In an article titled Great ideas, bad timing, CNN talks about the Amiga's past, and says: Surprise: The Amiga isn't dead... technically. Although Commodore is defunct, an Australian company called Amiga Inc. is still updating the Amiga operating system and has created specs in hopes of finding friendly manufacturers to release the first new Amiga hardware in six years. A small but loyal fan base of Amiga nuts is holding its breath. Link submitted by John Block.

Hmmm... this doesn't sound like CNN quality news at all. There's even a mixup with the use of bits and bytes. Surely a computer-journalist would understand such basics...?

>Australia
First the press said that AMIGA Inc is from St Louis. Because CNN cann't find the address of AMIGA Inc in St Louis, they fly 15 thousand miles to interview "AMIGA Inc" hanging around with KOALA! :-)
Perhaps AMIGA should put a large banner on its website:
"WE ARE IN SNOQUALMIE, WA, USA!", complete with maps.

Well, at least they mention that Amiga is still alive.
Microsoft has on they're site that Amiga is now dead and released a Linux operating systme (or whatever) in 2000. This is somewhere in the Microsoft site, in a glossary like thing that I wasn't patient enouph to look.

I'd suspect that a town name of Snoqualmie just SOUNDS too much like an Austrailian town! Heck, the newcasters in this state even have problems pronouncing the name! Oh, I LIVE in this state in another Austrailian sounding town called Walla Walla!

Well - AS an Australian, I was motivated to send an Email to
Derek Slator (Exec Editor) dslater@cio.com
in an attempt to set the record straight!
I went on to say that the only current Australian connection
was in the development of an Emulator!
Wonder if they can MESS THAT UP?
(most likely they can!)

Pretty bad journalism......but if a journalist knows so little, what does that
say about computer-users...who buy computers......??? Or how much of the
stuff we read that we don't know about is really as well researched as
this last piece about amiga????

Perhaps AMIGA Inc should release a Free Windows + Linux game to the press with a title: "Where in the world is AMIGA HQ"? (A new version of "Carmen Sandiego")
If this does not work, perhaps a picture book with "FIND WALDO" style. :-)
>Australian name:
Wollongong System is a former Australian Network company!

This is just typical of the "factual" reports that CNN provide on a daily basis. It also shows why Iraq lost so badly in the Gulf War as this indicates the quality of the information CNN provided to them under the guise of "freedom of speach". Hell, based on CNN reports Sadam probably thought the allies were going to attack from Iran :)
CNN sucks. Thank god for "BBC America" and the BBC World News program... a brave attempt to provide the USA with an honest and reliable news service.

I remember watching one CNN "World" report where there was a total of 8 stories - 6 were in the USA, one was about migrating geese in Canada and the final story was about a BA pilot who claimed to have seen a UFO while trying to land at Heathrow Airport (That's in London for any CNN viewers and not Australia). Now I know for a fact that there was at least one major famine going on in the world, several civil wars, a couple of national wars, some scientific breakthoughs, etc.
Still, the next day one report included a talking duck in Mexico... :)

maybe Amiga Inc should move to Australia,
They will double the amount of cash they have in just moving.
US$100,000.00 gets you a good programmer in the US. US$50,00.00
(~AUD$100,000.00 )gets you a top of line programmer In Australia.
And our beer and pizza's is the best you will find any where in the world :)

AMIGA Inc is NOT listed on Yellow Pages and located in a secret hidden place.
No wonder CNN, Local Washington area BBB & Chamber of Commerce cann't find AMIGA Inc. If you want to find AMIGA HQ, look behind the waterfalls! :-)

I wrote to them. Perhaps if enough people write them a reposting is possible by them, though I wouldn't hold MY breath for it. Anyway, writing them is a good idea to let them know you're not pleased with that bad research. I wonder how much money M$ paid to have them screw up so badly? Hehe.

In reply to Comment 21 (Michael Taylor):
You people are worse than the people who made the mistake in the article. Not one of you
dolts has mentioned the fact that CNN DID NOT WRITE THE ARTICLE!
IT'S FROM CIO.COM, PART OF IDG.NET (Derek Slater and Joe Sullivan are not CNN.com reporters)
Don't bother the people at CNN.com, this type of story comes through an automated publishing system
that grabs the stories from a data feed. Even if CNN.com wants to fix the mistake, it is not within their power to do so, as they did not write the article.
Few of you seem to realize that most of the news on
web sites comes from wire sources (Reuters, API) and to determine the news source for the piece, you look at the dateline,
which is the beginning of the article wrapped by parentheses. In this case, the
dateline for the story reads clearly (IDG).
Direct your request for a correction to CIO.com: http://www2.cio.com/feedback/
Then, learn to read a news article properly. The only thing CNN.com can do about it is keep it in mind whenever their contract with IDG runs out. That's it.
I hope none of you are police or judges; innocent people would fry because of your inability to take in the information in a simple feature article.

Do take a deep breath and calm down there old chap!
Fear not, when I emailed to correct the mistakes, I emailed the AUTHORS of the article (for their email addresses are clearly stated in teh article) and CIO themselves at their feedback address, also clearly stated.
So do calm down and don`t assume, OK?

In reply to Comment 22 (Hippononymous):
As you can clearly see from the link above, the news site (and I use the word "news" in it's loosest sense here) REPORTING this story is CNN. The fact that those responsible for writing the article are not paid employees doesn't matter - a news service is resposible for the accuracy of the information they deliver.
Thus, if CNN decide to use an article on THEIR website then THEY are reporting it and THEY are responsible for the comments (This is why Newspaper editors sometimes end up in jail). Informing CNN that an news report in their website is OK - next time they might check their sources a bit better, they may print a correction or they may decide not to use people who know nothing about the subject they are writing about.

Probably the journalist see AMIGA DE specs and think that AMIGA DE is similar to Australian Platypus :-)
AMIGA DE: The same applications run on top of LINUX, Windows, and PDA without modification / re-compilation. It is possible to run on top of both PowerPC + X86 inside a single system at the same time.
Platypus: Duck's bill, Beaver's Tail, Snake's Venom and lay EGGS (covered with LEATHER)!

After dropping an email to the authors at the wekend, I just received an
email from David Slater (one of the authors which says that a corrected
version has been posted at cio.com and they're working to do the same on the
CNN site.
So although they made some errors, it's encouraging to know that they are
open to corrections and activly follow them through :-)

What kind of "Nuts"?
There are 11 different types of Nuts, from Almond to Walnut.

Perhaps they think that whoever create "Platypus"-like OS must be some sort of "Macadamian Nuts" from Australia!
Any relation to the "Nutty Professor"? :-)

No wonder AMIGA Inc are not listed in phone books of Snoqualmie, WA, USA.
Snoqualmie, WA, is located near Wyalkatchem, WA, Australia:
Wyalkatchem (WA) – Beautiful Place!
This community of about 350 residents in the State’s central wheat belt has been long standing participant in Tidy Towns.
