Note that they've not even got the card yet...

It's always interesting to read a review of a product when the reviewer hasn't seen a "real" card or even used it. This article speculates about the 450's features and then tells you to read it's earlier review of the old 400 for more information. That's like writing a review of a stealth fighter by saying it's "black with a funny shape" and then asking you to read a manual on an old bi-plane for more information.
Really gripping stuff. Whoever wrote this should go and work for CNN.

In reply to Comment 3 (Darrin):
LOL! Well put indeed :-)
This quote from Anandtech is IMO a bit stupid:
"The G550 does have a custom made T&L engine; it is a programmable RISC engine that is really only useful for one T&L function which is Matrix Pallette Skinning."
The T&L unit is programmable, but they claim that limits its functionality??
Also this one:
"The 3D performance of the card is in the same category as the Radeon VE or the GeForce2 MX200 although even those two should be able to offer greater performance than the G550"
Why? The speculated fill rate is actually about as high as the GeForce 2 MX400, so this only shows that this article is highly speculative.
The truth will be revealed once the board is available. Furthermore, it will still remain to be seen how it will perform on the AmigaOne.
Best regards, Hans-Joerg.

Agreed. The Permidia2 chip is faster in the Amiga environment and the Virge is faster in the Amiga environment both specced against an equally specced winddows and linux pc. Couldn't tell you if it was due to the marvelous Amiga software developers or the incredible drivers.

In reply to Comment 5 (the man in the shadows):
Driver development, quite clearly.
The Permedia 2 driver on Amiga is much better than its Windows counterpart.
We are confident we can do the same for the Matrox G550 driver.
Correction: we *know* we can do better.
That's all we can say at the moment.

Maybe they (Amiga Inc.) are making use of Headcasting in the upcoming AmigaOS4.x...? :)

Quote from Matrox site...
"enhance business and personal communication with a lifelike 3d model of your head"
As much as I like the Matrox hardware, its a bit of a worry that their main selling point on this card is the ability to project the image of a disembodied head

In reply to Comment 12 (David Shipman):
That's marketing... The Matrix Palette Skinning can be applied to any sort of skeletal animation...
Which brings up the notion of using a skeleton instead of a disembodied head :-)

What about Matrox producing a card for the AmigaOne that projects a holographic image of Jennifer Lopez which can give good head? I'll buy that for a dollar :)

Mariah Carey is nasty, agreed, but I have seen some pretty nice pictures of Jennifer Lopez recently, and I wouldn't say no.
Of course I can think of other lasses that I would choose over her, but in the end it is all pretty academic... :(

What, like.....as long is it has orrifices? ;)
Anyway, weren't Matrox touting that exact reason for the G800 (or was that just a spoof and me being blind), where it could fill in the missing detail and give you a more realistic, erm, view :)

Hey, I remember reading something about Matrox realeasing a less performant card this summer, and that they said they'd be 3D kings on the begining of 2002.
WHY PEOPLE ALWAYS EAT TOO MUCH CHEESE DAMET ??????????

Why the big deal regarding Matrox?
I mean surely if the AmigaOne comes with an AGP slot and a 3D API, it does not matter which card is in the slot?
When I get my new Amiga cant I take the GEForceII out of my PC and whack it into my Amiga?? (as long as Ami3D/Mesa/Whatever supports it).
On another point, I still at this stage hear of no "must-have" features on the new Amiga (hopefully its because I havent signed an NDA!). There needs to be something 'cool' developed that immediately uses the Firewire interface for perhaps Video editing and/or Music (new Midi standard?) . Something which gives an Amiga using Internet owner/sound engineer/graphics artist tools they always wanted.
This can only be achieved through networking with professionals in these areas, i.e if a few musicians from a respected organisation/production house were asked what THEY would like to see in a new Amiga than they themselves would keep a shadowy eye on Amiga development and be more inclined to support it if they themsleves have played a part in the development of APi's, Hardware etc....

Theoretically.

Sure, as long as you don't expect it to actually do anything.
> (as long as Ami3D/Mesa/Whatever supports it).
Which it won't, because the documentation needed to support it is not available.
The docs for Matrox is. That's what the big deal is.

Because they are done by nVidia themselves, that's why.

The BeOS drivers then? Can't recall right now, but are they also done by nVidia?
