I phoned with Juergen Haage and can tell you that this rumour - or lie - is total nonsense. I just phoned with Juergen Haage and can tell you that he never did tell something like claimed in the post from "4play". H&P is *not* leaving the Amiga marketplace !!! And OS 4.0 is in no way doomed !!! And "Descent Freespace: The Great War" is even now available for Preorder at H&P !!! This "rumour" - more properly one should not call it a rumour, but a "lie" - was probably started by someone who wanted to damage H&P or Amiga. I suggest that the earlier post by "4play" gets removed. Steffen Haeuser Hyperion Entertainment

Maybe it is not so good to preorder (and pay) if H&P are indeed leaving the market...

Anyway, let's get on to more interesting topics. If H&P have nothing to do with OS4.0 anymore, as Mr Moss has reportedly said, then what is H&P's future business aims?

Sorry for posting this here guys, but I need to get this cleared up.
To the best of my knowledge, H&P are not leaving the Amiga market.
That story was posted to the site, not by me, but by a low-life who thought it
would be funny to completely destroy the site. I, in fact, was en route to a
different part of the country and over 200 miles away from an accessible computer.
That's right, the database is gone, and it was done by the same morons who
continually haunt ANN, Amiga.org, Czech and the other sites with their MorphOS
versus the world bullspit.
We have a backup of the data, but we're debating whether or not to bother putting
it back up, since it's obviously been compromised. In any event, I would have to
start from scratch and dedicate months to writing code to get it back to even
1/10th of what was there. With spitheads like this in the community, I don't know
if I have the drive or desire to do it any more.
It's a case of something great being destroyed by a few bad apples and I don't know
if it matters whether they "win" or not.
We had started a campaign to raise funds to alleviate these problems. Now, Amiga.org
will not be back without your support and that of the companies in the Amiga
community.
To the spitheads who did this. If I find you, I will kill you, cut off your heads and
feed them to the alligators in my back yard. Try me.
Any thoughts on this matter?

Wayne, is there any way we can help on other sites? Namely, maybe archiving old news, etc. maybe > 2 months old in a flat file or something that people can simply download? Thus you only have to restore a far smaller slice of information and yet the news and other info are avail. to the Amiga Community as well. . .
Maybe uploading a '6 month news batch' to Aminet or something? It might mean a lot of work short term but you'd only have to do it once and then never again. . Others of us out there could then put up lha archives for download if people wanted to read these items.
are the items in an exportable format? I'm presuming you still are using MySQL . . .

What about making it a pay per view event ?
That way you could also raise some money to make amiga.org better then ever :-)
Anyway, here's hoping that you will put amiga.org back (IMHO it is (was?) one of

In reply to Comment 12 (kevin orme):
It would be good if Wayne did the MySQL database backups regularly, as a simple
DELETE * from table;
can really mess things up. And once you have access on a box, getting the SQL passwords is easy as they will be littered throughout the PHP code.
With a box of your own, you can set up the tables to be write and read only, but no delete or modify. Make root or another user the only person to be able to delete entries from the table. And use postgresql if possible.
I really feel for you, as you put a lot of work into the site, and so did other people (e.g., the person who did the graphics and icons). To have that ruined by a stupid, misguided, misrepresentative (I must emphasise that) idiot is really sad.
I hope you raise enough to get a box and a colocation account. If you are in the UK, Inweb are good and cheap, and will accept standard mATX cases, not just rackmount cases. Claranet require rackmount cases (up to 4U), but you get unlimited bandwidth for the (high) price.
Hell, if a hundred Amigans put up £10, that would be enough for the box and the colocation at Inweb for a year. You might have to cut down on the graphics though because of the bandwidth restrictions at that price.
Prices in the US will be about the same, but the bandwidth restriction level will be higher, which is good if you are there.
Use FreeBSD or OpenBSD as the hosting platform. These are more secure than the average Linux build, although even that should suffice. There is little difference in the end - better VM in FreeBSD, but bad Java support (which Amiga.org never used, so it isn't a problem). Disable FTP, Telnet, etc, and use only SSH for access and filecopy (scp).

Hey, I forgot to vote on method of death.
I say go for the pay-per-view fireants.
Samface, I would offer my server for amiga.org as well, if it wouldn't cost me £3000+ because of the bandwidth usage for Amiga.org throughout a year!
I suggest Amiga.org migrates a bit to the side - becoming less of a links site (Slashdot for Amigans) and having reviews and proper articles as well. Articles are easy - they are longer story posts, reviews are tougher, as they are long, with loads of pictures of motherboards and cases, etc.
Heh, stick the server on an NTLWorld cable modem, and just block the NTLWorld portscanner hosts with a simple firewall on the box. It is only 128Kbps uplink, but it is cheap. Same goes for any US cable service, if they are not all owned by Microsoft yet. Thing is, you need good burst speeds for a server, even if the overall bandwidth use isn't that high, and cable/dsl will not provide that. You need 1Mbit burst at least...

there are 2 ppc options right now... OS 4 and MOS. If something

Hi all..
As a daily user of Amiga.org, I am sadden by the way the site was treated today.
Wayne Hunt has done a remarkable job at keeping the Amiga community together! This has taken years for him to build Amiga.org to what it is today, only to be crumbled by a pathetic soul! - who'm I don't believe is an Amiga user himself..
I was just wondering if you (Wayne) could "simply" re-install PHP-Nuke and continue from there. I know it's hard to just say goodbye to everything you had built up so far, but I personally as a loyal user of Amiga.org believe that the community will back you up on this, and help you in every way we can! :o)
I think you should contact the police, so that they can make an investigation, and track this m*r*n down!
As for the future of Amiga.org, please don't take this as a personal insult. The hacker was only after the Amiga community itself, not you..
Thank you for your commitment to us after all these years!! - You're like the Petro of the Amiga web!!!
Kind regards,
Benny Brockie

Hack some quilty parties instead, like micro$oft.
Although very sad, it is also interesting to see that someone is willing to

Someone is apparently considering the Amiga-community to be a competitor.

If you can be any help for Wayne, volunteer. Help him get the site back up in a manner that takes some of the stress off of him. Coding talks, bovine-generated organic effluent walks.
Platitudes are nice, but at a time like this, gettin' on the good foot with the PHP code is gonna be a lot more appreciated. Perhaps some of you network security dudes could help him too, like with getting Snort going or something.
As for the rest of you, send the guy a few bux. Help him get the server of his dreams...;')

Here;s how sad things have gotten. Just heard this:
Two guys from <insert name of country here> were slagging my employer on an IRC channel recently. Really going to town. When asked why they were slagging, had they done any business with us, whatnot, they responded "No. It's just fun to do".

In reply to Comment 6 (Wayne Hunt):
Wayne, I'm all for getting the Amiga.org site back up, for years its been the best looking Amiga site (Engish at least, probably any language) out there.
I'm a PHP/mySQL (ASP/SQLServer as well, but lets forget that) programmer, if you need some help, e-mail me.
