I can not beleive how much posts I had to delete these last days. This site is not a message board. There are some amiga sites/mailing lists for that. Anyone that will not comply with posts guidelines will have his post deleted. I may also give up and let the site become a big mess with insults, message board, ads, whatever. I understand better Christian frustrations and would certainly have given up a long time ago if I was him. If you really want to help just post real news, just find some that can bring interest for the other ann users. I understand that being an Amigan can be frustrating but it is also true for us.

Although, it does seem to make a popular message board. Perhaps it's a feature that can be implemented? Like is done at Amiga.org?
It pulls in the punters.

then i suggesest the "Please post news, rumours and announcements at the Add News Item page."
line/link should be replaced with "Please post news at the Add News Item page."

Why should it be changed? If people would just stick to posting news, rumours and announcements there would be no problem.

Are you able to turn off unmoderated by default for a while, until ppl
get used to this a news site again?

In reply to Comment 3 (Troels Ersking):
because most rumours and non-news related stuff i've seen posted here gets deleted or commented with
'go away, this isnt news' , so only news should be allowed posted.

Or why don't you promote all "real news items" to news, files, web or rant status so that those who might actually be interested in less relevant postings can switch unmoderated posts on? If I want a serious Amiga news site I visit Amiga.org ..

Hello Christophe,
I am going to have to disagree with you (on one or two point, anyway):
>I can not beleive how much posts I had to delete these last days. This site is
>not a message board.
On the main page title it says "Daily Amiga news, rumours and comments". I don't think discussion should stopped because this kind of free discussion - although it often gets heated ;) - is what has made ANN so great. I am sure that people on all sides of the debate agree that it is good to have a neutral place to speak opinions :)
>I may also give up and let the site become a big mess with insults, message
>board, ads, whatever.
I agree that the mindless insults and the adverts are very irritating though, please don't give up on this.
>you really want to help just post real news, just find some that can bring
>interest for the other ann users. I understand that being an Amigan can be
>frustrating but it is also true for us.
I think it is good to post opinions or comments. As long as other ANN users find something of value, or if it provokes a thoughtful debate... the endless adverts though, really grate me.
People often express concern about the heated debates, but I think it is good to debate in an adult way - as they say on the radio advert for the London Times - your opinions are there to be tested and challenged! And if they survive the challenge then your opinions are all the more stronger!
This is why I think ANN is so good - because it's all about opinions and challenging and debating others' opinions. Okay, so it gets heated sometimes, but that's ok - it shows there is passion and commitment behind these opinions and that's why AMIGA will go on - because many of us still believe, even if our beliefs are slightly different ;)
Anyway, keep up the good work Christophe, you are appreciated by many of us :)

It is up to Christian to decide to have registered user or not.
Looking at what is done on Amigart.com (which I like) I see that registered users only does not provide too much comments.

I agree partly but then I'am confronted to many problems:
If you noticed a lot of people are irritated by these posts.
Even if some are interesting the posting useless posts tell me why did you delete mine and not this one.
Then If Christian does not want a message board that will be the flamewar place I just have to prevent any move into that direction.
So I have to do the police and I don't like that because it always bother someone.

I would like to thank those who are making constructive comments here.
ANN won't change until Christian is willing to do it.
I'am just the guy that keep an eye on ANN to prevent any abuse.
I wish we had more news to publish and more time to investigate on the information.
I make my possible to be objective and avoid any censorship. I think that if you appreciate ANN this is because it is more open than a site with registration and less messy than newsgroups/ Mailing lists/ message board.
We will try to keep this balance.

Christophe I think you are a great guy and usually a good moderator. However I
think you have over moderated in the last few weeks. Yes this is a 'news' site,
and yes there has been alot of CRAP posted lately. However I have seen you remove
a few decent items. Not an insult, just constructive input.

I have always thought of it like /. (Which itself is going downhill at the moment).
Valid postings should be along the lines of:
Pure "new" news - new Amiga stuff or things mentioning Amiga.
Rumours - credible ones such as "Trillian" to be in OS4.
Comments - Why isnt there an IM client in OS4.
Questions - kept current there is no reason why not, such as "How do I upgrade my AmigaOne"? ;)
Maybe there should be more "tick-boxes" at the top and have the ability to post under a specific one, e.g. post an unmoderated rumour? Which could then go to the moderated rumour section?
Cheers
Ben

Why dont you also have a sister site for non news items - maybe ann.lu/NOTnews - so that ppl can use that as a msg board where msg get deleted after a lifespan of 1 week just to see how messy it gets (hopefully ppl will see the advantage of posting just news or relevant info) !

There have to be limits. For instance Gary Peake set up a low volume news
and discussion feed which was valuable, but it descended int a free for
all, and the noise to signal ratio became impossible.
I think people come here to get more signal then they would on
comp.sys.amiga.misc
There are however some issues of high importance, and it is a judgement call.
I reckoned the amigaone being a second class computer
to standard issue macs because of the unupgradable G3 just such an issue.
Maybe I should have made the item news by headlining "amigaone to be second
class computer" however that does not look good to outsiders!

Some news is news that some would like to keep quiet.
Therefore an anonymous posting option is important.

In reply to Comment 15 (Mr Clit):
I think a consistent "user name" or "nick" is sufficient enough to reduce the static. Have a look at the comments, the most insulting / meaningless / crap ones are made by people like "anon", "anonymous" etc.
Now they could just as well call themselves "anon" as user name, but then at least you could be sure that it's the same "anon" as last week. (And it makes it easier to set up a kill file or something like that if you want to "cut the crap"... ;-)

You are indiscussable, because you don't follow your own rules and the
guidelines of this board.
"Using Abusive language and swear words, or insulting other persons is not
tolerated..."
>
>if you guys just made it so people would need to register with theyre real

Yeah, right!
At least you would be one of the first.
Strange it's _you_ who demands such rules...
Besides, you are very wrong if you think some registration would block "99%
of the shit".

Please do keep ANN as an open forum for the diverse views we have here in the community. The range of views is because the Amiga community *is* a diverse bunch with a wide range of views and opinions on 'the way things are' and 'the way things should be'. Pretending we're all in agreement does people a disservice. The secret is to allow debate, often heated debate, while making sure it remains relevant and to-the-point.
I agree we need to cut the ads, and cut out abusive stuff (insults, attacks etc - posts with 'f' words, 's' words, personal attacks etc) but not the posts that are controversial, to-the-point, even pointed. These posts do often represent a valid opinion within the community and deserve to be aired. These include the 'anti-AInc' types of posts. I think many agree with them. And I hope, those that don't, will respect their right to disagree, hold a different view, and to air it.
I disagree with much that is posted here, but would never advocate censorship. I feel the moderators here are doing a good job of moderating , without censoring, and this should continue.
Keep up the good work, guys.
