At GFX-BASE you can read a Q&A session with Darius Brewka. He is the author of AmiStart, a startmenu-launchbar bursting with features. The new version, which he is developing at the moment really kicks ass - and you get this great software for free! We thought you should know what you can expect to download on Aminet soon. Here's our Q&A session with Darius including lots of infos and details aswell as exclusive screenshots! An english and (original)german version is online! We also have a new vote running in which we ask you if you think that AmigaOS should be available for the Pegasos.

Very nice looking start bar! Much neater than that green and blue blobby thing at the bottom of WinXP.
This is the only start bar I've seen that I would consider using on my Amiga.

Wow! Very nice from the screenshots.
This is the type of thing that would make a great candidate for the official release.

Nice visual design on the bar itself, and the layout reminds me a *lot* of the OS/2 Warpcenter with some of the extensions it could've used. Obviously, a clock for the 'Start' button isn't very communicative, but I assume that's just to show off.
So.. not bad, but I'm definitely biased coming from OS/2. ;) AmiDock has a better chance for consistency- in this case, being consistently modifiable- but that's also its downfall at the moment, there being no way to differentiate a docky from a more 'static' icon other than the icon itself. (Windowmaker, and presumably NeXT before it, patched around this by placing a '...' on an unopened static element; it took me two weeks to figure out what the dots meant, without the benefit of documentation.)

Simply the best startmenu program for Amiga :)

Yeah, but do something better and cooler and they'll copy you, make the profit, and eveybody will be thinking it's the last scream in OS graphics. WinXP is puter competition/imitation with OSX.

In reply to Comment 6 (José):
One thing I hope the designers of the next generation of the GUI keep in mind is that emulating standard features found elsewhere is important - even at the expense of some creative engineering. You may loathe Windows, the MacOS, KDE/Gnome whatever, but if you don't have parity people will find the environment totally foreign. This was always one of the biggest problems with the Amiga - the lack of a standard look and feel. As it stands, the current GUI is sorely dated.
With a configurable/skinnable interface it would be possible to appeal to any taste. That should also include default settings that 'borrow' themes from the big players.

It's a good thing the fella who invented the auto didn't think that
way. Otherwise we'd be steering with two leather straps and walking
around bow-legged everywhere we go.
I understand your point about keeping a standard look and feel where
possible, but in some areas, if there's a better way to do it, I say
go for it and to hell with what Microsoft calls "standard". Windows
still feels as clumsy now as it did ten years ago, and it always will
as long as we continue to follow in the footsteps of a company whose
greatest operating system advancement is in getting their Windows line
to finally stop crashing every ten minutes.

Maybe I misread the original message, but who's advocating that Windows serve as the model?
The point is that consistency is critical.

I couldn't disagree more. The current AmigaOS model is fine -- you
can open windows, you can close them and you can move them around;
you can launch programs and you can quit them. What else is there
to do?
Skinnable GUIs are a waste of time. They may look nice but
they're hardly crucial to the operation of the computer.
Clearly though, pretty window borders and what-not are important
to some people... which is fine, whatever turns you on. As far as
I'm concerned however such pedantry is counter-productive -- I
want to achieve something with my computer and I don't want to be
concerned with whether my window borders are l33t enough or if my
icons are perfectly aligned.
So long as I can remove all this cruft from OS4, I'll be happy.
