From Amiga Support Network: "New SDK Updates have been posted in the SDK Updates section of the site. Also, SDK Updates and all other web-only downloads are now resumable. To take advantage of this feature, you must have a browser or download manager that supports HTTP Resume (Getright, GoZilla!, Caitoo, etc)."

You forgot to mention, these are BETA updates yet again, so only those who have signed NDAs have access to them.

Yep, noticed it (since I haven't signed an NDA...). Unfortunately it wasn't stated on the amigadev news page.

In reply to Comment 2 (Teemu I. Yliselä):
It never is. :(
They will do the same as with the last upgrade: take it to a final beta, then instead of actually releasing the free update, they will move to the next revision beta, thus making sure that no updates are released to anyone who hasn't signed an NDA.
Since this was never stated in the original manual or adverts, it makes a mockery of the entire process. This is a long standing issue which Amiga Inc have prevaricated over for at least half a year. I wonder what excuses they'll come up with this time. (Last time they said they had no control over the updates- ???)
Does anyone know if the 1.2 SDK works with any current Linux distro?

RE: Linux distro.
I would prefer it if a simple requirements list is offered somewhere.
I run Linux, but not any particular distro (ie. it's completely
custom). So statements like, works with Redhat 6.2 or whatever
don't mean a great deal to me.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who feels this way. Don't bother trying to email asking anyone at Amiga about it, because they won't even reply to you.
Anyone have any word on what this patch is supposed to do?

Go to http://java.sun.com and download _1.3_ for Linux. It's free, it works, it's not in beta, it's not several years out of date like 1.2 is, and you don't need to sign any NDA.

this has nothing to do with amiga. it's an intent update.

was removed from the demos, for those of you who like

I didn't think he meant JDK, but the AmigaDE SDK1.2. And so what if you need to sign a NDA? It's not like the world will go under. An NDA is useful to protect IP and SW from getting in the "wrong" hands.

He knew perfectly well what I meant. He was just acting the smartass.

But, and this is the crucial bit, we should have been informed of the need to sign an NDA (before we were going to be allowed any updates) PRIOR to purchase. However, this was not the case, as you don't find out about the NDA restriction until after you sign in with your SDK login, which you can only get after you have purchased the product in the first place. See?
Even now, when there's all the fuss about the new "upgrade" there is no mention of the NDA requirement until you actually try and download it. I had a mail exchange with Gary earlier this year where he confirmed that you would NOT be required to sign an NDA to get SDK updates, and yet many months later you still can't get ANY updates if you haven't signed an NDA. That is the sole purpose of keeping the updates in "beta" state.

Actually, I did think you meant the JDK. However, my comments stand.
Incidentally, I have not seen anyone justify why Amiga Inc are using Sun's PersonalJava and not Sun's current J2ME.

#1. TAO's J2PE is faster when comparing the core elements.
#2. J2PE includes a nice subset of Swing components, J2ME has no Swing.
#3. TAO's J2PE is more compatible with the J2SE than the J2ME is simply because of the Swingset and modern Java Applets using Swing components. But then, Applets suck.
#4. J2ME is tied to a micro footprint without much hope for a full desktop Java layer. The J2PE is closer to the J2SE without the overhead.
There are other reasons I could list. I think this is enough though.

What's an SDK login? Somewhere on Amigadev.net I was asked for a number that the SDK was supposed to have generated? Or so I was told. I've never been able to find the thing.

You get the login to access NDA covered parts of the website, it's the same login for amigadev.net, you have to sign an NDA first, of course.

According to Sun's PersonalJava site (http://java.sun.com/products/personaljava/), Tao is simply a "reseller" of PersonalJava. There is nowhere to suggest that it belongs to Tao.
#2. J2PE includes a nice subset of Swing components, J2ME has no Swing.
Ahh, I see :)
>Applets suck.
Very true. I think the initial takeup was just about novelty-value, but now people seem to have moved on to Shockwave.

Slime moves? Let's not get into the personal lives of some of the "The Name" Inc's owners/employees shall we?
BTW, you still have a bit of brown stuff on your nose. ;^)

Amiga release SDK updates : Comment 25 of 27ANN.lu
Posted by Bill Hoggett on 24-Dec-2001 19:25 GMT
In reply to Comment 21 (amigammc):
That's not quite right. When you install the SDK, you get a number which you then have to use to get an activation key off the amigadev site. The first time you do this, you also get a login (mine starts with AD, followed by four digits). This gets you access to the main part of the amigadev site, but it does NOT entitle you to any NDA covered material, such as the updates.
AS far as I'm concerned, the SDK updates are still only available internally, so the announcement about the 1.2 update being released is basically untrue.

I can only speak for the Windows version (1.01) of the SDK. The Developer ID screen should ask you for a 32 digit developer ID string, then you will be asked for the System ID string. If you don't have the Amiga developer ID you should obtain it from: http://www.amigadev.net/register
