Some news gathered from several sources attending the show.

A complete Pegasos-based computer system that will be on sale next year will cost approximately 1000 euro (~$900). The motherboards will also be available separately.

Hyperion and Haage & Partner are developing AmigaOS 4 with several other developers. New features include:

  • PPC native Picasso96
  • New Warp3D with "Matrox-, Permedia3- and Radeon1/2-support"
  • Generic PCI-drivers
  • USB-support
  • BlizzardPPC-support evaluated
  • Integrated 68k-emulation
  • PPC datatypes
  • Price: approximately the same as OS3.9
  • Initial release planned for February
Hyperion also told that they've been talking with both Elbox and BPlan and that they want to have versions of AmigaOS 4 for the SharkPPC and Pegasos.

[The original item I posted had some mistakes in it, and since amiga-news.de even took down the article I used as a primary source, I decided to repost the item edited - Teemu] [I merged new article and old comments - CK]

WHAAAAAT!!!! (HAPPY, HAPPY, JOY, JOY.... ;))
Too good to be true.
AmigaDE for Amiga OS already in January 2002?
Runs also on BlizzardPPC cards ?!!
"there will be versions of AmigaOS 4 for the SharkPPC and Pegasos" ???
Naaah, that's it, can not be true, you were just teasing...

Now all the community has to do is to stop flaming the Hyperion crew long enough for them to actually spend some time coding instead of having to continually post on ANN/Amiga.Org/Mailing Lists/etc to defend their honour/squash rumours...

The news haven't been confirmed from official sources yet, there could be misunderstandings, wrong translations (my deutsch isn't perfect :) etc. So, don't start holding your breath just yet.

"So, don't start holding your breath just yet."
Do not worry, I'm not going to.
But if those news get confirmed, the clouds in the Amiga sky seem a little bit thinner. =)

In reply to Comment 3 (Teemu I. Yliselä):
It looks like Hyperion doesn't care about hardware, they do OS4 for
the hardware which is available. So they start with CybPPC and
BlizzPPC. If there will be AmigaOne then they will port it, if
there will be SharkPPC then they will port it, if there will be
Pegasos then they try to port it.

In reply to Comment 6 (David Scheibler):
A commendable attitude from Hyperion... now let's get behind them on this.
It amazed me earlier in the year how the rift between Hyperion and Elbox made people think that WarpOS would never appear on the Mediator. However, a few months later a truce was signed and now the Hyperion team are regulars on the Mediator mailing list assisting users with WarpOS questions.
It's professional business practices such as this that seem to slip by without comment. Hyperion have shown that they can be willing to bury the hatchet in order to move on yet people still try and throw muck in their direction.
There's a lession to be learned here for all the remaining companies in the Amiga market... but for some I feel "further education" is a lost cause.

Some points are not correct (According to Ben's presentation):
- It is planned to finish it in February 2002
- There will be no AmigaDE in OS4.0 but in a later update

An operative sistem will be created, BETATESTED and DELIVERED in 3-4 months???
Ok. Good luck. For MArch I will have my Pegasos with a real functional operative system.

>"there will be versions of AmigaOS 4 for the SharkPPC and Pegasos" ???
This is not entirely true: What Ben said is that they will support as much PPC hardware as possible (and if the performance is satisfying)
They WANT to support the Pegasos although some ppl said they would prevent the Pegasos to run AmigaOS4.0
A version of AmigaOS4.0 for the SharkPPC is not really a supprise since Elbox an AmigaInc have an agreement for AmigaOS4 supporting AmigaOS according to this pressrelease of Elbox and AmigaInc:
11 April 2001
"Amiga Inc and Elbox working together for Amiga OS 4.0 and beyond"

<laire> they can buy the HW like every user..we can't stop that
<_4pLaY_> Hmm okei! but will you try to stop them from making OS4 for it?
<laire> what users do with their systems is their problem.
So it seems there WILL be OS4 on Pegasos also! ohh whell now only Hyperion knows 100% for sure.

Yeah, I know it is pricey and yeah, that would make it not worthwhile. :(
Surely there is no current apps that could use it but I think something like Realsoft3D would benefit from such a beast and perhaps some non-linear video editing tools, in future.
Imagine how cool it would be to arrange some rendering demos in some conventions with such beasts...
Have anyone heard about those PPC accelerators that were supposed to be made by Microcode Solutions?
Last I've heard is:
June 9th, 2001 - Today, Microcode Solutions received our first working prototype PowerPC board. This concludes nearly 4 months worth of design and negotiations.
The board plugs into your PC, Amiga, or any other PCI based machine, and uses a high speed PowerPC processor with two RAM sockets, allowing up to 1GB of RAM to be placed on the board!

Believe me, you could make your own "beast" as well, using the pegasos.. pegasos
and MOS is able to work as a big cluster system, conected via firewire..
Thomas Knäbel told that iit is possible to conect as many pegasos via firewire as you want
and MOS ssupport this! Think about 10 Pegasos all equipped with a dual G4 Board *hehe*
That is what I would call aa beast.. OK must be verry expensive.. but this would be relly nice! *g*
So in future , there are Lan Parties not only for playing but for cluster rendering or something else :-))))

Listen they had to make it do all this stuff becasue they wouldnt be able to sell at least 60k oses. Now as asr as to say hey they just started . How dumb are you . They have been working on this alot longer . This is going to be a bigger change then from 3.0 to 3.9.My GOD some people in the community still dont listen and yet jump ship or belive in the pc way of things. One wonders why they belive in what they belive. The answer is simple they dont study the true acts about system spec and archtiecture. Then they or other of their kind blast the people that are making os 4.0 when they were ask to make the os. Dam these idiots are what cause the woes of society on a whole. I sometimes wonder maybe they should have been crammed into the two towers when they went down. %^)

Hi,
this is not OS 3.9 being ported but the first step of the OS evolution to the PPC.
Basicly it's a new Exec for PPC with a fast JIT 68k emulator for old 68k apps.
The graphic system will rely on a native version of Picasso 96.

About Blizzard PPC : we are definitely considering making OS 4.0 for BlizzardPPC. This makes sense according to the number of BlizzarPPC actually running out there and we see no reason to exclude this hardware.

If os4 is ported to sharkppc, pegaso, amione and every ppc hardware then hyperion will gain bigger user base for os4 so morphos team will have to do the same to wide-up their compatible hardware.
Well i believe that this is what we were dreaming of,a freedom of choice to choose the hardware you like without loosing your preffered os or have both of them and see which is more powerfull!
Well i fell more confident in hyperion as they seem very open to support every amiga-like attempt throught os4 and but do they have the time and resources to develop os4,ported to different hardware, develop games, bugfixing support to users and keep developing all their projects?I wish them my best and i will support them by buying their games for start

When we examine the philosopy of microsoft there is a lot of good in
it.
There's idealism about empowerment and the spread of
computers as a tool for the individual.
These people see themselves as changing the world and making a
difference.
There's a disconnect between people who are trying to make cool
software and business practices.
When we look at reported Microsoft employment practices that
disconnect becomes clearer
Anyhow, Microsoft are putting money into the pocket of a localish

I never said MorphOS had no JIT, I said the benchmarks I was presenting were taken from a system running the MorphOS interpreter and that the H&P interpreter yielded the same results.
AFAIK the MorphOS JIT is not publicly available otherwise we would have used that as a benchmark.
