As some may have noticed, I promised to mail Metrowerks for a clarification on their Codewarrior Development Tools for Intent. Thomas Loupe, marketing manager for the product, was kind enough to respond, and while my licensing question is still open, it's worth a 'Read More.' Yes, I know I need to do something about my email address..

Subject: FW: Intent SDK question?

Mr. Kanowitz,

I am happy to help shed some light on this for the Amiga community. The tools we have just released are targeted for device manufacturing engineering teams architecting entire embedded product designs. Basically to take a project from concept, to pre-platform development (before the device is designed) on through post platform design, on through to the launch of the product. This is not for application developers. It is for this developers that need to get deep and detailed view into the hardware.

Early next week, my colleagues will be in London for a trade show. We are meeting with Senior members of Amiga to investigate supplying a tool for Amiga developers such as yourself. I can not provide more information than that at this time as it is simply not available. Rest assured, we are aware this is a thriving and active 3rd party community out there and we are eager to support your endeavors.

Please let me know if you have any follow up questions.

That's good news. Would be nice to see a bulky development kit like Visual Basic and Visual C

codewarrior is a real crossplatform development tool that lots and lots of developers actually use.
let's hope amino pple (esp fleecy cto moss) treat this company with a little bit of humility and less arrogance.

To wrap everything up, I just received the following addendum from Mr. Loupe:
--
To address your questions as to Tao licensing and CodeWarrior.
The CodeWarrior for intent product line does include the Tao JTE, Java Technology Edition. This is distributed with the CodeWarrior tools for development purposes only. Once the developer has created his application they will need to talk with Tao Group directly with respect to licensing for distribution.

Did somebody dare you to use that e-mail address, or something? ;-) Whew.
I imagine especially if Metrowerks is looking real long-term, courting Amiga developers makes sense. Metrowerks is owned by Motorola, last I heard.

The Metrowerks Codewarrior is very fine cross-platform developing system. I once used it to make a little application for the MacOS. And thanks to Codewarrior, I could do it in a rather short time. Lit's hope, they make a developer version for Intent, and down the line AmigaDE and AmigaOS.

Unusually friendly phrasing, coming from a big company from outside our little world.
If nothing else, their PR policy is wise - never anger a possible customer...
Would be nice to have something like this for AA. Let's hope AInc strikes a deal!

Actually, I really like the StormC 3.0 that comes on the OS3.5 SDK 2.1 CDROM.
I am happy to see CodeWarrior come over to the Amiga.
(and I would love to see a lot of other companies come on over too...)

In reply to Comment 7 (SlimJim):
Well, you have to remember that Metrowerks CodeWarrior comes from MacIntosh. They then branched into non-C languages, then platform independant Java, then Palm Java...
