If someone makes a new player I will personally MURDER THEM.
Nobody needs a different app for every insignificant sound format.

Ogg Vorbis libraries ported to the Amiga : Comment 10 of 40ANN.lu

The MPEG forum has become quite corrupted. Companies that participated in it to create a universal, free and open standard put some things in there that are patented. They are speaking of "digital rights management" for future versions of MPEG and one of the key player directing the new version used to work on SDMI. There is even something called the MPEG LA or Licencing Authority.
In short people are getting sued over MP3.
Ogg Vorbis is trying to give us back what big companies are taking away. Free, open, universal media formats. We very, very much need this.
It could be better if say a group of organisations all got together to give the format some momentum, or some formal constortium or something was formed in order to better usher in a new format instead of having a million compete, however I do not see anyone else doing something about the situiation. For those of us who like computers, and do not want the MPAA and RIAA running our lives, Ogg Vorbis is probably THE most important format there is right now.
I have not heard the latest release candidate, but others who have reviewed it say it is of excellent quality.

Getting an ogg vorbis player seems to be a good move! The first thing the programmers should do is to make players for all the modplayers out there (delitracker, eagleplayer and so on). If there is no players, nobody will use the format. If there _is_ a player, people know their music/files will be heard.

Ogg Vobis is better than MP3 at the same bitrate. Ogg Vobis can be easily streamed. MP3 cannot (be easily streamed).
Ogg Vobis shall become universal. Free, efficient, and open.
Let's go!

I think Matt's point was that a stand alone player just for

an existing player.

At the same bitrate...but some experts say mp3 has the edge when it comes to high
bitrates like 192 or 256kbit/s iirc. Not sure what you mean by mp3 cannot be streamed
easily - at least the shoutcast streams work on my Amiga just fine.

IIRC, it's mp2 that has an edge over mp3 when it comes to higher bitrates (>=192kbps). You can test it converting the same song in both formats. Mp3 was developed for lower bitrates, which are usually the most useful. I admit not to know much about Ogg Vobis, tough.
Kind regards,
Andrea

that I can grab mp3's from www.musiccity.com ?

There will be!!!! The next version of Morpheus will be done in REBOL and there is REBOL for Amiga!!! YAY!!!
But I think there is some sort of client at the moment that can connect you to servers like Napster or Music City.
Anyhooch Morpheus on Amiga will be great, soon we'll have something proper to get music and movie files from. Mua-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!
erm ... sorry

Personally I nor anyone that I've ever asked can tell
the difference in an mp2 encoded at 128kbs and an mp3
encoded at 128kbs. There is very little difference in
the size of the two as well, and of course the mp2 will
play with much less cpu load.

In reply to Comment 18 (Andrea Maniero):
The sound quality of an mp2 and an mp3 are identical. The only
reason mp3 is here is supposedly smaller file size due to more
compression. In experiments in encoding two identical songs
in both mp2 and mp3 there is very little difference in the filesize,
and in fact I have seen some songs wind up smaller encoded with mp2.
The sound quality is the same, and more compression means more
cpu load to decode...which on some Amigas does mean something.

If you need a list of servers, use the ones found on napigator.com/servers
Regardless, a library for Ogg is awesome. My in dash unit can only play mp3s (and wma but that doesn't mean jack to me) but after talking with the developers they are considering Ogg as well for the next update. Now if I could just get Creative to update their NomadMG to play Ogg.
What the world needs now is a free, open source, streamable audio file with compression as tight as mp3 and sound quality just as good or better... Ogg fits that bill.
Down with the RIAA. Give the music back to the people.

The MakeServerList.rexx script in Amster archive is supposed to do that, retrieve the list of servers from napigator.com.
Unfortunately it has to be tweaked a little bit in order to work. By default it also makes an IP list, but most of the servers are on dynamic IPs, so you have to recreate the list every day before using it.
Here is the fixed version which creates a list of servers with their names and not their IPs: http://off.free.fr/rahh/MakeServerList.rexx
Just run it in a shell (protect +s before if it doesn't work), then copy RAM:Amster.servers to your Amster folder.

