David Scheibler compiled a short summary of the Pianeta Amiga 2001 fair, taken from amiga-news.de:
  • H&P showed AmigaOS XL (i.e. MooVid playing two films)
  • VirtualWorks showed the GRex4000D and the Mediator4000 PCI cards (not runing)
  • TitanComputer presented CandyFactoryPro running on a Pegasos computer with MorphOS v0.8
  • there will be a new Italian print magazine called Bitplane
  • Mirko Cippola showed a A1200 with a Mediator1200 with Voodoo, Soundcard and TV card.

This day is one to be remembered.
Pianeta Amiga was the place when, since June 94 and Commodore's bankrupty, we could see a brand new machine (unfortunately I can't write "Amiga machine") with PPC, a very cool OS and all the applications we like to run.
The Pegasos is what we should have had for a very long time. A new PPC mother board, with standard extension capabilities. Moreover, the OS is able to run not only existing 68k or PPC apps but also new ones written especially for the new OS capacities. Both are exactly what the community has been waiting for.
And this marvel hasn't been made by Amiga Inc., still trying to sell their DE ideas to uninterested Amiga fans. No, the Pegasos and Morphos are made by people who kept faith into the Amiga spirit and didn't wait for a contract or some money to start the works.
Long live the Amiga. Long live the Pegasos.

It is a black day since the so-called Amigans in Black pretend to speak on behalf of the Amiga community. We are the Amigans in White (as you know the good guys always wear white) and we await the come of the True New Amiga. The one from Amiga Inc.

I don't know what MorphOS is like but I know that I, with some good guyes, are coding a
stunning software for any operating system. I would like to make it available for
AmigaOS4 but it seems that no people that should be involved in this project want it :((
Where are the dev guides ?
Maybe we'll port it to MorphOS instead of OS4 ?

We're just back from Pianeta Amiga... it was small but veeery interesting. Many exibitors (more than last year), and many cool news. The stand near us featured the Pegasos board running very well, and Mr.Haage sold the first copies of AmigaOS XL. And, btw, we're the only exibitors present since the first edition of PA :)

Can anyone give me some idea as to what Haage & Partner did as part of their AmigaOS XL launch? Did they show a demo, did they let people use it, did they play a video, present comparative figures... what? Did they show both products, just one , or nothing? I'm just curious since I won't have any idea of what they're doing, and they won't attend the UK shows.
Will anyone post an in-depth review of the show? We don't have AmigActive to do it anymore, and those of us that don't speak German are a bit stuck for news.

I even tried the bablfish to read the German comments (no one ever comments in the English section) but (a) there was little concrete news, and (b) reading the babelfish output is an excruciating experience. :)

Well, not quite. In my opinion, saying
"Haage&Partner presented AmigaOS XL running on an 1.4GHz Athlon.
The Amiga software compatibility is said to be very good. For example
there were MooVID playing two movies in two windows at the same time."
is hardly the same thing as saying
"H&P showed AmigaOS XL (i.e. MooVid playing two films)".
I wasn't there, so I can't say which one of the two statements better
describes what actually happened, but I guess we'll know soon enough... ;)

Jurgen Haage was present at the Virtual Works stand and he had a PC running AmigaOS XL.. it was honestly veeeery fast and similar to Amiga, but while Amiga Forever does support AGA and ECS, this one only supports RTG screens :/ I also don't like that they're telling that AmigaOS XL contains a "web browser with java, flash, realaudio" when this browser (Opera) is only present in their QNX cd, and not in the emulated Amiga.

Well, I don't know which CPU did it have, but apart from a scrolling bug (everytime you tried to scroll a MorphOS screen, the computer freezed for one-two seconds), it ran perfectly software like PageStream or Final Writer... finally an Amiga-like *working* piece of hardware. So sad that Amiga Inc. are against this, I think the battle between Pegasos-AmigaOne is already lost, since Pegasos *exists*, and AmigaOne is just smoke.

