California, USA - October 31, 2001 - REBOL Technologies and StreamCast Networks (formerly MusicCity.com) today announced a partnership to create the world's largest peer-to-peer X Internet content network. StreamCast, makers of Morpheus and next generation peer-to-peer content distribution networks, will base Morpheus 2.0 on REBOL's X Internet operating system (IOS) technology to provide interactive programmable content to more than 30 million users by the end of the year. I read some kind of story regarding THIS on
slashdot.........
The story wasn't as sharp, and the string of
commentary was in weirdsville!
Funny! You would expect that another option
of remote services than MS' monopoly would
appeal to the slashdot crowd, but then....
Reminds you of many (apparent) Amiga enthusiasts,
---Really Hard To Satisfy!!!!!
ME? I'm ALL in favour of efficiency!
And NOT having to have 256Mb of main memory!!!!!
Regards,
JK

In reply to Comment 2 (John Klumpp):
Not at all. Slashdot has, since about 6 months after it started, turned into a pile of steaming manure. I have taken to just reading the stories without the commentary because it is full of people that:
1. like to sound like they know something when they do not
2. take the in view ( open source good when Linux oriented bad when not )
3. are script kiddiwinkies
4. bore the living hell out of me
5. put in childish comments just to get attention ( "first post! CmdrTaco sucks!")
6. trolls that long ago gave up irritating the comp.sys.amiga.* newsgroups
Hidden deep in the commentary manure is the odd gem of information - but its hardly worth wading.
If you ( like some ) take it as an indicator of the "real world" opinion on technical matters then you are in for a shock. Instead, treat it with the healthy cynicism it deserves and go shop for mature technical discussion elsewhere.
The world revolveth not around /.
Dave.

Interesting news, and I do wish it made it into the Slashdot article.
It's obvious that Slashdot likes the GPL, so there's no sense whining about reactions... Frankly, as a more BSD (if anything) guy, I *am* suspicious of REBOL and the DE's ability to succeed as content formats. With time, REBOL could be as acceptable a plugin as Java- I'm not sure if the REBOL company is looking to make the language an open standard, however. Such projects _are_ a hard sell to a community that can run Perl or make a C port on their platforms of choice. If you can't "get" the difference between an opened standard (HTML, Java) vs. a proprietary one (PDF, Word, whatever)... sucks to be you, I guess. :} Proprietary standards _are_ quicker money, but only if you can find someone willing to adopt them.
So, anyhow... it's hard to say if StreamCast is looking to create some sort of "executable Internet," or if they're looking to REBOL to take their client crossplatform. It sounds like a bit of both, and having used their Win32 client (which really just ties into the KaZaa network, as far as I can tell), something definitely had to be rewritten. I'm not sure what sort of content they're expecting to propagate, though, beyond the current music-'n'-warez model; if they expect killer REBOL-based services, someone will have to be convinced to write them, and if they're talking about the P2P client morphing through updates to the REBOL applet, that's going to require a centralized server, anyhow. As cool as REBOL may be, I doubt you're going to implement, say, an MPEG4 decoder under it, so if the concept is to enable "streaming" content... REBOL can probably support rapid development of the network layer, but to bring their system crossplatform in any useful form, they'll need decent media players on the clients.