I made a little test. I encoded the same song using ogg vorbis (RC3) and mp3. Both at about 56kbps (ABR). And the quality of ogg was waaay better than mp3. So I use ogg for compressing my own music collection. Too bad it's not as popular as mp3 (yet).

They are called CDs and DVDs (or videos if you don't have a DVD player yet).
Fscking hypocritical bastard pirates :-(
Stop being so tight-fisted, stop STEALING and actually BUY the stuff you want.
To illustrate my point, change "music and films" for "the latest Amiga apps and games" and re-read your post.

Stop being hypocrite yourself, tell me you don't have a single CD Copy !
I am a pirate, you are a pirate, we are all pirates!
I personnaly hate MP3, OGG, CD audio, etc...
I think all this is just another crap from our consumer society.
All this is with no savour, no consistency...
But I must admit that all this is usefull and I can't go against the progress.
That's why I try to help the futur to be a bit less worse than it is.
Stop being the instrument of lobbying compagnies. If piracy have growth since recents lasts years, this is just because compagnies prefer win more and more money rather than investing 1 penny in creativity! Selling allways the same shits !
Look what arrive when applying this politic ! Amiga (commodore/gateaway/I forgot all other compagnies sorry) is the best exemple to illustrate all this.
Hummmm !! Anonymous!! no courage of your opinion ! Shut up for ever please and buy your shit!
I hope this mail will not reopen the eternal piracy war. let's close this thread right now

1. Downloading MP3s or Vorbis files isn't, in itself, illegal.
2. Not everything is available on DVD or CD.
3. Copyright infringement is not theft, it's copyright
infringement.
4. It is legal for me to download (via Morpheus, OpenNap, etc)
a copyrighted work that I have already been granted a licence
for.
How does a discussion about OggVorbis/Morpheus/Amster lead to
an anti-piracy post?

Unlike scum like yourself, I believe that if somone is selling something and I would like it,. then I *PAY* for it, I do not STEAL it.
But hey, you just carry on being a thief, and live with the conseq

Hi. :) If you saw my VHS, DVD and CD collection your head would spin. I buy everything I want, I won't settle for some half assed mp3's and movie files, and as far as the stuff I won't buy I won't clutter my hard drive downloading it either, or at least keeping it there if I try it out. Yes, I have a couple dozen mp3's/roms/images ... I like getting some TV shows too, which I can't buy and/or are not on the air anymore. You really don't know what I get to assume they're illegal. I get all kinds of harmless/non-illegal stuff that interests me. File sharing is also a good way for movie makers, musicians, artists, writers etc to distribute samples of their work. Still I can understand where you're coming from. :)

It took me well over 10 years to make me break down and purchase a new music CD/Record. I legitimately own 4 tapes (Lordz of Acid, Iformation Society, Praga kHan, and Jade4u), the rest were nothing but copies of tapes. CDs are a different story, it wasn't until I logged on to Napster for the first time and listened to some of the works done by Paul Oakenfold that I had to run out and buy new music. Imagine my shock when I couldn't find the CD I wanted from Paul Oakenfold. Even worse yet, after contacting the record company (international phone call) it was never even made on CD and they said my best hope for finding it was to download it from Napster! If you can replace the words with piracy, how can you pirate software that never existed?
By the way, thanks to Napster I spent over $200 last year on new music. Thanks to the RIAA and their restrictions on Napster I stopped purchasing new music. See any trend there?

I know many people who went out and bought CD's as a result of hearing
a download from Napster. Also, don't buy into the music industrys bullshit
lies about how Napster was causing them to lose millions. It is an utter,
and it has been pointed out by many people and organizations that the last
year before Napster was shut down, the recording industry had a record year
in sales, although Napster use was at it highest ever.
So let's cut the bullshit and lies, the record industry was losing nothing.
They were making money because of Napster, but it was something that they
didn't control unlike your mind apparently, and they did not like that at all!
Wake up and smell the coffee...

Had he taken the time to read my post, he probably wouldn't have had any problems. However with such a name tied to a well-known web site it did make a perfect "attack" to try and prove their self worth, didn't it? No one is perfect, not even me, but at least I can admit my own faults in a public place with no shame or guilt.
