ANN is a Amiga News site. A lot of ANN users complain about recent posts that have nothing to do with news. In the last weeks I had to delete a lot of these posts. I will even go further to avoid any "f#@& xxx" "XOS is better than YOS" "where can I find blablabla posts". I encourage you to post real news and to never answer to any starting flamewar. ANN success is thanks to you guys so help us to keep it clean.

While I agree that it is a good idea to keep bad language under control, I think that operating system debates are perfectly valid for an Amiga news sites. Over the past few months - inbetween the unconstructive criticism - there have been some great in-depth debates about current issues, including the future of operating systems. I hope this type of discussion won't be squashed, I'd argue that it is such debate that has made ANN great.

True, but when was the last time you saw an OS debate that was civilized? They always turn into flame wars, mostly because the discussions are based mostly on insulting individuals rather then technical merits. I doubt anyone would object to a real discussion on the matter, but I've yet to see such a discussion.

What, you think those anonymous posters insulting anyone and everyone in their way don't have an informed, well thought out opinion? ;-) I'm sure they know it all, they just CHOOSE to act like rotten little brats to get their point across. :-)

We won't discard ANY Amiga News. Even if I have my own opinions I have never deleted a post that was not particularly concerning the Amiga. I think everyone prefers having to read news about Amiga, Morphos, Amithlon, PPC, general related Amiga news ... than reading users requests or users flamewars.

Even if some discussions can be productive the one we got lately were always destructive. The worse is when users flamewars finish with Amiga developpers fighting in public. I recommend you to check moobunny for having such discussions. I'am sorry that it does not work well here :(

Christian, please stop anonymous posting. I see no reason why you wouldn't want to reveal your identity if you're serious about your business at "Amiga Network News".

Hiya folks.
Firstly I'll just say that I think all these msg's and all the
nasty stuff that is being thrown around is childish, irritating and
above all un-helpful.
Secondly - is it not possible to make it so that you can't do
anonymous posts? Something along the lines of a.orgs Login stuff (but
sequre!!! ;} ).
Ok, so some would say that this restricts the right of free-speach,
but on the whole it may just cut down these abusive mails.
Just a thought. (painful! :)
Hope everyone had a great New Year - I certainly did ;-)

** My original post seems to have dissapeared... SO I'm reposting it here.
** Sorry if it appears twice.
Thanks for re-enforcing Peter's (comment #12) views on anonymous posters.
However, if forcing user accounts is not possible, and banning an IP address is out of the question, you might want to consider IP labeling. When a post originates from a particular IP address range (with a history of flame bait type posts) have a disclaimer inserted into the message body declairing that it's probably flame bait and should be ignored. This we we get to read everyone's posts without worry of censorship, yet flame wars may be lessened.

The key here is not that it would limit free speech, but that it would limit certian children's ability to hide from the consequences of their choice of speech.

I'm inclined to agree regarding removing anonymous posting and starting a login based system.
Would it also be possible to have some moderators prowling the comments with the ability to delete/edit posts and possible ban a user for a limited time, say up to a week?
I've been a moderator of a number of boards for about 3 years now, while I'm not looking to moderate another site, I believe it would solve the problems we have all been having.
Thoughts anyone?

But non-anonymous posting doesn't ensure higher-quality debates - just
look at all those jackasses lurking at the heise.de comments section...

That is why we need a Slashdot-style moderation system, where troll accounts get moderated down to -1 default posting level, and informative posts go up. We could them just look at a story at +1 default posting level, and avoid most of the trolls. Trolls would have to reregister or put up with their -1 posting level.
I imagine a MorphOS/AmigaOS warfest would result in interesting moderations, however...

I like all sorts of news on these site, not just Amiga news.
Computer news in general is good, especially stuff about how M$ is getting sued or what new chips are being produced.
Just about all computer/technology news can relate to Amiga in one way or another. Especially now since Amiga is trying to
be an all-devices juggernaut.
Heck, if you can find an article about how Newtek has improved their recipe for Cinnimon Cats, post that too. :-D

A Perl script on the server can look for any of a list of bad words
and simply not post the message if these are found.
That would cut out a great deal of offensive material.
I can't see any reason to use bad language when discussing computers.

My vote is to ban anonymous postings and to include registration/login in order to post. I'm sure that anyone half serious about the Amiga wouldn't mind a one-off registration (certainly wouldn't bother me). This should get rid of the worst offenders unless they really have got so little going on in their lives that constant re-registration excites them. The site can be left open in order to read info. without the need to register.

Hi y'all ;-)
Just to follow up on my early post (14) (never would have thought so
many people would agree with me!! ;-) : the only forseeable problems
with log-in stuff is a. More work for the site owners - well,
initially at least - to get it all set up. once up it'd run easy
enough. and b. youd have to find the right sort of code to do it - as
we all know from amiga.orgs unforunate hacks the php nuke isnt a good
thing to use so something that IS would have to be used. I have no
knowledge of that stuff whatsoever though so I cant recommend
anything. and the website coders may'nt want to go this route anyway!
Btw - can I just say that I now use ann.lu as my FIRST port of call
for news. Not Czech, not a.org (though it was till the b***ards got
it) but ann.lu --> the reason? loads fast, has nice consise news
bits and isnt flooded with ads ;-)

I thought this was an Amiga based site, which in my humble opinion ain't windows softwares and how to protect an IBM PC-clone against attacks on the net.
