Another article from John Chandler.

The article

A well-intentioned article but there really isn't much to write an Amiga book about at the moment, it seems to me. If and when the Amiga SDK matures, it'd be appropriate to write a book about using it to create those AmigaAnywhere applications. (Though keep in mind this is "Amiga" in name only, as far as relevance to the original computer or its descendants is concerned.) Maybe AmigaOS5 will be something worth writing a book about if and when it comes to pass. (Well, if it's not worth a book, then it's hardly worth doing at all, right?) But I don't think there's much of a book in AmigaOS4, so it'll probably be a while before John sees the new books he wants on shelves or at Amazon.

Writing a new book for AmigaOS4 would be a very good idea. There is alot new in this new version. Also there hasn't been written a good book about the smaller changes made to AmigaOS 3.5/3.9, so there would be alot to write about to the interest of most users of AmigaOS.
Also the AmigaDE looks very promising, I look forward to see how Ami2D/Ami3D could be integrated in AmigaOS4.x/5.x

Before wishing for Ami2D, read this interview.
http://www.getboinged.org/roundup.asp?A=118
Ami2D isn't anything ambitious like MUI.
What is needed is to either make MUI official, or make a feature list
of MUI and add those features (screens manager etc) to the dreaded
Reaction.
And of course redraw all Reaction's gadgets so they are less ugly.

On reading the article, I don't see any problem with what was written. After all, it's an editorial (meaning opinion), not an article.

Nothing to write an Amiga book about??!!
For starters, there needs to be a new set of RKMs; the new features of 2.1, 3.0, 3.1, 3.5, 3.9, and 4.0 have not been covered. Especially useful would be better ReAction and Warp3D documention.

The "new features" of a now-obscure decade-old operating system aren't something many people would care to buy a book about, unless they're into retro-computing. What do you think when you see a MacOS 7 or Win95 book on the shelves? Bad inventory management at the bookstore. The new features of 4.0 aren't public yet, so no book there. When they are, a publisher can decide if the potential market is big enough to go to the trouble. Same for ReAction and Warp3D. Probably good web documentation would be enough to meet people's needs.

Oh, yeah, as for the RKMs, I think I'd wait to see if AmigaOS 5 happens. Unless the OS actually breaks new ground, I don't think it'll be around very long anyway. The port to PPC is great, of course, but it's just catch-up, and barely that. But the OS itself is basically just a port with some modernizations. If it can actually introduce something new to desktop computing, not just for Amiga users but concepts and features that'd be interesting to computer users in general, in a follow-up version, maybe there'll be a book in that, but I'm not holding my breath.

In reply to Comment 11 (gary_c):
Since the Amiga hasn't left much of an impact on other systems, the AmigaOS is still a novelty in itself. The AmigaDOS is still much nicer than most any other system, the file structure is still so much better than anything else. These are things introduced at an early stage in AmigaOS, but which other systems haven't been able to introduce due to being older and backwards compatibility minded. Do keep in mind that AmigaOS, first released in 1985, is much younger than e.g. Windows or Linux (UNIX).

In reply to Comment 10 (gary_c):
Operating systems usually don't change so much from revision to revision that old documentation is useless. Quite the opposite.
However, most Amiga books are from the 1.3 era. I'm lucky enough to own the complete OS3.0 documentation from Commodore, but those glued pamphlets are hardly deserving of the »book» description. I also have Mastering AmigaDOS 3 from Bruce Smith books, and that one is very helpful to me. The same goes for my ARexx book.
