high res. everything.
Hopefully even have different ads on the sides of buses (a good way to make a bit of income - start adverts in games :)
This is just my idea

I don't know what will be in the final PPC version but now I see screenshots with realistic lights and explosions and very artificial grass and water. It looks strange.

It shoudn't be a problem. There are other graphics format, for example PNG.

Hugob, Pictures on the web is in GIF format, PNG format is not used,
PNG is not a common format on the web, don’t think most browser supports PNG.
If the picture where in better format, Then you deftly will get a slow download on an old 33kbs Modem, not all have an IDSN, ADSL, CABEL you know.

Considering some of what has passed for "commercial software" in the Amiga games arena over the past few years, Payback is very good.
Don't get me wrong, there have been some excellent ports, but as for original "Amiga" games, the pickings are slim. Every Amiga owner (who plays games) with a system spec'd high enough to play this game, should consider buying it. Not a whole lot of game developers still writing programs from the ground up for Amiga.
That being said, I appreciate what companies like "Hyperion" do as well. They bring games to the Amiga that few people (outside of Amiga users) would think Amiga was even capable of running.
I downloaded the 68K Payback demo, and thought it was excellent considering the hardware it is running on.
When the PPC version hits the shelves, I will become a paying customer... as soon as DCE can repair and send my accelerator back anyway.

Payback looks great-- especially with all the textures and effects turned on-- and in high res... The PPC shots look very impressive; I'll be buying a copy

PNG is the standard for lossless compressed pictures, all browsers support it since several years.

PNG...some earlier versions of Netscape 4 hate it, as well as some earlier versions of IE4. I know there's a png datatype, so amiga supporting it is not an issue, unless someone didn't install the right datatypes!

Where did the discussion PNG/webbrowsers come from? I'm sure it should be about if PNG images can be used as textures? Just my $0.02

In reply to Comment 14 (Syke):
The problem is that the screenshots are in .gif format - the worst format for in-game screenshots unless the game is running in 8-bit colour.
.png format is a very common format, and supported in most browsers (and all modern browsers). It gives lossless 24-bit colour quality in near .gif image sizes.
.jpeg would have been another viable option - better than the .gif in this case.

Hi Kjetil,
Can you name me 2 current graphical browsers which do NOT support PNG? You'll be hard pushed to name even one!
As for file seize, PNG is as good as (if not better) than GIF, depending upon the compression level used.
PNG is, effectivly, the new Web standard for lossless compression of images these days and has been for several years.

In reply to Comment 7 (Kjetil):
All browsers today support PNG. AWeb, iBrowse, Voyager (Yuck..), IE (Yuck) and Netscapes'.
If preview graphics are nice then they're worth waiting for; I think. I agree, though, that the games graphics will be a lot nicer. I think they cut them down for the web.
Have Fun. :)

the new single window feature is unstable....try going to a site that opens up popup windows and then start clicking the different window tabs.....locks up voyager.

In reply to Comment 2 (Hugob):
>>quality of textures is very low in payback.
Thats probably because when I started working with the building
textures payback engine was almost ready and had a fixed 256 col
palette I couldnt change. That meant nomatter what I would have wanted
to use I always had to convert the textures to the payback
palette (which explains the striking color diff. between grass and
buildings.)
Either that or then you just really hate the textures :)
I think the situation will be greatly improved with the ppc update.
It's just not ready and might not yet even have a 16 bit
