Amiga Arena did a quick interview with James Daniels, the author of Payback. A quote from the interview: "I simply cannot afford to continue to develop on the Amiga unless sales improve. :(" The german translation is here.

Well I'm going to buy it now that I'm finishing my studies and I'll be able to play it at a good frame rate (060/W3D). Not much by myself, but James might benefit from all the new PCI boards and their W3D drivers. Let's hope so, I mean he's got the talent and the guts to stay in a dead market, he deserves some reward.

I'm hoping to pick up a copy at the WoASE next weekend. Now all I need is my Amiga in my house again. With the release of the Amithlon etc it might make it much more playable for the 68k version too! :-)

It certainly will be :-)
I played the demo on Amithlon at the Aust Comdex show and it was PERFECTLY smooth
and resonsive on a 1024x768 screen. A real joy to play, MUCH faster than on an 060.
Cheers :-)

Having bought a copy twice, none of which has come through from the firms I can only hope
that another Alive Mediasoft hasnt happened. To be fair the reviews of the latest version
have only just come out and most people wait for that.

The problem with Amiga user is that they are to old
to be intrested in games this days, or at lest be
intrested to bay the games.
Most Amiga users are not games.

In reply to Comment 5 (Kjetil):
Agreed, I'm no gamer.
However, there is nothing more satisfying than the sheer sound of *SPLUT*.
"Come and get me." My opponent cried out standing what looked to be right beside a light pole. Playing with the bus doing figure 8s in the unbuilt track (Little-Indy btw) I got the bus up to full speed. Bearing down from the north through the garages and pits from the area now known as the track within a track he stepped just to the side in hopes to temp fate. The precious sound of *SPLUT* was heard in a very low rumble which made me drop my controller from laughing so hard. This was shortly followed by a blood stain the full length of the screen from the bus I drove at top speed only to crash into a lower restraining wall killing the driver with pancaked cop car and civilian pug gti. Shortly after my opponent saw the charred black remains of the bus flying over the head of where his fate was met over 5 screen lengths away (the time lapse was almost 2 full seconds of hang time)! We laughed about that one for hours. To this day, we still break out in full bore laughter from the mere mention of *SPLUT*. Now you know how the map Little-Indy came about. At that time, there were no weapons, only cars (and buses!).
Excellent work James! By far the best Amiga game I've ever played.

The mistake Daniels made was releasing the demo. Many people
saw it and decided not to buy it. Demos really should only be
for good games as otherwise you're risking the potential
for the buying public to decide for themselves.
Who knows if I would have bought it if my only exposure to it
was a banner ad. The demo certainly changed my mind...

So is payback that good on amithlon? Hmmm, might just have to buy it then. Is there a network option implememnted or planned? its just that you could play something like 8 players using 2 machines, and as the amigaone isn't out yet (if all was going to plan it would be available in the next week or so) Amithlon is the only way I can play it right now, but enough about me!
ps. is there some sort of map editor for payback?

A demo is much better, especially with all the varying h/w these days - at least you get to test the engine to see how it performs on *your* machine... rather than being dissapointed when you pay for the full game.
After playing the demo i couldn't wait to see the PPC version James promised!

In reply to Comment 4 (Dave):
Where did you buy those 2 copies that never arrived? can't it be ordered from the payback website?
Payback isn't aimed at kids, it seems quite adult oriented, And a good agme is a good game, whether its for Kids or adults.

Is there a new demo with ppc and w3d support? The old demo didn't
impress me, in fact - I think - it crashed.

What's "too old" for you ? Most french Amiga users are about 20-25 year old.. and even my dad who's nearly 60 likes to play games anyway.

In reply to Comment 11 (David Scheibler):
Yes, there is a new demo with PPC and W3D support.
If there wasn't a demo, I guarantee 100% I would never have bought
this game, because the subject matter didn't appeal to me. I just
wanted to see what the 3D engine was like; I thought I would play with
it for a few minutes and delete it. But then I found myself
constantly restarting the demo (3 minute time limit, remember) so that
convinced me I had to get the real thing.

So, why Payback wouldn't be a good game?
Even the very early 3-minute teasers forced me to buy the game and I was stuck with 040/25Mhz + AGA that time.
If you have "only" played demo, you don't know what you are missing. For example night levels, rain, different (secret) vehicles...Map editor allows you to model you local world. Maybe even missions could be added in the future?
