This is just a friendly reminder that ANN is primarily a news / rumour / discussion site and not just a platform for promotion of other websites / companies / organisations. I would therefore ask people to refrain from posting multiple mentions of their website projects in short timespans. Furthermore, I suggest that commercial entities at least consider running a paid advertisement to announce new products or sell existing ones, instead of just benefitting from ANN's traffic and never investing anything back into the sites that help keep their target audience around...

Yes, I agree about the last part. However, there's not that much happening in the community, if someone has an interesting page, then I'd be happy to see it.

If my referring to double posts, you mean the boingnow site, the creator did apologise for double posting. You could improve your posting system a bit and make it so you can't submit the same information twice. or with the same subject or so.
As for the banners, well, as far as im concerned the current ones are painfully flashy and annoying (kdh). I'll certainly never put banners on my site.

In reply to Comment 4 (Jools):
Boingnow is a new site, so it's certainly ok to announce it. However, other pages announced their creation, then just one week later announce new content, etc., without anything truly unique actually happening on there.
And as for banners, I would really prefer to run TextAds (à la MetaFilter.com), but it would both be difficult convincing advertisers and visitors to support the system.
And as for the financial aspect, I've been running ANN for five years now with comparatively little financial reward. While a few people manage to remain dedicated to a cause for that long without ever requiring any recompensation, I find it difficult to just give, give, give, and get nothing in return.

I've been running my site for 4.5 years with 'NO' Financial reward at all.
I didnt make it to get any financial reward. The only reward i ever need is for people to just enjoy it. And they seem to, which makes me happy :)
I hope you find happiness with your site one day mr kemp.

I take it You have some kind of income.
Then it is okey to be happy only giving.
Or maybe You live on air :)
The point is, if you are poor, then its not as easy
giving stuff away as if you where wealthy.

In reply to Comment 7 (leif):
I have an income, yes. But money doesn't come into my site. Because it is 100% non profit (no ads, etc), my choice of host is much easier, and as such, I have 2 machines which host it for free.

Yes, I agree, that's really annoying to see people even post
a translation of one and the same text a day later. You surely
know who invented this trick. IMHO it's ignorant to misuse a
newssystem as a promotion machine (unless there are REAL news
on a site in question).

come on you can just expect mr kemp to keep shelling out for all the bandwidth and hosting that this site uses. frankly if you're not prepared to pay a 3-5 dolllar donation then you shouldn't be here.
christian has done well to keep ann up for so long, esp as he dosn't use an amiga anymore (i don't either) and those internet technologies are so exciting.
this could just as easily be php news network or rebol news network..
BE GRATEFULL FOR ANN PEOPLE OR B4 U KNOW IT IT WILL BE GONE !

Am I wrong or are you referring to AROS too? Is so, well, I don't get it... It's obvious that people are interested in it, seen the amount of comments it generates each time, and I thought that the more trafic the better for you, because of the banners. Am I wrong?
Moreover, AROS is a free and open project, AmigaOS' related, we don't really promote it (what is there to promote anyway?), we just *talk* about it and when there are relevant news we post them here (this is a news site, after all).
I'd suggets you to put back in place the moderated page.

I'm not referring to AROS. The level of AROS postings is good, not too many mentions, not too few. It should be kept this way, I think.

not to be rude, but isnt it typically american to refer to money in this way?
so therefor, if you've got a problem with running this site and getting nothing in return, perhaps you shouldnt run it? it seems to me there are people willing to take your place

In reply to Comment 15 (gemini):
It would surprise me if anything I did was "typically american"...
And the problem is not that there aren't people who want to take my place. I guess it would be more appropriate to say that some people are envyious of the traffic the large sites get, start something on their own, run it for a month, and then give up, frustrated, because people don't flock over to their site in droves. [Disclaimer: Of course, I'm not saying that everyone who starts a new site is that way, but I've seen the pattern many times, both with ANN and other sites I used to run...]

Some of this train of thinking was sparked by my adding "This news courtesy of storeshop.com" to some newsposts.
Part of the original plan was to support ann.lu, even though the site,
(created and operated using amiga) is not amiga related.
There might have been enough orders from this to cover cost, but it was
obviously a decision made with the heart rather than the head.
Disasterously, we were defrauded by http://www.supercgis.com and were faced with very heavy consequencial costs.
This has, for now, destroyed the ability to do sponsorship.
You can gawk at the xxxx at http://www.supercgis.com/gwhassan and look at his many flash cars, amazing home, boat and bulldozer and see his racism and bear hating.
If Christian has to close Ann.lu, Greg Hassan is the guy ultimatly
responsible.
He preys on those who have the simple desire to make a living and serve
others via fraud and blackmail as they become more desparate at his hands.
BTW, Thank you everyone who came over to look at storeshop.com, if we were selling amiga related items there, I'm sure there would have been sales.
If there had been sales, enough to see that a banner would have broken even, a banner there would have been.
What people have to do is, when you see a mention on ann.lu, especially if you plan to buy, clickthrough from ann.lu.
The recipients server logs then shows that the lead came from ann.lu, if the log shows the visitor then bought, that makes a strong case to advertise on ann.lu

Couldn't agree more, ann's looking more and more like an advertising free-4-all.

Advertisers on All.lu do not ask for the order, make an offer or even
say "click here for more information"
If they asked for a response, they would get a greater response.

Christian,
The point to me is that your site IS so popular that other people try to use it to advertise theirs !
Congratulations on running the premier site !
