Suite101: What's The Intent? : Comment 1 of 8 | ANN.lu |
Posted by 3seas on 08-Mar-2002 06:40 GMT | As Tao is the source of intent, Amiga is a third party developer.
Amiga is not the only third party developer.
As Amiga is supposedly building a more consumer oriented UI, so may other third party development teams.
This does not insure that whatever work some third party developer(s) do with intent wil be usable thru AmigaDE.
If another company or group or even individual comes out with a great consumer oriented UI for intent, it may not
be compatable or even desireable to mix it with AmigaDE UI.
There is nothing that states that any development upon intent must be compatable with AmigaDE.
On the other hand, intent is proprietary work in competition with open source.
The relationship between Tao and Amiga is clear. There need be no friction unless Amiga insist on being the exclusive
UI developer for intent. Of course any third party developer considering creating a UI for intent needs to consider how
accessible Tao intent is going to be available to the consumer. If Tao controls the availability of intent with high cost
and even exclusive dog chain licenses, then what consumers are going to want it?
So far it seems the consumer has been able to use Linux where ever intent is on consumer appliances. |

Posted by intention on 08-Mar-2002 07:35 GMT | Now you just need to define "UI for Intent".
I mean, an UI is far below the scope of an OS (extension)... |

Posted by Budda on 08-Mar-2002 08:26 GMT | So if somebody created a compatible intuition.library/gadtools.library/mui collection for Intent we could work towards making our own UI for Intent and leave the slackers at A.I. to do whatever they do all day. |

Posted by Anonymous on 08-Mar-2002 11:52 GMT | I really dont care what he says he knows about the Amiga. He lied about the Toaster 2.0 for nt. You cant trust a lier. I did email him on that and he couldnt say anything about it ,becasue he knew me and many others are right . This leaves his editorals about the Amiga and or computer products not worth posting much less reading. This "story" however, was much less on target. |

Posted by John Chandler on 09-Mar-2002 19:34 GMT | In reply to Comment 4 (Anonymous): Hi Anonymous
I don't recall lying about a Toaster 2.0 for NT, to be honest (from admittedly hazy memory) I don't remember discussing Toaster for NT in past articles, at least not in detail as it would lie outside the scope of an Amiga topic.
As for e-mailing me, again I don't recall having a discussion on the subject though I've received lots of e-mails over the years in response to articles so it's possible we have - difficult to say without knowing who you are. But if so, I would've provided any information I have available.
I attempt to report information as accurately as possible and whenever I receive corrections I attempt to update articles to reflect this. Lying serves no real purpose, especially in the context of articles which appear (from feedback) to have a strong readership outside the Amiga community.
I'm sorry you feel the way you do about the articles, though I do agree the latest article isn't terribly exciting for ANN but thanks anyway to Teemu for the support, much appreciated :-)