It was a dev system with a *hell* of serial debug on the serial port.
Each custom chip access(analysing) or "enforcer" like hits cause a lot
output which can cause a temporaly lock.
I think it also outputs each InitResident(every library/device init)
and stuff like LoadSeg so there was a lot runtime traffic which people
haven`t seen.
The cpu which was used in *that* dev system was a slower G3 at 400Mhz..
so there`s a lot footroom left for the current PPCs:-)

Paolo, I don't think AInc are exactly against this, because Merlancia tries to get
OS 4.x running on their Pegasos-design based motherboards (at least they said so).

In fact AmigaOS 4 won't be out that soon, IMHO. In an interview with mr. Haage in iussue 0 of Bitplane, the new italian Amiga magazine, he said that H&P more or less finished its part of the work, but Eyetech is really behind schedule with the HW. So they decided to release AmigaOS XL and Amiathlon (which were sold at Pianeta Amiga as a single bundle with QNX 6.1 and AmigaOS 3.9+ AmigaWriter and Art Effect for 299000ITL, 299DM, more or less 160EUROs) to fill the time gap. But if they need to fill a time gap at the end of october, it is likely that we won't see A1+AOS released for some time, probably...
BTW, I was at Pianeta Amiga, and I saw the bplan Mobo, and I was impressed. Mainly because it actually worked... It seemed an Amiga (a fast one, indeed), only it was powered by a G3 (and a slow one these days...). They were running IsisPPC with video MPEGs at full speed (AVIs displayed with MooVid do not impress anyone, not even an Amiga user :) ) Page Stream, Candy Factory Pro. The new is that they seemed to work. Anyway, I asked the price and I was pleased to hear that they plan to sell the pegasos with G3@350MHz, HD, DVD, RAM, GFX board (either a Matrox G450 or a VooDoo3, which was the one being shown, depending on the user's preferences),Audio card and tower case for just 1000EUROs (950USD). Now the price seems sensible.

Well...MPEGs don't impress anyone, or do you say it was MPEG2 (DVD) or some DivX?
Softcinema will do the job and it would be very interesting to see the speed on G3.

Well, I was impressed by IsisPPC back in 1997 when they played the flow.mpg (Aminet)
on PPC in the WB backdrop (and quite fluidly so)...

I know what you mean. Playing 2 AVIs in MooVID (and this seems to be the only thing people remember about the H&P demo) is hardly impressive. I mean. I can even do eight of them here, at full speed, with Amplifier playing an mp3 at best quality and no skipping. And I only stopped adding more because I ran out of screen real estate...
If you're going to use the old "playing lots of movies at once" ploy, at least do it right! :)

"Audio and Video Interleave".
It's no video, it's no format, compression scheme, it's just a multiplexing system.
AVI uses 2 codecs : 1 for audio, 1 for video.
Some video codec use no compression, like YUV, some use a very tough one (Like MPEG-4).
It's the same for audio : you can use either no compression at all or any kind of compression there is a codec for.
This means that "I can play 2 AVIs simultaneously" is just like "I can play 2 sound at the same sime". If it's 2 WAV or 2 MP3s, it's a completely different story for the CPU.
So it is for AVI. You can have YUV+WAV one way (you need a fast harddrive though), and MPEG-4+MP3 another way. It would also be a completely different story.
You can use YUV for video and MP3 for audio, just choose when you encode your video. It'll still be an AVI file when you finish.
If what MooVID at Pianeta Amiga showed was 2 3ivX movies at a good resolution, it's just fantastic as it proves a high superiority when compared to any of our current amigas.
Since we have no idea what was exactly the format used in these videos, I'll just say it just doesn't prove a goddamn thing.

They were two trailers (Final Fantasy whatever, the other I don't remember), 320*172, and I know I took a look at least at one of them on 040/AGA, with no problem. Quite sad noone showed us the capabilities of this Amiga OS XL, supposing it's something more than just playing two AVIs/MOVs simultaneously.
