Matrox Parhelia launched in Japan : Comment 10 of 39 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Graham on 14-May-2002 12:26 GMT | There is stuff on Matrox's website now as well.
It is all the same stuff though in the end, same old pictures, etc, on every site.
It looks nice though, can't wait to see reviews of this monster though, when it becomes available. So far it is just an announcement. Should be here within a couple of months though. |

Matrox Parhelia launched in Japan : Comment 13 of 39 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Ole-Egil Hvitmyren on 14-May-2002 12:39 GMT | In reply to Comment 12 (Marcus Sundman): Hmm, that's not a problem with motherboards that have space between the AGP and PCI (A1G3-SE immediately springs to mind), but for small motherboards with no room at all, that'll render 2 out of 3 or 4 slots unusable... I guess that's the price you pay for monster graphics. Now if they could mount the chip on the other side of the board, with the sink and fan pointing UPWARDS instead of frigging downwards, this could actually work. |
|
Matrox Parhelia launched in Japan : Comment 14 of 39 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Graham on 14-May-2002 13:11 GMT | In reply to Comment 12 (Marcus Sundman): Apparently it isn't the final heatsink for the product, but it looks likely that any slot next to the AGP port will be blocked regardless of the final heatsink used, at least until they shrink the die down to a smaller process than 0.15um - say 0.13um should provide a benefit later this year (when TSMC get their 0.13um process in order).
As the AGP port is generally always the top port, why not put the GPU on the other side with its cooling solution? That wouldn't block any ports, and the heatsink would be resting on the card in a tower configuration, not hanging from it... |

Posted by Radfoo on 14-May-2002 13:17 GMT | Other then the requirment for drivers to be written will this work in Eyetech's AmigaOne AGP slot? |

Posted by Darrin on 14-May-2002 13:59 GMT | In reply to Comment 15 (Radfoo): Lifted from the COMPLIANCE section:
"AGP 8x, 4x, 2x and 1x "
So I guess that means it will work in any AGP slot. |

Matrox Parhelia launched in Japan : Comment 18 of 39 | ANN.lu |
Posted by [JC] on 14-May-2002 15:23 GMT | That looks like a Socket A heatsink on there. Even in a PC, thatd waste a few slots, so I imagine they'll be reducing the size of the heatsink.
I've always wondered why on earth they don't put the GPU and therefore the heatsink on the other side of the card. It makes a hell of a lot more sense given that heat rises.
AGP 8X support is interesting. There's currently only one chipset that supports it, and that's VIA's KT333A (I'm not even sure if thats been released yet).
Thing is, looking at the specs, this is gonna be one hell of an expensive card. Certainly not a card for every day users who don't require much 3D power. Matrox are gonna also have a tough time convincing people they're on par with nVidia and ATi, they've been silent too long. |

Matrox Parhelia launched in Japan : Comment 19 of 39 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Anonymous on 14-May-2002 15:42 GMT | In reply to Comment 18 ([JC]): It costs 400 USD.
There will be cheaper version.
And no, Matrox won't have a hard time convincing people their card is faster.
That's what you have benchmarks for.
Just take a look at the specs.
If you know anything about 3D graphics, you'll be blown away. |

Partly because many motherboards have DIMM slots, a CPU slot/socket and/or other components there because graphics cards always have the large components on the other side. :-/ |

The majority of people don't go for specs first, they go for brand name recognition. People know nVidiahigh performance, so they'll pick them solely on that basis. Matrox are mainly known for thier high quality 2D displays and DualHead, not 3D power. |

Posted by Anonymous on 14-May-2002 17:05 GMT | In reply to Comment 21 ([JC]): I'll go for crystal clear display over fuzzy image anyday!! I remember upgrading (???) my lil ol G200 for an Annhilator Pro and I was that disgusted with the crappy image quality I went back to my G200.
Pin sharp display wins EVERYTIME !! (Unless your half blind anyway) |

Posted by Alkemyst on 14-May-2002 20:00 GMT | In reply to Comment 22 (Anonymous): damn right, qualty matters to me & even if nvidia or ATI come out qwith faster 3d cards
i would still get a matrox if the image quality is better as even this new Matrox will play games at 60fps+
& anything over 120fps is pure waste & would rather have better image quality than having a gfx card with crap image but can push 180fps |

Matrox Parhelia launched in Japan : Comment 27 of 39 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Joe "Floid" Kanowitz on 14-May-2002 20:47 GMT | Woot! Looks like I was a bit wrong on the use of the term 'IMAX.' No shuttergoggles, just wide-angle goodness (now where're those OEL/OLED displays that're supposed to make this affordable for the proletariat!? ;))...
There are low-profile Socket A coolers around, so even if it needs something that big, and no component-side tricks are pulled, hope is not lost.
I do hope they fix the errant pixel problem seen in some of the antialiased shots. |

Matrox Parhelia launched in Japan : Comment 28 of 39 | ANN.lu |
Posted by dakang on 15-May-2002 05:20 GMT | In reply to Comment 18 ([JC]): KT333 mobos have been out for a few weeks now. There about 8 of them.
I've never heard of a Socket A heatsink wasting a few PCI slots - I have 6 PCI slots and a big fat Zalman silent cooler - no problems whatsoever...
The biggest issue (as Ben Hermans also said) is that without a GFX API that can tap into the new power (i.e. Warp V5) the extra features and speed are pretty redundant.
So, who knows more about Warp V5, specs, release and how does it differ from OpenGL v2? |

Posted by priest on 15-May-2002 11:57 GMT | In reply to Comment 31 (dakang): The heatsink in the production version will be smaller !! (like in all other GFX cards)
And I agree with the info at anandtech site that Matrox is on their way to 0.13 micron technology, especially if they intend to stay competitive (it also delivers more performance & enables 16x16x16 bit colors....). 0.13 micron technology is just not mature enough, but perhaps later this year... |

Posted by Navvie on 15-May-2002 15:25 GMT | In reply to Comment 19 (Anonymous): Matrox have so much vapor... Glide wrappers for the G400 anyone?
They'll have a hard time convincing people to buy their card IMO, nvidia and Ati are the market leaders, with so many OEM deals between them its hard to see that there's room for Matrox.
IMO, they should have stuck to selling G400's to businesses for $50 a pop.
Carpe Diem,

Posted by Joe "Floid" Kanowitz on 15-May-2002 20:56 GMT | Re: Poor drivers... compare a Matrox card under XFree86 with anyone else's. Openness is a virtue when you can find third parties interested in writing code. (As is the case with X and OS4/Warp3D, and as wasn't the case for certain APIs on Windows...)
For anyone still curious about potential heatsink designs... http://www.anandtech.com/cooling/showdoc.html?i=1571 has a roundup. |
