It seems I cannot even be away for 4 days without some sick bastard trying to post crap on ANN and ruin it for everyone. Sometimes, I really wonder if it's worth the time, money and effort to keep the site going.

Quick! Christian needs another vote of confidence! YES! It's worth it. As long as ANN is here it will always be my homepage on every browser I use. Don't stop, you ARE appreciated! Even in the face of recent garbage posts, even when the comments reach 250+ and 99% are argument, yes, even then.

I think ANN is important to the Amiga community, and I appreciate it a great deal. It is one of the last mechanisms that the community can talk and shout at each other. A community with no means to communicate is no community at all!

Did I miss something on ANN? Was it hacked or something? Well it seems I'm not sure what this is a response to, however, it does seem like we're all suffering from some kind of anxiety here. Someone should do some phsyco analysis on the typical Amiga fanatic as this seems to be a real stressful time for us. There's been so many "heated" debates, so much distrust, so many hacks and attacks, so much destruction to the community; this can only mean one thing: things are changing! The wait has been so long for that guiding light, we've been stuck in the dark for so long we're fighting against ourselves. It's sad to say the least.
All I can say to Wayne or Christian is to atleast wait and see what the new year brings. Things are changing and this will be a tough time for everyone I think. Many will come to realize that their trusted hardware they've been using for years and years might need to be set aside and replaced with something new. To say that emotions run high is an understatement considering some of the "debates" going on the forums these days. Well, I just hope it doesn't rip us all apart. That's what I fear most. Let's hope understanding and tolerance prevails. If peace is possible in Afghanistan, I'm sure it's possible on the Amiga forums. :-)

ANN?
Now, who's the dickhead?
Please, do myself and pretty much everybody else here a big favour, and just go away. Seeing how you don't like the site, or my running the site, why don't you just go f*ck yourself and never return here?

One thing that always amazes me is the half-twits who go around bashing web sites yet being a narcotic hypocrit and reading every bit of the site involved in the bashing. I think once people find out who is posting the tripe or hacking the web sites everyone grabs a pitch fork and make the person responsible "holy".
Haven't had a public lynching in decades, I think it's time to reinstate the time honored tradition for just this one prick.
Keep up the great work Christian.

Look at the great ann.lu go!
While it is a shame that it was hacked, after the crap Watyne received it refreshing to note how the an.lu'ers can come together..... not.
I really don't know why these guys run Amiga websites, considering the fact that most Amigans' seem to be pretty pathetic compared to the 'Gods' we were years back. Personally, I'd like to see maybe more Morph/AROS stuuf in the mix, might draw a more mature crowd.

You can't filter IP addresses with this person. If you trace the IP addresses they go all over the world. He uses a back door method to get from place to place. It's hard to filter out a public library or an internet cafe. Your best bet is just to find him and punish him accordingly. If I remember correctly there are internet laws describing defacing and hacking. One thing I'm curious about is why this script kiddie isn't making the attempt on hyperion or other companies. He's just set on places that allow for public postings and such. So why hasn't he attacked amiga-news.de? And why did he attack Amiga.com or Eyetech? Why is this person infatuated with aids and gay porn? Who knows, who cares. We know this person did it, now it's time to bring them to the bench to be incarcerated for their crimes.

I think it's ABOUT TIME to make ann.lu available only to registered users now on. I like your (Christian) idea of letting everyone share their comments even anonymously, but most of the anon comments in recent weeks are really so lowish and provocative that we simply can't let that go out of control. It's like watching children in a kindergarden.. they go wacko if no one is present (adult).
I still occasionally see well written anon comments, but they are becoming more rare all the time.
Stop those kids before they do more damage!

Sure, we all know that, but most of the time people cause trouble because it's easy to do so. Make them put some effort into it and you will see that there is less trouble caused.
With registered accounts, a poster who violates sertain posting rules can have their account shut down. So even if things get out of hand at some point it's possible to clamp down and calm the situation if you need to.

Hi Christian
Please keep ANN.LU online. It is one of my favourite sites (as Amiga.org) and I can see that alot of people thinks same here.
It's probably just the same scriptkiddies that did Amiga.org, Amiga, and Eyetech. Maybe they couldn't hack your site (as it's not PHP based?). It's probably only one or two people trying to take all the news sites down, can't see their reason to do it though? To kill the remaining Amiga community maybe but why would that be fun...?
Please keep ANN as it's a great site for our community.
Best regards
And happy new year to you and your family.

The following was posted in part, to usenet. Though directed at
usenet, I'm sure the same mindset applies here.
Not posting who I am because this party has shown they hit on those who
respond (No Duh! given the following)
Also another Usenet poster suggested www.web-police.org
Consider how this thread and the following suggest this "problem" is
thanking you all:
From nobody@nym.alias.net 27 Dec 2001 13:30:02 -0000
From: autoresponder <nobody@nym.alias.net>
*** IF YOU ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT ANNOYING USENET USERS
If you are angered by someone's postings on usenet and would like to
see that person's account terminated, first consider this: Given the
size of usenet, it is simply not possible to prevent a particular
person from posting articles. Moreover, someone who deliberately
posts offensive or annoying material to a newsgroup may be doing it
specifically to get a reaction out of people. Canceling such people's
E-mail accounts typically has two effects: First it tends to make
them quite gleeful, as usenet trollers enjoy both the attention an
account closing gives them and the fact that they can gloat over
failed attempts to "censor" them. Second, closing accounts drives
abusers to post from more and different addresses, making their trolls
far more difficult to delete or ignore in an automated fashion.
If some juvenile brat is disrupting a newsgroup you subscribe to with
posts specifically designed to annoy people and draw flames, the best
thing you can do is to ignore those posts and not give the troller the
satisfaction of seeing a response. Fortunately, through a mechanism
called killfiles, many news readers can automatically delete
undesirable articles before you even have to look at them. For more
information on killfiles, you can consult the killfile FAQ at
http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/hypertext/faq/usenet/killfile-faq/faq.html.

I would suggest that people like this want attention. I would shut off the anonymous posting option for news. If someone has a problem posting their name and confirmed email, they likely are up to no good. It closes that route.

Christian, it *is* worth it. "Amiga Network News" is one of today's most important public information resources for the AmigaOS communities. I think I speak for the behalf of most Amiga users when I say that "Amiga Network News" is a service that should be treasured by everyone of us. Unfortunatly to say, everyone is not interested in respecting the time, money and energy you and the rest of the staff put into "Amiga Network News". That's why I think the unmoderated postings should require a registration of some kind (posters don't have to reveal personal information details to anyone but "ANN"). Anyone seeing the tremendous value of "ANN" shouldn't have any problems complying to any rules like these.
Please keep up the *excellent* work and have a Happy New Year!
